At the following time, in order to accompany Patch 2.4, we will be performing maintenance on all Worlds. During this period, FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn will be unavailable.

Not only will Patch 2.4 implement the addition of the new Rogue class and the new Ninja job, but also a large increase to the number of plots of housing land. Accordingly, data-handling capacity will need to be increased, and for this reason, we will be conducting database optimization with this maintenance in order to aid in load reduction and increase data processing speed.

Database optimization will require time. In addition, because these are vital servers that house our players’ precious data, extra care and precaution must be taken. As a result, this will be a prolonged maintenance lasting 24 hours. We ask for your patience and cooperation during this process, and apologize for any inconvenience.

* The World Transfer Service will be suspended 15 minutes before maintenance begins, and will be unavailable until maintenance has ended.

[Date & Time]
Oct. 27, 2014 12:00 a.m. to Oct. 28, 2014 12:00 a.m. (PDT)

* The completion time may be subject to change.

[Affected Service]
- FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn

Wow, that's quite a maintenance period.

Every major patch iteration since 2.1 has been a day-long. Why do people continue to be shocked by this?

"Database Optimization"

The nerd in me is wondering exactly what they mean by this and how they plan to approach it. Like, are they using a standard relational database, or something weirder like Hadoop?

Well it's possible I didn't notice. It's possible I wasn't playing the game during a patch transition. It's possible I didn't remember.

Also.. shocked? No, I'm not "shocked." Shock would imply that this information has stunned me into inaction, however briefly. It didn't do that, so I am not shocked.

From my...uh...not so ...digging around, I know for sure it's not relational xD.

The database optimization is most likely because they are doubling the amount of housing wards.

But, secretly, we all know it's because Ninjas are hard to contain. Smiley: schooled

Hadoop then, or something exotic like it. One of the things Hadoop does for large scale data distribution is control just what server rack/cluster each chunk of data is stored on. If they're doubling the housing wards, and they were stored on Rack C with oh, I dunno, chocobo data, then as part of the "optimization" they'd want to shift the chocobo data off to another server cluster and put the housing data on that same cluster instead.

That explanation makes sense, considering they had to toss a bunch of extra servers in a hurry at launch and they may not have been able to properly plan for future growth.

Yeah when I was setting up my own little 'test server' for science I noticed that it certainly wasn't handling data traditionally compared to 1.0, so at least on the backend, they have that going for them. It is more than likely Hadoop though as I noticed MANY companies in general are recuriting for people who know how to handle that.

At least they were wise enough to go with that. Hopefully there's no hiccups like the beta (biggest hint) where people were logging into their accounts yet picking up other people's characters lol.

2.3 was nowhere near 24 hours.

I stand corrected.

Why does it seem the norm to me? Which patches did we have that were day-long?

I think I remember 2.1 being 24 hours long. It had to do with the housing systems back then too. I don't see why 2.2 or 2.3 would've been 24 hours long.

EDIT: Actually 2.2 was longer than usual since they were doing changes to the instance servers. Only 2.3 hasn't done anything to the backbone servers which is why the maintenance wasn't that long.
