ffxiv tech issues (sound)Follow

so i play on a laptop which is connected through hdmi to my tv and use my tv screen as display (and its also where the sound comes from) and I play ffxiv in fullscreen mode.

that being said sometimes after I put in my username and password and get to the title screen there is no sound.. the only remedy is to exit the game and restart it/login again and hope I get sound the second time (which I do 100% of the time) the other issue is when in game sometimes I hit the windows key to browse the net or do something else while I play and when I go ack to the game there is no sound again (when there was sound before I hit the windows key) the only remedy is to again exit the game (logging out to the title screen does not work) and re start the game all over again). is there any idea what causes the no sound issue and if possible anyone know a permanent fix for it?

And I would prefer helpful responses as opposed to the "play using your lap[top screen instead" or "dont play in fullscreen" responses Im sure SOMEONE is gonna give just because Im the one making the thread.

Have you tried running the game in windowed mode? Are your sound drivers up to date?

Try this... run the game in windowed mode. When the game loads and is silent right-click your speaker icon and click "Playback Devices". Make sure the TV or HDMI output is set as default. Something could be preventing your drivers from switching output to the appropriate device.

Do you use a wireless headset too? Could that be switching on and stealing your sound? Just guessing here.

Intermittent issues are a ***** to troubleshoot, good luck man.

This is what I noticed about the sound. If I have my headphones pulled in before I start the launcher it works fine. But if i pull out my headphones there is no sound from the tv/laptop etc unless restart the launcher without the headphones. SO YOU WANT SOUND START LAUNCHER WITH WHAT EVER YOU WANT THE SOUND TO COME THROUGH OR YOU WILL HAVE TO RESTART IT. I hope that helps. I see no way around this issue they need to fix it.

I believe that the XIV client uses whatever the last default sound output, which would be why headphones and HDMI cables confuse it when you change sound outputs suddenly.

It's poor hardware integration that it doesn't change in real time, but not that uncommon either (even Microsoft Lync is guilty of it.) Reptiletim's suggestion is the best one to test if that's the case. Or, just make sure your HDMI cable is plugged in ahead of time and/or your sound settings are as you wish before you launch the game.

well what i use is already plugged in from the start so there is no "plugging in afterwards" Also i talked to tech support and they suggested playing in borderless windoweded mode which I did and i still had the issue.

As for my playback deices when I go to them and test the sound (before starting ffxiv) i get no sound so then I disable and reenable and test again then start ffxiv and I get sound... if i lose sound in game i go to playback devices and test sound again and the sound is working just fine its just not working in ffxiv

It sounds like FFXIV isnt playimg nice with your sound drivers for whatever reason. Is this the only game you experience the problem on?

Also what is the name of your sound card? What OS are you running?

i dont play any other games on my laptop so i cant speak on if it works on other games.. i know sometime so dont hear sounds when im watching stuff on youtube or windows stuff that would usually beep but the fix that all i would do it go to "playback devices" then disable the default device and enable it back" then the sound works... that however doesnt work with FFXIV the only way that works is exiting the game completely and restarting it.

I use my televsion as s display adapter and the sound from it is where the sound comes from i think thats the issue.. communicating the sound from the pc to it. Im almost certain if i just used the laptop only (and not hook it to the tv for display or sound) then t would work. Im on Windows 8.1

This happens to me on occasion too. I play on PS3, and if I turn off the TV or change input channel and come back, sometimes the sound will be completely gone, or I'll only have the interface sounds left. It's weird, and the only way to fix it is to completely log out. So I don't think it's purely a sound card compatibility issue.

I have an Alienware 14 and I have the same issue. When FFXIV is in full screen I get no sound when using HDMI to TV. When I am in Windowed mode, however, I do get sound. I use borderless window for FFXIV. I also have the same issue with Skyrim. Other games like Reckoning will play sound in full screen mode. Why this is I have no clue.

Youtube, Netflix, Hulu and video in general all play sound through my TV with no problem. Its only certain games that seem to have the issue. I would say its a compatibility issue.

Current System:
Alienware 14
Windows 7
Native Resolution 1366x768
TV Resolution 1920x1080
GeForce GT 750M
Intel Core i5 4200M 2.50 GHZ
Driver Version 347.09
