hello everyone, I was just wondering what other players opinions are of the game community in general. honestly besides my small FC, the community seems quite rude, greedy, selfish, and just in general bad. maybe it's not on all servers but I have a feeling it is. what are your opinions?

I strongly disagree about your sentiments concerning the community at large. I think that in general the community in this game is quite good. Endgame in it's current state is getting a bit nasty with certain groups of peoples attitudes and elitism, but you are talking about an incredibly small cross-section of the community there. As for myself I am just focusing on exploring the game, having fun, and experimenting with different classes. I will allow the game a few months to develop, see what types are changes are brought to the overall structure of the game before making any rash decisions or generalizations.

It's fine to be perfectly honest, If you read forums enough (and particularly the OF) you'd think the the entire playerbase are a bunch of jerks, but it's not the case. One of the major problems with engaging the community outside of the game is you get exposed to the vocal minority who are airing their grievances, whether they're valid or not. It's easy to think that you're a White Knight in a sea of people with no moral fiber, but it's pretty far from the truth. In short, people are generally fine for the most part, of course there are a few obnoxious people like you find in most parts of society. Just don't let them ruin your day.

Okay I'll concede to the fact that not everyone is an *******, and there's less of them as a percentage of overall players. It seems much worse because of the style of *******! FFXIV seems to draw in those rush to end game, get everything done first and as fast as possible players. there not even playing because they enjoy the game, they play to boost their egos. the kind of player that already thinks they know everything and anything as if born with knowledge. it's a serious problem in this game, hopefully it will die down and those people will leave, get ban for third party add on or whatever.

as I've said I enjoy this game and hope to see more stuff added and the game grow. I played XI for about six years and I'm finding myself almost enjoying this game just as much. key work there is enjoy, I actually like to play the game and don't just immediately strive for the best of everything. I take time to learn the game mechanics, explore the map try different class's. also, speaking of XI I wouldn't doubt the expansion will in fact have more XI style play. if you played it you know square likes to shake up the game mechanics with expansions and major updates changing the style of play in those given areas. I'm hoping to see more party based open world content, pop NMs, the game will also have much more armor and all that added in time. so I'm not saying it's all bad, but to say there's not an issue is just not a fact. the community does need some work, maybe nothing major but I think it could be better.

Its kind of like airplanes, you hear about the ones that crash, you don't hear anything about the 1000's of planes that land safely every day.

I was doing a quest last night, I kind of bit off more then I could chew, some WHM ran by jumped off his mount, healed me, then pulled one of the mobs off me. Killed it, then kept healing me and then ran off after everything was dead. I could have kissed him.

I sent him a tell saying thanks, but its not like I went into FC chat to discuss how awesome he was.

Now when someone is being an ***, most people tend to go to FC chat or whatever and ***** about it.

I really like the airplane metaphor. It describes a lot of how I feel about the community.

If you only read the forums (especially the official ones), you'd be under the impression that the game is full of asshats. In reality, there are a lot of really friendly and helpful players.

Another issue is confirmation bias. Some (very vocal) people have the idea that the entire community is "toxic" and thus pay too much attention to those players' actions and not those of the people that are building up a good community.

The majority of the community is fine. Like RL, there is that small percentage that f's it up for everyone. One thing I noticed is if you're sitting in a random camp when people shout for a raise they almost always get one, that wouldn't happen if the community was complete poo.

If you mind your Ps and Qs, other players will follow suit.

I always make it a point to say "hello" in a Duty Finder party, chat folks up, let them know if it's my first time in the dungeon or someone else's - that first level of communication coming from the healer tends to be really reassuring to everyone. I took a cue from FFXI and always say "thanks for the party!" before I leave.

One of my favorite videos in the last few years is Traffic Waves - the idea that traffic jams are caused by people not being nice to each other, and a single nice person can unblock an entire snarled and angry mass of traffic simply by being polite and letting folks in.

I take that attitude in life in general, now. A single person not being a jerk can brighten everyone's day a little bit.

There's not much social stuff yet. Everyone is all about leveling, leveling, leveling or gil, gil, gil right now.

Once everything calms down and there's not a lot of stuff left to do, that's the point where we'll get a community. Dont count on one for now atleast. People are gonna be ***** till they're in the top ranks, then they'll mellow out.

I've found it a mixed bag...

Some people are very nice and have gone out of their way to help me (I'm still quite the newbie!).

Others have names like "Spankin Damonkey" and act as politely as you'd expect someone with a name like that to act.

Pretty much the same as every other MMO out there. People love to make comments about other communities but human nature is pretty universal. WoW, GW2, AoC, WAR(RIP!) and others I've played have all been about the same.

Be a **** and pester people, then wonder why people are a **** to you.

I saw a dude die in a level 10 FATE and ******* to a CNJ via /shout why he's a terrible player for not raising him then proceeded to say the FFXIV community was terrible, selfish, blah blah. The dude's homepoint was like a 30 second walk away, bit this was "a matter of principle" apparently. I could've raised him but after that spill I declined. He can keep ******** about it as far as I care. Negativity breeds negativity. If you're rude to me I'm not obliged to be nice or helpful to you.

Also when you die to quest mobs that you were supposed to use an item on to weaken, but you didnt because you're too impatient to read the quest text that explicitly tells you to use the item, I'm not obliged to enable your continued stupidity and lack of patience just to make it easier for you when I had already learned to pay attention.

I'e met some very good players, very nice people who may not be as good as me but actually wanted to improve instead of demand things be handed to them then cry about the community when they dont get exactly what they want. If you're having problems with the community, remember you're also a part of it and you tend to get back what you put into it.

I have never once shouted for a raise!
For goodness sake it's like a five second run back - tele or w/e.
If you don't have your Home Point set in the right area - tough!
Seems like this current generation of gamers is full of "gimme it right now!"
people who clearly never experienced Tanaka in his most evil game blocking tactics!
