I want to start by saying i am not defending the practice of gold farmers..
However, to the people you see in game, they are often solving the real world problem of their poverty and famine. The companies that profit from this whole debacle often employ younger kids that have nowhere else to go and give them food and housing in exchange for working 12+ hr shifts farming gold and power leveling. I can't really blame them for taking op the offer and they themselves are being taken advantage of.

Unfortunately, I think it's nearly impossible to stop the individuals who actually run these gaming sweatshops.

I don't know about the "kids with nowhere else to turn" angle (not saying that's not possible, of course), but I've seen a couple documentaries about people who RMT as summer jobs after high school, as well as articles about the leagues of Chinese prisoners forced by abusive prison guards to do the same.

It's something worth thinking about: by buying gil/gold/zenny/whatever you may not only be ruining an in-game economy, you may also be directly supporting corrupt officials' abuse of prisoners. Kind of like the Bodies exhibit, which buys the corpses of Chinese torture victims in order to pose them playing football for rich Americans (and gets in trouble for this year after year), one should always question where one's money goes, as well as the ethical and real-world implications of one's actions.

Yea, I saw a video about this very topic some years ago during my tour in FFXI. I agree that on one end RMT is pretty annoying, but in RL where there are kids working to just simply get a next meal is heartbreaking, and I would wager to say many people who were placed in their shoes would do the same. It's the individuals that capitalize and make profit off of this type of labor (and it's not all child labor either, some adults are working for these RMT masters) that have to be stopped. I would bet that The people that make it big off of this say to themselves that they are simply earning a wage, and that they don't see anything MORALLY wrong since they are not engaging in some deep stuff like sex trafficking (if they don't). They may even say they are doing "GOOD" since they are providing food/shelter. All in all, the people that make big profit are violating the ToS and RMT is not allowed and it should be stopped, and I pray all the people being exploited find rest and a means to make a living.

I believe the best way to end RMT is to do away with in game money systems, and instead do a simple trade and barter system. Say you go to an NPC to get something and instead of asking for gil/gold, they ask you for something you have already in your bag.. or read what crafts you have and ask you to make them something to trade for the item you desire.

Same for Auction House transactions. You place your items within you retainer and ask for an item(s) you are needing.

So basically, you're in favor of throwing the baby out with the bathwater? O.o

Some item will become currency instead of gold/gil/whatever, and the RMT would just sell that item. Like Stones of Jordan early in Diablo 2, and then high end runes later on.

They have gotten this solution partially right.

I like the mythology and philosophy methods of obtaining high-end gear.

As an addition to the above exploit of using the inn to not get blacklisted - I found a bot yesterday that was position hacking whilst spamming - same result I could not blacklist.
I did report them and luckily they weren't there today.
So it seems SE is paying some attention to this.
I also found about a third of my blacklist had been deleted.
However, I was very sad to see a real chr who had a FC etc had been turned into a bot!
Please be careful and don't even attempt to look at their sites.
