60HQ Umbral rocks is what you need to mine up from a once a game day node to get the pick.


The Umbrals spawn at the South Shroud, Camp Tranquill 6am game time.

Requires 370 Gathering to gather, and HQ requires 332 Perception.

If you go for this, I would recommend you get to at least 90%/1%, with>600 GP.

Using that, I was able to get 60 HQ Rocks in 3 days (roughly 3-4 per node) with moderately casual play.
By using Dzemael Gratin, I am able to get to 635 GP. This allows me to do the following:

  • Hit to expose the Astral Rock
  • Use Sharp Vision
  • Use Unearth II (Giving 31+ HQ chance)
  • Hit the node 4 times (3*(5 GP per hit) will push you back up to 300 GP)[li] [li]Use Solid Reason (if you got at least 3 successful hits... RNG can curse you...)
  • Hit the node 1 more times
  • Use Deep Vigor if it activated
  • Hit the last time (Getting the guaranteed HQ if Deep Vigor is active)


Even with the risk of missing, the chance of HQ is so dramatically higher (and yes the RNG in this game is So odd).

I have ranged from only twice not getting anything, to getting as high as 5 HQ on a single node.
I consistently got 3-4 HQ every time using the above, with 95% after Solid Reason.

If you're concerned about the RNG cursing you, make yourself curse-proof for only 500 GP and guarantee that you get at least one HQ:

Swing at slot 7
Solid Reason to get the swing back (300 GP)
Whatever level of Sharp Vision gets you to 100% success (level II was enough for me - 100 GP) <-- ***** you, RNG!
Unearth I to raise HQ chance by 10% (100 GP)
Swing five times then use Deep Vigor
Swing and get a guaranteed HQ

No food required.

The payoff is so much greater with the above method, rather than forcing the 1X. Currently I am sitting at 8 logs in my botany quest out of 2 attempts (not counting the first one, as I toasted all my GP just to expose the node). I already have my Dolabra, and my hat (from mining). But, I would rather have a realistic chance to get 5 off a single node, than have a single one I know I am going to get (with a realistic chance of getting 1 additional one).

With the 100% success strat (and I know if I push my melds I can get to 600+100%, but I can't afford it), I get ~1.25~1.5 average logs per node, with the 30%+ strat, I end up with ~3 average logs per node. It is ridiculous how broken the RNG is in this game. But, at 10%, I would get 1 extra log every 2-4 nodes, with 30%+ I always get 2-4 logs a node. With the rare 5 HQ and the rare 1 HQ. I have only had one where I got no HQ using the 30% strat, and I have never gotten 6 either way...

I've had quite a lot of success being cautious. I use the ability to take me to 100 (I'm doing this on Botanist rather than Miner right now). The extra swing is a given. I also have enough GP to be able to use the 10% boost to HQ and then convert the last in the chain to a guaranteed HQ. 10% is not much but I have walked away with 2-3 HQs from one node quite a bit. You always get one and sometimes get lucky. So I kinda agree with Qslick. I need 18 more logs and I'm done with both (already have my hat). Might try the suggested method out on Miner though.
