This starts tomorrow and I'd like to use it as a chance to see how the game is progressing. I haven't played since about February and I know a ton has changed. I follow the forums obviously so I know the basics about the newer content, but still don't really know of where I should even begin when logging on. Is there a walkthrough of content that's been released and how to unlock it? Or just some general pointers would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Maybe start at the waking sands/Mor Dhona and get all the main story stuff done. You can't really progress very far until you've moved that along depending on where you left off.

Otherwise you could go to the lodestone and get the different patch release notes. They usually have the quest givers in them.

Welcome back :)

Free weekend huh? Maybe I'll check it out... is it worth re-subbing now?
#5 Jul 17 2014 at 12:22 PM Rating: Excellent
If you lost interest before, I'm not sure if you'd suddenly be interested again now. There are more dungeons to do, and a new crystal tower raid, but overall the feel of the content is similar, just with more options. I'm happy as a clam right now, but I also never got bored.

You won't like hunts unless you have a long-term interest in the game, seeing as how the main benefit of doing hunts now is getting i110 gear for tougher content.

One big change is the addition of Frontlines, which is lots of fun and easy to just jump into.

From what I've seen, they've added a crazy amount of content, and one of my biggest gripes (lack of open world content) seems to have been alleviated with hunts. I don't know if I'll sub or not, but I'm interested enough to try it out again. I'm only playing F2P mmo's currently (lotro mainly) so I've got the budget for it if I enjoy it.

I lost interest mainly because my fiance quit playing, and she quit because there wasn't enough casual content to keep her interest.

She hated doing dungeons and grinding gear... oh well, I may not even bother logging in besides maybe to say hi and see the FC house again.

You're either going to love them or hate them, lol. They're absolutely cutthroat and crazy... and you have to be FAST, or you have no chance.

I really do still have a lingering distaste for how they handled that.

I have a character, that, by profession, is a hunter, but the hunt mechanics are so over-crowded that I can't practice that in gameplay.

It's not hunting as it is so much a mad rush towards a spawn in hopes your party nets more than the minimum reward. It did nothing to address the blatant cheating problem around it too. I do hope they add more extensive revisions in the future. Until then, count me in the hate category.

---------------------------

As far as the Login weekend. If you can, give Frontlines a try. Even if you're not a fan of PvP it can be an entertaining way of getting your Tomes to cap and it really does feel light on the whole commitment part.

Also, unlock as many dungeons as possible. Some really good stand-outs right now was Amdpoor Township, Hullbreaker Isle, and Tam Tara Deepcroft (Hard)

Open World wise, if you don't find Elite Marks to your liking due to congestion, try Treasure Hunts. There's a chance now that within a chest you'll get a secondary hunt to partake in that ups the difficulty and rewards. It's semi-instanced, but you won't have to deal with the frustration of fighting or joining a zerg.

There's also the scouting period, when your party splits up between zones and runs around looking for the marks. The vast majority of players don't use third-party programs. However, many players belong to two or more hunt linkshells, and with so many people roaming the zones, the marks are found pretty quickly. As soon as someone finds a mark, they announce their position in party chat... and then someone in the party tells their linkshells... and then EVERYONE in those linkshells tells their parties and their linkshells... in less than five seconds, that initial "<t> sighted at <pos>!" announcement has been relayed to just about every single active hunt party, and then the race is on.

I've personally found a couple of A-rank elite marks in more remote places where other people weren't looking, and I was the first one there by a long time. It wasn't until after I announced to my party (starting the chain reaction) that others started showing up.

All of that said, it only takes one person finding an elite mark with a third-party tool to start the same horde chain reaction... but parties that actively scout and don't just wait at the teleport crystals are undoubtably more successful.

Searching may be better than just sitting around waiting, but it seems that the most successful groups and players are the ones who have access to the best source of information. From what I've observed trying hunts in groups, there often tends to be one or two people who call where the mobs are 90% of the time, before anyone else. If someone asks how they manage to get that information so often, they tend to either say they're in a very active hunt linkshell or they're collaborating with others using voice chat.

