No base class, eh? I wonder if that's the direction that they plan to go in the future with (most?) new jobs.

He did state that at some point he'll add jobs without the need or want to add classes - even adding jobs through a job+job combination.

It opens up some cool possibilities for future jobs, especially as DRK is using a different weapon. It's like they're bypassing the armory system altogether.. which is a thing I'm fine with.

Sigh, we need a tank yesterday, not months from now. On Tuesday do you plan on doing ST for endless drops? Our tanks will be off somewhere getting ninja.

Want to use the Duty Finder and not get that 3 count penalty? Forget it, tanks are in short supply already (21%), the lock out penalty again.

The question is: how long of a wait now for tanks come Tuesday? Maybe we have a server wide protest and lock ourselves out that day to show the unfairness, of punishing us when SE knows there's a tank issue today, which will be worse in the coming days.

Made the mistake of looking at official forums:

People are justifying that DRK is a tank because the original FF (Final Fantasy 1, for the Famicom) it was a tank.

I must be old because I could have sworn Dark Knight didn't exist in Final Fantasy 1. Damn memory must be failing me! >___> good lord the lengths people will go to say Yoshida does FF "better" lol.

You're right. The job in FF1 was Knight (naito) which is Paladin in subsequent games.

I don't think there were any dark knights until FF3? They've never been tanks. There's no reason they can't BE a tank, they just never have been.

I don't think you understand the penalty. The way I interpret it, if you queue for a duty, it pops, but you don't click the accept button (or whatever) before the timer runs out because you're AFK/not paying attention/whatever, that's strike 1. If it happens 3 times, you get a penalty. The penalty has nothing to do with tank availability since, even if there are no tanks, the duty won't pop in the first place. You don't get a penalty for registering for a duty and sitting there without a tank.

And quite frankly, this is 100% welcome as far as I'm concerned. I'm so sick of having to sit through multiple duty finder pops because the DPS (who always complains about how long it takes to pop) is AFK.

It is a tank class? I WILL TAKE IT!

Never really was a huge fan of DRK in 11, but I am happy to see another tank class. I have to completely agree with Grandmomma in that we need this tank now, not months from now. The que for DPS's are usually 'more than 30 minutes' and que's for any tank is damn near instant. I am usually not one to bash SE for their choices in managing their game but even this one escapes me. Why not give us a tank job now and a dps job later?

If it makes you feel better, I am one tank that has no interest in leveling rogue or ninja. However, i already have both tank classes leveled due to this very fact that tank are in such high demand. If they would release drk along with nin then i'd be right there in the DF helping to cut down the que times for dps.

There will be an abundance of them on release helping out dungeon queues, but it'll wear off. Most people don't want to handle the responsibility of being tank which is why it's so hard to find them half the time.

Can you honestly blame em though when you have the derpgoons and healers who don't know how to cure?

Normally I don't agree with you on many things, but yeah, that is silly. Dark Knight's first appearance was in FFII (the player character Leon). In FFIII, Dark Knight was a job you could unlock during your adventure, and in the original NES they (oddly enough) used low level White Magic.

Then of course you have FFIV (go go Cecil), FFT (I would kill for a FFT-style DRK in FFXIV, and FFT-style SAM for that matter), X-2, XI, and Lightning Returns: FFXIII.

Here's the FF Wiki's page on Dark Knight if anyone wants more history/background/appearances on the job.

Also, I don't see why DRK getting the tank role suddenly means it can't bring the pain as well. They can still have their "sacrifice HP to deal the 1337 damage" schtick if SE wants them to. Also, isn't WAR know for putting out some very good DPS when they're not focused on tanking? There's no reason why DRK can't do the same. One more thing. I miss the days when tank actually meant "high HP, Strength, and Defense" and not only took the hits like a champ, but returned them in full force as well. The MMORPG's definition of tank these days kinda irks me in that regard.

Addendum: The OF reminds me of the time when Scholar was revealed to be a fairy-controlling healer. "WTF SE why can't they nuke, you're ruining an iconic class (nevermind the fact that SCH hasn't even appeared that often in FF as it is), why isn't it like XI?!"

I'm not sure why DRK being a tank surprises anybody.

Anyone who played XI for any decent length of time probably knew at least one DRK that excelled at ripping hate and getting his face beat in. That's basically what a tank does, no?

That's when the dragoon is healing.

I specifically saved a tank class for this. So I'll be out there grinding paladin to 50 while everyone else is playing Naruto.

I'll probably do rogue/nin when DRK comes out then.

Very cool! May need to level this, although I'm still very happy as a paladin.

Technically we don't need another tank class. We need people to play tank. It will help at first when it's new, but it will die down again eventually. Since the census stated tanks were about 20ish % of the population, that means most of you need to start playin tank. The reason we have a tank shotage is because everyone is waiting for someone else to do it. Stop complaining and level war or pld. Thats what I did and i never had to wait for que again. Do i prefer to play as a dps? Yes. But i'm not going to complain about a shortage of tanks when I have the option to become one.

Most players don't choose their job based on demand, they choose it based on the appeal. What makes you think DRK's appeal is merely temporary? I think there's great appeal in what was shown which will make many people choose DRK over other jobs. Personally I find the DRK much cooler than WAR at least concept-wise.
