lack of social stuff in Lamia..Follow

#1 Sep 14 2013 at 2:57 PM Rating: Good
anyone else feel that there is no social aspect to this game? i know MMOs are a pain to actually be social in, most of the time you just have to solo unless your friends are playing with you but jeez!
like today some guy ask a question in shout, all fine. i PM back to see if someone already answered and not a single word back. this isn't the first time. the one lvl 15 quest where you HAVE TO be in a party, i was sitting outside the entrance, few people there so i figured try and talk to them. said hi, how's it going, yada yada. nothing.. again.. anyone else run into this?

aside from Fates, dungeons, FC's, linkshells...endgame too.

pretty much everything aside from being emo and soloing with chat off.

its not so much being emo or choosing to solo more so being forced to. like i said i know MMOs have a lack of social stuff, i'm played a few myself. but this game's lack of it seems to be the worst i've ever seen.

Most chat I see is RMT spam and trolling/arguing. Plus 'LFP/LFM FATE' of course. The occasional FC recruitment spam. And questions on how to do or where to find something. I really don't know anyone on my server still, but I haven't gone out of my way to do so either.

Folks in my FC on Lamia won't shut up. However, that group is an exception since it's a bunch of friends in RL who already knew each other.

Most of the social chatter is meant to occur in FCs or linkshells, however. XI was much the same way. Most of my fondest memories in XI occurred because of crazy conversations inside a linkshell.

Not on Lamia, but I've met some cool people in parties and love my FC chat. In my experience, you make good friends through party play and there are plenty of opportunities for that in this game. That's actually what urged me to go to Ultros. Also, I tend to keep /sh turned off for the exact reasons you mention. Just be open in party play. Good people tend to find other good people.

Naw I've had no problems socializing. In fact people are getting a little too social if you ask me. People were spouting off in the shout chat like it was a f2p game or world of Warcraft. You always hope the next mmo is going to have a more mature playerbase and it never does

This is the first game I have played that is cross platform. I am a pc gamer for all MMO's I have played. I wonder, is it normal that chat is less social due to the console not being as conducive to typing chat? I know some people have a keyboard but I am guessing many don't?

Fates are solo..and if you are in a pt it's still solo no one really talks

Dungeons are manly done with people from different servers so most don't care do get to know or socialize with people they won't see again or group up with again

Fc some are active others are just loaded with people in them that are silent and filling space

Do people use linkshells?

End game you got me there not there yet but I assume it's a lot like dungeons

You could...I don't know....be the one who talks? Most times, I find that parties are mostly sociable if someone initiates conversation. My linkshell is always talking. My FC is pretty much silent because...we're all in the same linkshell. I guess my point is, be the person who talks if you're upset nobody talks in your parties.

I think that there are two social aspects to MMOGs, and that we need to stop conflating the two. There's social chat, and there is social gameplay.

FFXIV has social chat -- I'm pretty sure every MMOG has this -- but nearly no social gameplay. FATEs are joined automatically, dungeons are joined automatically, and the rest of the game is solo-oriented. So much is done for the player that, once a few people get together, the gameplay is still plays like a solo experience, it's just that a handful of others are doing their version at the same time; by the time the people have been teleported together, little remains but to plow forward, silently doing your job. There's a clear goal and a time limit for what you need to do, with little reason to "shoot the sh*t," as they say. Everybody's there for a finite reason, and the pace is fast enough to prevent many attempts. And afterwards you'll never see one another again, anyway, so what's it matter?

Then there are FATEs: to these I'll simply say that something does not become a social experience simply because a mass of strangers are all clamouring toward the same target, otherwise traffic jams would fit this description perfectly.

In sum, chat is different than gameplay. In FFXIV the two rarely intersect. This is what contributes to the overall lack of social feeling, not the fact that someone "hasn't found a linkshell yet."

What?
Do you mean there is cross server dungeon events between players (for example the Sastasha dungeon)?
Are you sure?

Duty finder groups people from all servers to run events on a server that only is available for instances

Unless you are pulling my leg and already knew that

I seriously did not know this.

I thought DF was for their own servers.

Pretty good configuration by SE then.

It has its pros and cons
It's convenient but it is too much like a off line game well a lot like elder scrolls

It's in more situations than just parties though. Go outside a dungeon, count heads and then ask if anyone is interested in a group. The majority of the time it's the minority of those around you who will even take the time to respond, if at all. I sent a PM to someone who was asking for a tank for a dungeon and got no response despite me being the proper job to cover the role. Few minutes later they posted the same shout so it's not like they didn't respond because they filled the spot. It's not like tanks have a hard time with DF queues, but I was looking to group with people from my server specifically. No dice Smiley: frown

I understand where you're coming. And believe me - it's not exclusive to FFXIV, or even your server. You'll find this in a lot of other ones too. It's made me a bit timid and afraid to talk to people. All I can tell you is to don't let it get you down. I don't know why most people now are so prone to ignore, or have this selective reading thing going on.

As for "why don't you be the one that talks". Yeah that works, but not very well. People can be either short with you or still flat out ignore you. It doesn't feel good at all to be ignored, and is why it is one of things I don't do unless we're enemies.

I roll solo in my game, only pairing up with those through DF. But always hoping to spark something special with someone, anyone. Life is a real drag without any social connection.
