My wife's and my accounts were flagged yesterday for investigation due to possible "suspicious and/or malicious behavior. " we are both very casual players who don't even have a 50 in any class yet. The only deviation, if you can even call it that, was that I started selling my stockpiles of fish (every thing caught from 1-46), and a bunch of materia I harvested from low lvl gear.
What perplexes me is my wife's account getting flagged at the same time.

I'm assuming we got flagged because neither of us set up the security key when we made our accounts. All we had to do was re set our passwords to get back in the game. However, according to the email, the accounts are under investigation.

Anyone else get this type of seemingly random flag?

Whenever i get an email saying "Login now to change your password or you are getting banned", i really just ignore it completely. It's often times scammers, it's incredibly easy to spoof a sender's email adress. And sometimes they even go through the trouble of making the mail itself seem official too.

Just dont click any links and "reset" passwords there, you basicly just gave your account away if you did.

You did nothing even remotely suspicious, so SE should not be doing anything to you. I'm not saying they never get it wrong, or that they're not a bit... obsessive about sticking to their point of view no matter how flawed it seems, but... I really dont think you have anything to worry about, unless you... like... amassed 10 milion gil in a day with those fishes...

I agree about not clicking random sent email, however this was legit. We were locked out of the game completely before I/we checked that there was an email identifying the issue, and the steps needed to be taken to get back in the game.

One of possibility may be because someone tried to access your accounts through some illegitimate methods. I had a friend receive similar emails. It turned out that someone tried to access his account and they had to make the owner of the account reset everything in, what i assume, was a effort to keep that account secure for the actual owner of it.

If you dont have a security token associated with your account and you try to log in from another IP address it automatically flags you, then a password reset is all you need to do to get back in. If your ISP hands you a new IP address this will happen. I'd advise getting the authenticator anyway.

This is ture. It will also flag your account if you don't log in on a particular device for a period of time. I have three. My PC, PS3, and Office PC. I am asked to update the password regularly. I think its mainly because of the PC at work bring a different IP address.

Yep, this is what happened to the person who had this occur a few weeks ago.

Someone has your SE username out there (or they guessed it) and they're trying to get into your account.

Get a token ASAP.

What game will you play with your token?

I have an elaborate password because my security token is broken. I can't use it and the codes it generates won't allow me to remove it to install a new one. I got the one for FFXI, for more storage space >.<

I have yet to hear back from SE on the issue.

You really really have to call them. Email support will NOT solve this issue.

It will if you pester them enough. It took me a month and numerous messages back and forth but eventually they stopped wanting to hear from me and dealt with it. I had to give them the original keys to my games (which I had done already ANYWAY when I first requested the support), but they removed my bad token.

I still think their customer service is some of the worst in the industry, but I'm glad they worked with me on the issue.
