Tanking 101Follow

#1 Oct 17 2013 at 4:15 PM Rating: Decent
So I was in the dungeon for the grand company at level 44 and was owned badly.
I am a 44 Palandin..Galka...I have HQ weapons and armor.
So when you are tanking..
oath of shield
mark the target..
flash then do the fast/savage/halone
Then flash again.
Is there something I am missing?
When I am doing fates the mobs are all over me without flash.I normaly pull mob away from higher levels..

Please any suggestions ?

FATEs are a really bad judge of your tanking abilities. I've found it tons easier to tank in a FATE on MRD than I did my one turn in Halatai (That was a horrid run). Now, the major issue here is that you posted very few details.

- Owned how exactly? Did a group of enemies tear you down or did a boss?
- HQ gear, but what gear? My level 30MRD( now WAR) has HQ... but it's currently level 20 since I haven't stopped to craft in a bit
- Did your group die or you? If it was your group, you cannot shoulder full blame, but one thing is that you do need to swap targets, Flash is not enough.

The devil is always in the details.

It sounds to me that you're doing fairly well. You'll have to judge when and how your combos will serve you. My tactics change when I'm facing differents mobs and different numbers of them as well. If DPS doesn't attack my target, I will often switch in between mobs to build combos on all of them and throw in a flash for extra enmity. You'll have to play around and definitely keep your eyes on the enmity guage near the names and move accorindly with it.

One thing you may want to do is pull mobs (watch which are connected so you know which ones will come with it) with Shield lob.

I can't remember the level 44 dungeon off the top of my head, but I do remember the monsters hitting hard around that level. Keep Shield Oath up at all times, or your healers won't like you.

Aside from that, really check your gear and make sure you're set up with good stuff - AF is just around the corner for you. Those will suffice until you start farming for Darklight.

If you've gotten yourself in check with tactics and gear, perhaps your not the issue. DPS attacking/pulling other targets make things difficult as well as healers not being sure what they're doing. You'll have to judge accordingly and try to be on top of things. You're a tank and may be the defacto leader in some instances. If you mess up (like I have numerous times), fess up and apologize, yet also be respectful when suggesting things to your party members.

I'm rooting for you and I hope you figure out whatever is dragging you down.

Was it trash mobs that were getting you or the boss? I remember one of the bosses there (it may not have been that dungeon) wasn't able to be tanked or something the one who falls all the time (I don't know Im a DPS just going by what i remember from Demazal or whatever the dungeon is called)

Did the eye get you? Or the exploding pods...or the frogs? I have a tank in my FC that had no issues in Stone Vigil or the Sunken Temple but had a nightmare in Darkhold I wouldn't worry about it too much. If your gear is updated and you are wanting to learn enough to post on here about it I'm sure it was just one of those runs.

So I'm betting the floating eye got you?

You can reduce the damage from its attack by standing in the light of the crystals in the area. You'll know it's working from a floating eye buff you'll receive in the safe zone.

It also only patrols the main corridor, so some of the side caverns with treasure are safe as well.

The hardest part is getting to the room with the two locks. The eye will get stuck in the doorway and spam its attack, but further past the door is a ton of mobs you have a hard time not aggroing all at once. That's a challenge for everyone to survive.

When you target a mob, it will tell you which other mob it is linked aggro with.

When it comes to pull, the best method if there are multiple linked groups and you only need to pull one group, is to provoke. This is because Provoke has double the range of Shield Lob, and assuming you number the mob you should not need to use Provoke (which has relatively short CD) again in the battle. Shield Lob them when they come into range. Either that or have a ranged player pull the mobs.

Know what your mitigation ability is useful for which situation. Your Physical defense and Shield block is useless against magic, so do not spam those ability when fighting something like the Revenant. Rampart and the like on the other hand reduce all damage done. Do not stack all mitigation at once, use them sparingly so that you have at least one buff on at a time and even out the damage you take, otherwise you might get spike damage and healer slow reaction would mean death. This is particularly true when it comes to later content like Titan HM table flip you should have a mitigation ready for it, not spamming mitigation ability.

Yes it was the Floating eye.It was stuck in the way and we had mobs everywhere..Also at the boss fights I am to concentrate on keeping his hate right? What do I do with the other smaller mobs that attack the healer..am I to focus on boss? Once I learn the nuances of the fight I understand my role. The one where you have to kill the lesser mobs that are tearing at the wall so they dont produce more ( I cant remember dungeon name.)

Keeping the eye in the crystal light should be your priority. After awhile, the light dims and moves to another crystal in the cavern, so you have to move it from lit crystal to lit crystal from time-to-time. The adds can't be ignored or else they'll start to overwhelm your healer, but the DPS should be able to knock them out quick, even without your help. But if the eye gets loose or remains out of the light too long, all is lost, so that's definitely the most important thing.
