Which single player FF game is most similar to XIV lorewise?Follow

I haven't played all of the single player FFs, but out of the ones I have played, I would say XIV has quite a few parallels with VI:

-The main enemy of both games is an empire that makes heavy use of Magitek machinery

-Both games feature classic FF spells and abilities, yet their classes are not iconic Jobs (FFXIV technically has Job classes, but lorewise they are extremely rare and are mostly just an extension of their base class)

-Both games have a "Cataclysm" that happens at some point in the story

-Both games have a "War of the Magi" that happened in the past. As a result, Job classes in XIV are virtually extinct and thought to be the stuff of legend, much like magic users in VI

-The Returners and Scions are both organizations of several people that share a common goal and are the main protagonists

-Both games are much darker in setting than is normal for the FF series

-And finally, I've always felt the Player Character has a number of things in common with Terra Branford (especially if you play as a Summoner): For instance the Echo has some similarities with Terra's Esper half, and both characters are even used as a "trump card" against the Empire because of their unique powers

I'd say Final Fantasy III more than anything. Crystal Tower, Onion Knights, the design of the monsters, heavy focus on Crystals. Etc...

Although I'll agree that there are a lot of art influences and similar characters from the FFVI storyline, i like that the game draws influence from virtually every FF game. In addition to FFVI, the points you noted are also present in many different FF games as well

Although "Magitek" is a term specific to FFVI, other FF titles that have an evil empire with advanced technology as the main villain include 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11(RotZ), 12, 13

A similar use of obscured job types is also a feature in 2, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13.

I may be fuzzy on the specifics, but major events that change the map also occur in 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 13.

I think every single FF game takes place several years after a major war.

2 had the Wild Rose Rebellion, 7 had Avalanche

Just my opinion, but I find most of the games to have a fairly dark story.

Other things worth mentioning are the designs of the Garlean Empire are heavily influences by the Judges of Ivalice (featured in FFTA, FFTA2, and FFXII) And the races of Eorzea, and large portion of the bestiary are directly taken from XI. Not to mention the Crystal Tower from FF3. Onion knights are also a common theme mentioned in many different FF titles.

Not to mention the named characters taken directly out of XIII (Lightning) and XI (Shantotto) that have appeared in Eorzea.

X has white and black magic. And I haven't played XII, but I've read that it does have a Job system with its Licenses and Zodiac.

I was referring more to the lore behind the abilities, for instance Lulu could qualify as a Black Mage, but Terra technically is not a Red Mage because White and Black magic don't exist in that game, it's just lumped together.

Gonna have to agree with VI.

They didn't stop Kefka. We didn't stop Bahamut.

With the exception of maybe VIII, XIV is the only FF I have played where I very much felt that a strong concerted effort was made to remind players that the protagonists are anti-heroes at best, as brutal if not more so than their enemies (though I've heard XI and Tactics were much the same). Throughout the whole story your feet are never on solid ground and you find yourself questioning your closest allies as much as you do your enemies.

I would say the only games I have played which are darker in this regard are Skyrim and WoW (Cataclysm and Mists).

Hard to say with trying to throw FF elements in a non FF game, but if I had to guess from the obvious...FFIII and FFVI, in terms of ARR at least. In terms of 1.23 storyline, it was closer to FFIX and FFVII since Darnus just wanted to see the world burn and felt like something was 'taken' from her.
