Quick first impressions of my return.Follow

After leaving the cluster@#%^ that was the original FFXIV, I decided this morning I woul dgive S-E a chance with 2.0.

So, I reactivated my account ( even upgraded to the CE for the hell of it ) and paid for a month of time.

So, my first impressions after playing for the last 5 or so hours.

On my pc, the original FFXIV was a slideshow even on low settings due to it's unoptimized nature and this was one of my major annoyances originally. However, after putting in 5+ hours of ARR at 1920 x 1080 full screen with max settings ( every option toggled on I could find ), the game runs smooth as butter. Blew me away.

Another major annoyance of the original was combat. I always felt I was fighting the game mechanics more than I was fighting the mobs. However, the combat now is smooth and fluid. Absolutely great. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, or even try to like the original ( the biggest flaw of the original combat system in my opinion ). It just works. It's great.

And now content. The original FFXIV bored me to tears after doing nothing but leve/leve/leve. There was no direction or purpose other than grind to the next cutscene. Now, I'm constantly doing something via the new questing. I haven't touched a leve, haven't even thought about a leve. And although they're mostly fetch/kill quests like every other mmo, at least they add a bit of story and purpose. They don't feel like "filler" where you just just skip the text and go-go-go.

Finally, weapons/items. I haven't even needed to look at the AH. Just buying "normal" stuff from the vendors to supplement quest items has kept me going nicely. I don't feel like I'm having to grind out gil for hours just to afford decent gear for one more level. Nice improvement.

Now, I'm only level 10 right now, so no idea how it gets higher up. But if the game is like this the rest of the way to 50, I may just have to send ol' Yoshi a bucket of champagne.

It really is like that all the way to 50, apart from the occasional grind at some points.

Most people's complaints at the moment are regarding content at 50 (i.e. not enough of it). Should be rectified somewhat with 2.1 though.

Yeah, it can't get a bit boring when leveling up your 2nd/3rd class/job though once you run out of quests and are forced to grind out fates. Very few fate parties chat, so it can get to be hours of silent grinding. The dungeons are a lot of fun though, and I'd recommend you run them a few times, if only to learn your job mechanics (something you don't really learn in fate parties).

Oh - and to Blowfin above - that's probably my fav Vonnegut quote in your sig. Smiley: grin

Welcome back! I had a very similar experience, but I started playing during the 3rd phase of the beta.

This game is truly good, especially for those of us who had a miserable experience with 1.0.

Once you hit the level 10 quest storyline you'll be expected to do a leve, and you'll want to eventually do at least one in each area to unlock them for the crafting and field classes(which is where leves are really the workhorses.) Fishing can get nutso exp off a single leve - I think I've broken 40K a shot off HQ turn in at level 30.

Welcome back!

Now see, I can handle that. Leves as a tool is fine with me. But as main content like it used to be? Oh man...

And thanks for all the "welcomes" guys. :)

Haha, I remember spamming leves out at Nophica's Wells in 1.0 and... gosh, even that part of Thanalan looks totally different now. The only place that stayed vaguely the same was Little Ala Mihgo.

The only bad thing about this game at this point for me is that it can be too much fun... I find yourself bleary-eyed and grinding for just one more level...

But yea, this game is so much better. Try out the crafting, you can actually avoid buying weapons/armor, and just make your own. Plus it doesn't hurt to have them leveled.

Not yet. I'm gonna get a character set up there today and then see about getting in the FC.

Yeah, I need to check out the crafting and field stuff. I'm still trying to catch up on everything that's changed in the game.

Crafting is absolutely different. Gone is the retarded mini-game with no hint of what the hell any of it did. It's very clear how to craft, and as you level the various DoH classes, you gain more abilities to control your crafting. You're still subject to the RNG to some degree, but you can minimize its influence by a ton.

Gathering also lost the minigame, and now you can actually select what you want rather than just randomly getting.. something. Fishing is the only negative change in my opinion. I liked the schools of fish as opposed to the randomness that they have now. But I'm getting used to it. The other day went fly fishing for a few hours out in Upper La Noscea. Was so relaxing and enjoyable piling up fish, which I am now turning to bait to level more. And I never once lost one of the 24 lures I made (Is there actually a way to lose one...?)

Regardless, the game is so much more fun, and so much more addictive the way it is made now than 1.0's buggy, laggy, boring mess.

I broke a line once. Just once. In 41 levels of fishing. Lost a chocobo lure. Smiley: bah

I have broken a line and lost a yumizuno ( was not a happy bunnySmiley: oyvey)
I've also lost a catch and had the fish run off with my lure - it was the toad one - that actually made me laugh!
I love fishing, just got 50 today ^^ and as a bi-product, with the aid of stealth, I think I have completed every open world map
just all the dungeons to go!
