Vanya should be transitional pieces. They are used to bridge the gap between darklight and AF2 / Allagan armors. When penta melded, they offer more stats than darklight, and make great transitional pieces because due to different materia and dye combinations they are customizable. Plus you can convert them for a guaranteed IV materia once you get the AF2 / Allagan BiS piece.


So, why wouldn't I skip DL altogether? I mean, why spend the tomes on DL pieces, when I can just buy the mats for Vanya? I could even use some of the money I've been hoarding for melds. With the cost of mats set to drop in the near future (Monday) it seems like a waste to grind away for DL stuffs when I can spend a combination of gil and tomes on Vanya.

I was thinking about doing the pants DL at least because that recipe requires 27 Phil mats alone lol. Are there specific pieces where DL outshines Vanya or Rosegold? Same question for the jewelry. If I can just make Rosegold now, why would I even bother getting DL?

You certainly can.

Although I would wait for 2.1 before making any leg items other than Darksteel.

Just curious, why not the leg items? So make all the other pieces but legs?

Vanya legs take 27 tome items, rings/braclet/necklace all take 18. The rest of your WHM 2 star gear takes only 9 each. There are reports that all 2 star items will require only 9 tome items after 2.1, so don't spend 27 now when there's a chance it will only cost 9 in 4 days.

It's definitely viable just very expensive. If you have the gil, I'd go with Vanya/Rosegold because it will last you till you get mythology or Allagan gear. It will also aid you quite a bit in coil and CT coming up! To boost your HP to appropriate levels, casters often meld their accessories with VIT.

That's a pretty saucy rumor if it's true about recipe changes. If they change that and change the number of tomes each mat costs and then you add beast quests the roulette etc I'm definitely skipping DL
