whats the difference between "mastercraft demimateria" and something with a more specific name like "master carpenter: demimateria"

If theyre both the same thing and you need 3 per tool then could I lets say get 6 master carpenter: demimateria and use 3 on carpenter tool and the other 3 on blacksmith tool, or would I need 3 master carpenter: demimateria AND 3 master blacksmith: demimateria?

Lastly why do people say mastercraft demimateria are hard to get if you only need 5 field craft demimateria I and 5 battle craft demimateria 1 for each mastercraft demimateria? considering the field and battle craft demimateria's tier number I would think theyre relatively easy to get?

The craft specific is master books that give you recipes. Mastercraft demimateria is something that can only be obtained by desynthing ilvl70 crafting gear.

so then "master carpenter: demimateria" isnt a demimateria, but instead is a recipe book?

Yes. You purchase it with 5 Battle and 5 Field demimateria.

Then use it, and you learn new recipes for that class it's "Master" category.
i.e. using the "Master Goldsmith: Demimateria" book gave me 30 Master-rank Goldsmithing recipes.

The reason its called that way is most likely because 95% of the recipes you learn require Demimateria in their ingredients.

I's are easy to get. In order to get II's you need to desynth one star recipes and in order to get III's you need to desynth two star recipes or high level dungeon gear. This can be pretty costly considering you probably won't get back everything you put into it.

Battlecraft III aren't too bad, despite needing gear 70 and above. The best way to go about it beside lotting and finger crossing for accessory drops from the Expert-tier dungeons (and former Expert-tier Brayflox, Halatali, and Amdapor) is to do some Frontlines. Two go-throughs should get you enough Wolf Marks for an i70 accessory from the PvP gear vendors. Plus you get to enjoy some fun PvP while you're at it, and 50 Myth per go of it isn't bad either.

Fieldcraft III and Mastercraft take a little more work, though. Your best option is to make a bajillion Artisan Spectacles, and the best way to go about that efficiently is to make Spicy Tomato Relish, 10 for each pair. Most you'll need if you're well-melded and have the Culinary artisan tool is an HQ tomato, and that should give you a good 90% odds on HQing the relish.

(Of course this is all assuming you are leveling Goldsmith as your primary desynthesis class, which I believe most people are due to its material efficiency.)

Some nice suggestions, thank you. I hadn't thought about farming Frontlines for those accessories.

Right now I'm at kind of a tricky point in that I'm not getting much experience from desynthing 1 star recipes (i55) but I don't have very good odds at desynthing the darksteel jewelry I have. Ideally I think I need to desynth some of the i60 jewelry, but I didn't keep any on me so it looks like I may have to farm some of the level 50 roulettes a bit.

3 questions of my own:

1) Is clear demimateria used for anything?
2) Does mastercraft materia only come from the artisan gear (spectacles/tools)? And isn't that kind of skewed towards certain jobs more than others?
3) How is culinarian at desynthing? It seems to me like it would be a lot cheaper to desynth 2 and 3 star foods than it would be any other craft's recipes... can you still get fieldcraft or battlecraft III demimateria from doing so?

1) Clear Demimateria is used only for selling, it has no known recipes and the tooltip displays that it's "Exchangable for gil" only. So sell it to a npc.

2) All ilvl70 crafting gear has a chance to give it. Sadly, only the tools and the glasses right now are ilvl70 gear. And out of those tools, most are blacksmithing while the glasses are goldsmithing. So there's nothing really you can do about it :/

3) Culinarian is... interesting. You cannot desynth food (i mean, duh, getting fresh ingredients from something you cooked/chopped/boiled?), but you can desynth all matter of Fish for Fine Sand (95% of the time), Pigments and Water Shards. With the occasional poison flash or paralysis flask from a nasty fish. Nothing truly game-changing, but it's nice to not have the useless fish you were gonna toss from fishing go to waste i suppose. Cheap water shards this way atleast.

Interesting to note that desynthing some of the ilvl 70 2 star fish (the Big Fishing ones) will sometimes yield rare swimwear.

Yea, aside from the usual sand, pigments & shards/crystals many fish can desynth into some item. The new bikini gear^, lures, jewelry, crafting mats, ventures, dark matter, clear demimateria, etc. So far it doesn't look like fisher/culinarian can get the fieldcraft & mastercraft demimateria for the new tools though.

Some fish will give another type of shard/crystal along with the water.

I did notice 1 finished meal that can be desynthed, crowned pie.

Currently no use, but they might add in a recipe for it, or allow you to convert 5 into a random demimateria like they do with materia now, so I'm putting mine away for now.

That's kind of been my thought process as well, so I've held on to mine.

Yes, buy these up, I GUARANTEE return in 2.4 or a later patch of 2.3. I speculate that you will be able to "fill these" clear materia with something, and their value will skyrocket.
