Need Some Help... PS3 Keyboard QuestionsFollow

Hello all,

I just started playing FFXIV on the PS3 last night. I figured I'd use a keyboard since it would probably be easier. However, the PS3 help boxes aren't exactly forthcoming with how to do things on the keyboard... all it gives you are the controller inputs. I've managed to figure out most things I need, but there are two things I'm having trouble with that I need help on:

1) I don't know how to access my abilities on the crossbar (or if I even can). What keys do I use to do this? Or is there some type of option I need to select/deselect in the settings screens? So far the only way I've figured out to use an ability in battle is to open up the menu, and that seems like I pain. There must be an easier way... hotkeys?

2) How can I scroll around the /map with the keyboard? I haven't figured that out yet either.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

1) P is what I think you want.

2) When you find out, let me know. I don't think you can. use controller, I use mouse.

I know about the P button... it brings up the menu. That's what I've been using. I was hoping for some way to use hot keys or something so I could actually see what's going on in battle.

I imagine it would be the same way players on the computer do it?

PC players have the option to change between 'keyboard/mouse' and 'controller' settings. I haven't played on PS3 so I'm not certain if it's there or where it is, but that is probably what you're looking for. The UI should change between the controller's diamond shape(to match the button placement on controller) and the normal 1 through 0 horizontal bar style.

I normally use the mouse to move the map, but I would imagine that page up and page down keys work if the map is highlighted.

If this is what he is asking, then it is found in the Character Config menu. On PC, it looks like an On/Off switch and is the 1st 2 options in the left side menu: Game Pad mode (controller) and Mouse mode (WASD, Action Bars, etc)
PC (or KB&Mouse players, I assume PS3 players could play with KB&M) can see more Action bars.

PC players Access the spell book by hitting P and dragging w/e they want down to an action bar. Here is a PC KB&M vs a Game Pad (controller)

Screenshot

Notice the 4 action bars in the 1st pic (3 in the middle, one to the right) and the Menu buttons (bottom right in 1st pic). All that is gone in Controller mode. I assume hitting O or Start is how the menu(s) are accessed in controller mode (like all other FF games).

This is what was looking for... I'll have to look through the config screens when I log on later tonight.

This is really frustrating me... I'd really like my to screen to look like your first picture, but it doesn't seem to be possible. That controller/mouse switch isn't even there in the PS3 menus. AFAIK, I'm stuck with the crossbars. The problem is that none of the keys needed to access the crossbar (L2, R2, the d-pad, etc) aren't given corresponding keys on the keyboard! I don't know why they didn't just leave the option to play the same way as the PC players do...

There *is* a "keybind" menu that lets you make a key the equivalent of a controller button (in other words, "let the 1 key = L2 button", for example), BUT each key can only have one assignment, so if it's already assigned to a different task it will override it's original task. So in order to get this work, I'd have to find at least 11 keys on the keyboard that doesn't already have a task assigned to it (4 d-pad buttons, the 4 shape buttons, L2, R2, and select)... what a pain, and that's assuming I could remember what keys I assigned in the first place.

I guess I have two options:
1) Play using a controller with a keyboard in my lap for chatting and whatnot. Hopefully this doesn't impact my ability to properly communicate, target, etc.

2) Completely remap my keyboard assignments to come up with something that makes sense to me without leaving off any crucial key assignments I might need at some point.

I don't know... any suggestions? Neither choice really seems all that optimal to me but I guess I've got to use one. If there are any PS3 players out there using a keyboard I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

Wait, let me get this straight... you're saying that when you try to make keybinds it only allows you to bind keys on the keyboard up to the maximum amount of buttons on the controller?

Link related.

*EDIT*

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you turn off the controller? >.>

No, what I'm trying to say is more like this. Let's say I decide to keybind, I dunno, the H key as the equivalent of the L2 button on the controller. This will override whatever function the H key originally had (opening up the Hunting Log, in this instance). Since there are 14 buttons on a PS3 controller, if I want to avoid this issue I'd have to figure out 14 keys on the keyboard that don't already have a function assigned to them. Does that make sense? It would be somewhat workable if the controller buttons had equivalent keys already assigned (for example, the WASD keys serve the same function as the left analog stick on the controller), but it gets tricky because there are (AFAIK) no keys that have the same function as the L2/R2 buttons or the d-pad on the controller.

To answer your last question, evidently nothing since I have yet to actually turn the controller on while playing the game.

From what i understand there's no way to use the KB for movement on the PS3, only for typing, don't quote me on that tho.

You can definitely use it for moving around. WASD keys move, arrows keys control the camera, and the Numpad is used for menus. I think it's the same as on PC. I think the only difference is your stuck with the crossbar, which you can't easily use on the keyboard.
