I know the app is straight legit and all but how does it look from SE's end? Is it totally legit to use and I won't suffer a ban for it? I know SE frowned upon the Windower in XI and you could be banned if they every found out you used it, and I did indeed use it without issue but I'm just worried. Someone please assure me.

You can be assured, we have the OK to distribute it and you are OK to use it.

Sorry to bump this thread again but just out of curiosity, how did it come to be that Square Enix gave the go ahead for the app? Just genuinely interested, if you can not reply I understand.

We got the OK from our contact at SE to let people run this. Obviously they can't promote it or OK it themselves, as that would seem like favoritism to other developers. They are aware of it (Icehunter even sent them the source code at one point) and are OK with people using it. It only reads, no writing is done nor will ever be nor will hooks into the game be provided.

You might want to get it cleared with Intel, however. Their anti-virus interrupts the download of ffxiv-app.com as a site involved in "suspicious activity" and prompts me not to go there.

(You have to copy-paste the whole link because the forum code breaks it into two)

Probably not a ton that can be done about that. By its nature, XIVapp hooks other processes, which is inherently virusy behavior. False positives are always going to be a thing with anti-virus software. Just override it yourself if your AV complains.

I'm going to find a way to put the MD5 up with the download. As far as the "website" being suspicious. I have no clue.

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

Ah, McAfee... Yeah, if you look at the site, they still need to work on their detection.

It looks like it is tripping up on the download link.

The technique used is common, but is also something that can be used to intentionally mis-lead a person. Therefore they consider it suspicious (not sure if that is the only thing on the site, there are a couple other coding techniques that can be mis-understood or abused, such as the // links rather than having the full http://. Some parsers will trip up on this thinking that it is refering to a local path, when it is redirecting to a different server).

But, yeah, I would almost be willing to put money on the fact that they are just having a tiff about the download link having an OnClick event associated with it (since the OnClick and override and redirect the page before the HREF is even followed).
