How does one do 3 star recipes?Follow

Hello all,

Long story short, I stopped playing shortly after patch 2.1. I still enjoyed the game, but life was busy, and blah blah, so on. I now have some free time and I decided to come back. That being said before I left, I had my Goldsmith pretty much maxed out. I have 347 craftsmanship, 318 control, and 347 CP without food. Now I come back, look at the new 3 star crafts and I have no idea how to get near those requirements of 391 craft and 374 control. HQ chilled popoto soup will get me the craftsmanship, but I am missing 56 control.

That being said, I checked the market and the only thing I am missing out on is upgrading from red coral to mosshorn earrings, and the raptorskin purse to the new dodore belt (both are new to me) But that is only 5 more control.

Are there new quest based items available? I checked the gavel of the luminary thinking they might have made that worthwhile now, but no such luck.

From my understanding you absolutely need the i70 crafting tools to even be able to attempt 3-stars. I don't know what's involved with getting them though.

You can get a quest from an NPC named Guiding Star that will have you crafting a really tough HQ item that serves as a token turn in. Ten of these will get you an i70 head piece that will boost your stats a bit, and then 50 more will get you an i70 crafting tool. This tool with proper (read: almost 100% maxxed control) melds will put you just over the stat limit to craft 3-star items.

Pretty much. The original intent, or at least one of the reasons for the high requirements, was to stymie the people who were just materia melding to stuff like the Dodore Doublet and Patrician sets to avoid having to meld job-specific AFs, saving some money and materia frustration in the process.

Rambling aside, though! You basically need to fully meld all of your job's crafting gear, the i55 stuff, and even after that you need to get the i70 Artisan tools. To do that you need to ...

1) Make 5 HQ versions of the i70 materials, depending on the job you're looking at (Darksteel Ingots for BSM and ARM, Hard Hippogryph Leather for LTH, etc. etc.).
2) Trade those in for a Mastercraft Recipe Book to Talan, an NPC in Mor Dhona just up the hill from the Aetheryte.
3) Proceed to make 50 HQ items in the new recipe book (Darksteel Hooks for BSM, for example).
4) Trade those in, and congratulations, you now have your i70 Artisan's Tool).

On an upnote, I was able to hq a dodore belt (the ilvl 55 one) with a fully melded leatherworker with the artisan's glasses but no ilvl 70 tool.

SE has made crafting a materia meld requirement to do the harder recipes. Plus there are 2 master books now, which required to HQ some really expensive items to be able to craft the new items been in the game. Crafting is not a walk in the park anymore if you want to be able to craft the new items which are selling pretty high currently.

That is a pretty good resource for crafting 3 star.

I went after an augmented monk shirt (3 star craft) last night after getting my ilvl 70 tool. I successfully crafted it, but even with all HQ items (saurian skin and the shirt, you cant hq the demimateria) I only had 14% quality so it was a normal quality, but I figure most people are buying it for glamou anyway, so they might appreciate that mine is up for only half the cost as an HQ version. But I spent most of the craft using ingenuity 2 and careful synthesis II and it wasnt moving up as fast as I would like. I then discovered that for these kinds of crafts, it is more important than ever to use the lvl 43 armorer skill Piece by Piece, which ups your progress by 1/3. For these 3 star crafts, 1/3 is a significant amount of CP.

I always find myself disappointed with Piece by Piece. For the first progress jump it's fine, but after that it's pointless. Personally I've had better luck with a Steady Hand II/Ingenuity/Rapid Synthesis combo to get the progress up but it can still take 60+ durability to finish a 3 star item.

I'll have to try that.
