Well good information is hard to find, and a search will bring up sites I just never visit and personally won't touch. But other than wanting to read up on mechanics for a class in a forum, I haven't had a need to really research out something I'm looking for. And databases are too young and under developed at this point to use so you get forced into exploring for what you need most often than not. I got started with fishing and I think it it takes the cake in making you figure things out. You don't know what fish are where, where the locations are, what bait to use or what conditions to catch particular fish. And for those reasons fishing has been the most fun for me.
But I'll disagree in saying needing outside wiki resources have felt needed. Provided a player is willing to spend time exploring it out in game.
To counter what you are saying...
(even though personally I hate how fishing has changed) Fishing has an in-game lexicon of every fish you can catch. Once you catch one, it becomes listed in your lexicon. Therefore, you know how many fish exist total in game (unless they are hiding fish too). By contrast, if the botany/mining logs don't even have a total items found counter, how do you even know that you've missed things if you have not mined/harvested every single node group in the game? I've never needed Sun Lemons. I would not have known where they come from. Take, for example,
this. We only know it can be bought for certain. But maybe it CAN be harvested. Or dropped. So now you either have to murder every single mob in the game repeatedly looking for it, or harvest every point in the game to find it. But it also happens to be a quest item. So now it would impede your progress had you not been able to google it and find an answer. Or sit in shout waiting for one. You'd have to scour the world for it.
You see, I prefer a game that contains what I need to know within it. I like to explore, I'm fine with that. But at least make me aware that there are things to explore for. Otherwise I'll assume it is on a vendor I just haven't found, or dropped from something I just haven't killed or been lucky to get a drop from.
