it sure doesnt help that se has a ton of different sites you have to log on with the same password, increasing the chances of a trojan or virus.

Let's say that someone's account is stolen because they use the same password on some other website and that site got hacked and all the password stolen. That's a very common way for an account to be compromised. Let's say that they are not a security expert know-it-all. Let's say, for example, that they are someone who don't use computers all that much, and are as such not really aware that using the same password was a security risk.

That person, in your opinion, is stupid? Because you are insulting a lot of people. Just saying.

Ok, i will give it to those .05%ers. Look, i am not without understanding, but honestly, your going to be hard pressed to find anyone that fits into all of the criteria you mentioned. 99.9% of people on here or who play any MMO on even a semi-regular basis know the risk on the internet. I don't want to sit there and hold their hands, that doesn't teach them how to prevent the serious problem from happening again. If you think i am insulting alot of people, then i find it to be a good thing, atleast i've gotten their attention. If i have to play the 'bad guy' then so be it. but i refuse to have pity parties for those who 'should' know better. IF someone does fall into the criteria you've mentioned or say someone did take every precaution; chances password, makes it something not so obvious, doesn't use same password on other sites, avoids obvious dangerous sites, uses a security key fob, and still gets their account hacked.....then i apologize to you and yours.

I have less than 20 people on my blist right now because I keep shouts and yells filtered most of the time; I don't get that many tells. That might change when I get to level 50 (currently 42) and need something like Hydra, but for now, it's only the rare time when I want a FATE party that I ever need shouts turned on. It takes very little time to toggle the filters on and off as needed.

I've worked in IT long enough to know that "ignorant about technology" is by no means the same as "stupid about all things."

At my last job, one of our most horrible clients was a brilliant urologist. She was a highly rated surgeon and well respected in the medical community. She also had no concept of how the Internet worked and would constantly complain about how slow her X-Rays were loading (2 GB file coming from a remote office 50 miles away? It's going to take you a few minutes.) She would break her printers, break her applications on the laptop by clicking too fast, and in general cause headaches for everyone in our office.

Was she stupid? No. I used to say that all the medical school left no room in her brain for anything related to IT.

^^^^ This!

Unfortunately I have worked in IT long enough to know there's way too many insignificant little jerks who think their own knowledge of technology make them smarter than everyone else.

Is anyone else unable to add people to their Blacklist who are shouting?

I am able to blacklist people who send me a tell by using:

/blist add <r>

But for some reason I cannot type /blist add "Player Name", I get an error every time.

I have never been able to use /blist add "name"

Only way I am able to /blist anyone is to go into the Social button and add em under the /blist section.

There is a space after the name you have to delete if you right click the name.

I right click to get the option to "send tell" then delete the /tell "name" and replaced it with /blacklist add "name" - but I have to delete the space after the name first since it requires the quotation marks (but /tell does not.) Quite annoying.

Oh I'm on a PS3 so I don't really have this option.

You have to include the quotations around the name and you can't have a leading or trailing space in the name. It's HIGHLY annoying to have to type them in that way. Even more so when you have multiple people to blist.

On a lighter note have you ever seen a spammer standing there in town? It's kind of funny because their mouths move non-stop. They're so talkative!

Try select to move your focus to the chat log, scroll up with the d-pad to highlight their line of text, and hit X. See if it opens a mini menu with stuff like Send Tell, Invite to Party, & Add to Friends List.

I have done this, but there's no add to Black List option, and on PS3 you can't go left in the chat without hitting delete... so I can't just go back and type /blist add over /tell or whatever.

I will just go to the Black List section of the start menu to add from there and see if that works.

So a while back during the freeze on sales i went through a variety of "those" sites looking for a CD key so i could play, found one for $40 from a site that looked fairly legit. A while after paying with paypal (which i used because they have really good protection) i got an email asking for this information from me before i would get the key....... /facepalm

1. My name is ____.
2. I am ___ years old .
3. I live in ____ (country).
4. I live at _______ (address).
5. I work at _ _ _ _ _ _ (job)
6. ________ (payment email) is owned by me and I also confirm the legitimacy of this transaction.
To protect your account safety, we will keep all of the information here secretly, so you can feel free to fill in the information.

I thought to myself, wow they could hack all sorts of things with all of that information, steal the account back whenever etc.

I went onto chat because im stubborn as hell and wanted my key, i then argued with the support guy for 15 minutes about how they should just send the key or i would go through paypal to get my money back. The guy was rock solid on the fact they wanted all of my information, so i just said, WTH and lied on every single one of the questions, 3 minutes later i got a CD key in my email (which was actually a collectors edition key even though i only payed for a standard key)

1 day later i'm playing the collectors edition with the token installed on my phone ready to go.

tl;dr, lots of people who bought CD keys from unscrupulous sites most likely gave away a ton of personal information, which will then be used for their accounts to easily get hacked.

Getting your house robbed does not equal having bad security.

Getting your house robbed does not mean you had an idiot's garage sale.

You cannot assume all victims have done something stupid and risky. Some victims are legit players that just want their chars back afterwards.

Agree 100% with getting an authenticator: Do it now. Dont' delay, don't be lazy, just get it. It will save you.