Which makes perfect sense given the way that this content is set up. While running around looking may be more efficient than doing nothing at all, having the most reliable eyes and ears spanning multiple locations in multiple zones is going to be worlds more efficient than that or anything else, especially considering that the most reliable "sources" across all of these zones may also be using radar.

For sure... but in such heavily contested content, any edge can be the difference between being there for the start of a pull vs. getting there a few seconds too late. My parties have found quite a few marks ourselves, allowing us to be among the first on scene. If you wait for something to be relayed from another party into linkshell chat and into your party chat, then there's more of a chance you'll get there either as the mark is being killed or just after it dies.

Also, I'm a member of two hunt linkshells. One is completely silent and lame, and nobody helps each other at all. The other is extremely vocal and collaborative, and members of the ls will have various parties going (and sharing information) constantly. In each party, I'm sure it's the linkshell members who are that "one guy" communicating all the info, even though all those call-outs are the culmination of several parties actively scouting and indirectly working together.

Well yes, I'm sure it is the linkshell member that ends up communicating that info, but my point is that most of the time hunts ends up being for the most part what Hyrist has experienced, a mad rush to the spawn when information is out. I can go to some zones that aren't "open" and look around for B ranks and possibly find one, but the ones where any A/S rank pop is known to be up are swarmed with people searching around, and the chances of just happening across one is much lower than the possibility that one of the other dozens of people (some unknown percentage using radar apps) finding it first and spreading that information like wildfire. The whole concept of gathering in groups and searching for your mob legitimately is a nice thought, but in reality it ends up being a mad dash once information is spread the vast majority of the time, and there's nothing anyone can do to change that. I can't take away others' ability to scan a large chunk of the zone with radar, I can't stop the zone from being swarmed with players doing this content to upgrade their gear, and if I'm not using third party apps then I can only cover one tiny little portion of the map at any given moment when someone else who may or may not be using radar collaborates with dozens upon dozens of others who also may or may not be using radar to find the mobs far more quickly than anyone else.

Whether I'd like them to be or not, this is the game that hunts have become, and the only options for someone who doesn't like that game is to look around for B rank scraps in zones that people aren't paying attention to, follow the herd, or simply just not do the content. So far I'm leaning toward the third option, but I may give it another shot from time to time just to see if my experience changes at all from what it's been so far.

That's kinda the point of the free weekend. You get to login for free and if what you find strikes you as something you'd like to continue, you re-sub...

Stuff I would knock out if I was coming back after a break: Next chunk of storyline, fight with Ramuh, trying out Frontlines which is kind of insanely fun (and way less frustrating than 4v4 PvP to me.)

Depending on how much story there was to do (e.g if you had done 2.2 content or not) you can certainly knock that out in a weekend.

I wish I would have known about that before the19th, they sent a email at 9pm and I'm not spending hours to patch a game. It sucks World of Tanks is a free game and I spend way more money playing it than I ever did with FF14.

I kinda feel bad about the free weekend. I wish it were a free week or even 14 days. I just can't bring myself to reinstall the game for a 72 hour window. I think the only thing that's been added that strikes me is frontlines, but I get my PvP fix from other games.

Just curious, did they send out emails to people about the free weekend? I think I had linked my school email to my account and I recently transferred so I don't have access anymore...

I think they just tacked 3 days time onto all of the inactive accounts. Kinda the same thing they did when ARR launched.

As for the launcher, it should automatically update when you try to open it. You may need to do a fresh install. Pretty much the reason why I think I'll wait until the next major content for a free weekend Smiley: lol

If on PC try launching as administrator, every now and then I'll have that problem if I haven't updated on one of my PCs in a while.

I noticed a queue too, but it was one of the fakes ones that seems to happen even when a world isn't full.

Blah, so much for that. I'm crashing out of the loading screen repeatedly. I've tried a few fixes and it's not working, so I guess it's just not meant to be. Oh well.

Kinda sad. They reactivate all of the inactive accounts to welcome everyone back and let them see what they were missing. Problem is, they forgot that what's missing is the server capacity to handle all of the players logging into the game.
