So what's the deal with generating materia?

Specifically, can you target certain types of materia? (quicktongue III for example)

But controlled by the level of the gear, right?

Can't get tier 3 materia off level 1 gear?

The tier of materia that you get depends on the gears ilvl:
Materia Tier 1 = ilvl 15+
Materia Tier 2 = ilvl 30+
Materia Tier 3 = ilvl 45+
Materia Tier 4 = ilvl 75+ / very slight chance from ilvl 55+ (maybe ~10%)

Edit: The type of materia you get is random. However, it seems that gear primarily gives materia that is related to the the jobs that it fits. ie. Gear for THM/BLM gives materia like +spell speed, +int, etc.

I pulled a craftsman competence IV off of a 55 goldsmith pants when I swapped them for HQ. That was the only one I have received.

Slight nitpick: it should be ilvl 1+ gear. So the range of gear that can give Tier 1 Materia is very wide (ilvl 1 to ilvl 29).

Quick addition/nitpick too, but having a Level 30+ piece doesnt automatically mean you get a Tier 2 materia as far as i know. There's still a chance you get a Tier 1 materia.

Same as Lv.55 gear giving either a Tier 3 or a Tier 4 materia. Seems to me they overlap a little, but never by more than one tier as far as i know. I've definitely gotten some Tier 2 materia's from a Tier 3 piece.

So realistically:

Materia Tier 1 = ilvl 1~44
Materia Tier 2 = ilvl 30~50
Materia Tier 3 = ilvl 45~55 (or something like that atleast atleast)
Materia Tier 4 = ilvl 75+

Are you sure that you were looking at the item's ilvl and not the item's level (the level at which you can wear gear)?

Well, now that you mention that, not 100%... it could have had a diffirent ilvl. Hmmm... Time to convert more stuff till i see it happen again ._.;

I could have sworn I ran into an item like this (gear level was 30 or higher but ilvl was 29 or lower). But I can't seem to figure out what it would have been, and XIV DB doesn't return any items like that.

Not quite. It is DoW, DoH, DoL specific, but otherwise yes random within each of those types.

I recently converted an ilvl 29 item into a Tier II materia. I was wondering if the level at which items start to convert into Tier II was simply lower than 30. Today, I converted two Silver Rings of Crafting (ilvl 27), and got one Tier I materia and one Tier II materia.

I know I read somewhere they fiddled with the ilvl and %'s for T IV materia. I've converted half a dozen madman's rods and only received ele or piety in 2.0. I did one yesterday and got a crit IV......which I immediatly slotted into my Vanya robe :D

I recall being surprised the same day when I got a T III crafting materia from an awl I was sure would cap at T II. I don't remember reading about the lower tier materia but it's certainly possible, if not in the realm of 'confirmed'.

Not to nit pick but with 2.1 its now:

I level of gear to Obtain from:
Materia Tier 1 = ilvl 1~29
Materia Tier 2 = ilvl 30~44
Materia Tier 3 = ilvl 45+
Materia Tier 4 = ilvl 45+

Basically, a level 49 earring can now give a t3 or t4 materia. According to Yoshi himself, you can get t4 materia from anything that gives t3.

Thanks for the clarification, that awl must have been an ilvl of 45 and I just wasn't paying attention :)

Yoshi was probably sick of them selling for 180k. They were indeed very rare. Now it is sad to see that the Control II materia sells for almost as much as Control IV (2 is needed for full patrician's melds). This is due to the fact that IV's are now easier to obtain, plus they are given out in the CT and new main quest lines.

Control II materia also feel like they're higher priced than they should be in general. I'm betting that it's mainly due to triple turn in leves being the primary leveling method for crafts during the stretch where you would be wearing gear that can convert into Tier II. So we wind up with relatively fewer Tier II crafting materia being made compared to Tier I (before triple turn in leves start) and Tier III (after people are done leveling and start crafting for profit and everyday stuff).

I just got a Tier 3 materia from Linen Chausses (ilvl 33). So perhaps there was a more generalized change with 2.1 where items that normally convert to Tier N now have a small chance of converting into Tier N+1.

The 1st days after patch my lv 50 made 5 tier 4s and I went to town and said bye to about 30 tier 3 pieces I dumped on the boards. I haven't made a tier 4 since.Smiley: lol Black pearls make purple quick tongue, skill speed and the 3 red heavens one quite frequently.

I converted three lvl 49 rings the other night, and got one tier IV and two tier IIIs.

In related news, materia prices seem to be plummeting fairly rapidly...

Well, Tier 4's are quest rewards now. For a mandatory quest as well, so every single player in the world will get atleast a Tier 4 crafting piece of their choice and a Tier 4 combat piece of their own choice. Meaning especially these first few days when everyone and their fairy godmother is doing the quests, the boards will be flooded by people who dont understand simple economics and will ruin prices for everyone.

Luck has it that you can buy up the materia for cheap now and just wait it out till the supply of it stops and the reserve pool of 80 that are currently on the boards are gone, then go ahead and list them for 200-300k again. You just made 195-295k profit.

When you say stuff like that Kojiro, it makes you seem like you dont understand simple economics.

It wasn't just the quest changed that increased the amount of t4 materia, its the other 3 changes they made
1) all t3 items can now make t4 as well.
2) sb rate on i 51+ items was increased
3) increased the rate of getting t4

Ergo the supply went up 10 fold or more, and is now considerably easier to get, and t4 materia is only good for crafter AF gear, and i70 crafted DL alternative gear (jewlery being the best option). So now there is way more t4 materia then will ever be needed, the demand is way down.

Good luck buying all those materia and then realizing later the supply wont dry up and your stuck holding worthless merchandise that has price droped even further.