I also don't fully understand why banning the shouters can't be done with lightning speed. It should be like this: Bot shouts a few times, GM is monitoring shout channels, 2 clicks, bot is jailed, evidence is reviewed, ban. I know its just a game and all, but what they are doing is legitimate theft, shouldn't be taken lightly.

The only downside is this seemingly long wait for an authenticater and lack of a smartphone for any app. *sigh*

But I would like to point out that most MMOs do not have such a device for security measures. What then? I sorta wish I had left my last statement unedited. But just keep in mind that as the years go by, hackers only get better at their job. So ways at keeping your computer and accounts secure becomes harder and harder by the second.

Hi. I hope you get your account compromised through no fault of your own. Then I can have a laugh and insult you.

Edited, Sep 16th 2013 1:03pm by PhoenixOmbre

Yeah well, good luck with that one... ^.^/

Why? Do you think it inconceivable that SE's security could be breached, bypassing even authenticators? Or are you simply under the delusion that you are somehow special and nothing could possibly happen to you?

Of course many cases of stolen accounts are the owner's fault. But do not assume that this is 100% of all cases. And don't assume that because you have some technical knowledge that everyone should automatically undertand things the way you do. w

Well, you are right that SE made a grave mistake. The mistake was to not make the token mandatory.
I`ve yet to see something that bypasses the physical authenticator, but I agree that if such a thing were
to exist, SE would have to come up with a solution. For now, however, the authenticator seems to provide
sufficient protection; and I strongly urge others to buy one asap.

Perhaps... no, quite definitely... my comments are unreasonably harsh. It is not resonable to expect 12 year
old kids to understand the necessity of "yet nother bothersome 10 seconds of password input" before they
can hack`n`slash for 12 hours straight. Even though they are expected to provide their credit card information,
agree to the ToS and consent to refrain from harrassment, sexism, racism and overly bad language.

- You see what I did there -

I also agree it`s bad business practice, because MMOs at least partially thrive on dumb kids with lots of money;
which you`ll inevitably lose following a ban. The question then is which of the following two things you value more:
a game environment where RMT and botting is swiftly and mercilessly dealt with, even if a few not-so-bright comrades
get their accounts deleted despite being innocent of the aforementioned crimes (but not of stupidity); or a game
environment where the second warning follows the first and paves the way for the third; which lowers the "costs"
for professional botters and RMTs to one third of the initial value.

I prefer the former. Even though I would be very, very upset if I got banned. Which, luckily, I am quite confident,
will never happen. If anything, I`ll get banned for my poisonous tongue.

It is possible to be hacked with a token, but it is much much more difficult and if you have a good antivirus program and practice safe surfing, the odds approach nil. (Not equal to nil, as nothing in this world is foolproof.)

The hack in XI was a virus that infected POL itself and allowed an RMT to remotely crash POL immediately after you entered your password and token, right when you clicked the "okay" button to log in. The one-time password itself is good for 27 minutes so long as it wasn't used. POL would then refuse to start again, giving Windows errors generated by the virus. In the meantime, the hacker could use that one time password, log into your account, and clean it out before you could do anything about it.

Since that particular injection virus requires tampering with an executable file, Windows Vista, 7, and 8 with UAC on would probably prevent it. Windows XP didn't have that, nor would Vista or 7 if someone had deliberately turned off UAC. (It's a lot harder to turn off in 8.) Also, a good antivirus could catch it. So these man-in-the-middle attacks were quite rare in XI. I've heard of only a handful of cases where it worked, and personally know only one player that had it happen. SE restored the account since the person did have a token. (They also reset your "one time" account restore any time you were hacked and then bought a token. So hack victims actually got 2 potential account restores.)

Perhaps the analogy was bad, but all I was trying to say with those statements was if you're not using all the available security means then that blame is at least partially on the user. Could it happen with all measures in place? Certainly, but the chances are definitely much smaller.

I wasn't trying to declare anyone stupid - people make mistakes or think things won't happen to them, or are just entirely misinformed on the subject. All things that do not equal a lack of intelligence. However, as often as the subject has been discussed it seems a lot, and by no means all, users fail to take any sort of responsibility in the events. Should all these precautions and measures need to be taken? No, it is definitely a bunch of low lives that participate in the behavior of account theft and the like. I think we can all agree on that, but it is a reality and the added security and resources on how to help prevent to be "hacked" are freely accessible. None of the measures are 100% fool proof that's for sure, I just think if you don't want to be compromised and not doing all you can to prevent it then it's an unfortunate consequence you will have to deal with when or if it does happen.

Those that have followed all recommendations and security measures to the letter and still have been compromised then my sincerest apologies go out to you.

The easiest way to combat it is to not only not purchase gil, but rally against those who do. Too many people are quick to turn a blind eye at the real issue, that's the people buying it, not the one's selling it. I've excluded people from my friend list and actually belonged to a guild in the past that has kicked a few members for purchasing currency. And they had the audacity to brag about it, because they are used to the norm of people not saying anything, or worse yet, holding their hand out. That is all. :)

Noticed the down-rate. Seems we have at least one gil purchaser in our midst. Now, just to find out who... :|
