The only credit I'll give Yoshida is the fact he says he will not make jobs/classes different for the sake of it and "Final Fantasy" comes first - When you think Healer and you look at FF, or really most JRPGs, what do you think of? So while Yoshi does butcher FF things when it comes to ARR at least he keeps the themes correct for the most part.

Yeah, you're better off playing a western MMO, which tend to go against the archetypes for the sake of it.

Yeah because there are no healing/support classes in the FF series outside of robe wearing wizards. Give me a break. A western MMO? What Yoshida has done with ARR is copy all other western MMOs, make it even more carebear and slap a FF label on it. Now I am not saying it is a bad thing (albeit not what I wanted), but I won't be getting anything different by going to any of the ones he drew, lets call it "inspiration", from either.

Stepping back in conversation a step.

We just barely got Ninja, and it came with the class Rogue. The base Classes we have currently are very intrinsic to the story-lines of the game, so I don't think these classes as we see are going anywhere. Could be wrong, willing to be wrong. But I don't see it.

http://youtu.be/mm78w8szkbQ?t=43m19s

What confuses me is that they talk about classes/jobs covering two roles, which, honestly does not currently happen with our current class/job system. A gladiator/paladin is a tank, a Lancer/Dragoon is DPS, they really don't deviate away from these roles enough to consider it meeting the goals they're listing out. So, how would a straight-job system fit this bill?

There's still room for the base Classes having secondary jobs like Arcanist. Whether they reneg on that, keep Arcanist as unique in and of itself, or provide secondary Jobs for each of the current class system, all are matters still left to be seen. But I don't feel like the base classes that currently exist are going away. There's no point in retconning all the story that's been provided by them.

Lets see.

There is precedent for a more fantastical playable race (VI, IX, X) However out of 14 titles out, such instances are in the minority.

I'd hazard a guess that these issues are more logistical. Largely altered races means largely altered modeling and texturing issues across the board. Most easily noted of this is the tattoo/face paint matters. Simply put, Face Paint is generally universal across the board and any heavy fantastical races are going to run into issues in implementation. Considering that they just recently added Face Paint as to some of the holiday rewards this last Harvestmoon, that can raise some issues.

I question the logic equating Au'Ra to Roegadyn, at all. They're clearly Elezen in design styles, which makes sense considering the lore. Also, were do Rody's don't have a tail anymore (only as Galka in FFXI never in FFXIV), nor have they ever had horns or scale patches. Take those away, you're looking at an bulky Elezen for males, a petite Elezen for females as far as the Au'Ra is concerned.

It does make sense to me that a hybrid race would look derivative. But there is enough here to excite a number of the base (as evidence by the outspoken positive opinions on the OF ) Of course, this style of race creation does not appeal to everyone. But given the format of the game, I don't feel as if we'll see anything along the lines of a race with a drastically inhuman face.

Some lightly visible scales wouldn't have been bad though.

You raise a valid point about the face paint thing, but it wouldn't totally be that bad if they just nixed the option for the inhuman race, sidestepping that issue altogether?

The body they can sort of work with here, like for the armor and stuff. That can be humanoid. If the feet are different, they can just make it so feet pieces don't appear on the race.

It's a trade-off for implementation. I think it could work.

There are some lightly visible scales along the neck, jawline, and shoulders, if you look closely. I imagine they're hiding in more places once you get them into small clothes.

A tall humanoid race depicted with horns, "off" skin tones like red/gray, that determined look on their faces and yet still perfectly groomed and styled hair options. I can't get over how much the new race reminds me of Tera's Castanic.

It's not new, but how many MMOs, main stream or obscure, let you play as them compared to them being an enemy, boss, npc or artwork character? Very few 'demon/devil' races are selectable in MMOs lol.

I think the women are surprisingly well designed. Not a lot of changes opposed to a hyur, but still diffirent. They look very femine, i can imagine a lot of people want to play them. The males on the other hand just dont appeal to me. Outside of the whole "It's a hyur with horns glued unto it", it just looks... kinda bad. Maybe for the hardcore "evil" roleplayers who want something diffirent, but i just dont see myself enjoying that. I wonder how many players are going to seriously debate changing to the new race.

Probably not many. Since Tera's been brought up, I never really saw many male Castanics. Male power fantasy tends to evoke more the image of the hulking brute, and that certainly gets manifested often enough in other forms of gaming or even more directly here with the Roe. I imagine females would be more likely to play the Au Ra, though much for the same reason guys flock to the female Mi'qote and such. Sex sells, even if I wouldn't be so quick to say SE is overt about it.

Unfortunately, that translates to more beastly or "ugly" races being less likely to see the light of day. And from the dev manpower end, it probably isn't seen as cost efficient to spend so many resources on something less than 5% of the player base may utilize, even if we may more keenly identify them as clones of another race with slight skeletal/texture mods. Things like this also extend into unique animations. Using Tera again, I can't ever recall seeing a female Baraka PC. Or if I did, I confused it for a male. x.x

Human characters aren't the only..no. But for the grand majority of FF games, especially the numbered "main entries" human types are almost always the main characters. Very few exceptions, and very few "beastly" designs. The problem is, the "beast" styles tend to gravitate to the Ivalice games, which Yoshida said he didn't want people to think XIV/ARR is linked to Ivalice. The ones outside of that are in the 'obscure' titles like Crystal Chronicles

Also, it's the same facial structure as Miqote because AS OF NOW, they're basically mannequins of a Miqote (Yugiri), and in order to share the same animations the model has to actually be the same. However since both are technically "beast" races, it's obvious they'd have a similar design from a model standpoint. But after all, most MMOs forgo the "pure beast" type because if you hadn't notice, the ones that do actually have them, not all of them actually has 'paperdolling", because it's a lot more work to get the armors and such designed for them. So while some MMOs have a proper one (like WoW's minmalistic approach) a lot do not. This is Yoshida's main point against it.

Also the main reason we wouldn't have Gria for example..especially with this game's 1997 era Clipping.

I understand that most of the games take place from the human point of view with mostly human party members, but I don't get how that applies to a MMO where the whole point is you kind of deciding who the hero gets to be this time. We've given you a bunch of spikey haired teenagers but now you can be a little bobblehead Tarutaru hero if you want.

in regards to your second part basically saying "but this way was easier", well.. They shouldn't have advertised or added a new race then.

and not the current team's fault but like I said, the Galka -> Roegadyn, Tarutaru -> Lalafell, Mithra -> Miqote transitions already made them much more human. Pretty much every race in FFXIV could very reasonably just be a human in costume (Lalafell being little toddlers) so it just sucks that they're adding another race that's just another human but with different ears.

and obviously I don't know anything about making games and I know that FFXIV is on a totally different level graphically, but aside from WoW, there is cheap Chinese and Korean free MMORPGs which add beast races. Here's a random MMORPG which has bears and mouse and lizard and frog races. http://img5.178.com/chinagame/201203/126470502710/126470954713.jpg

Disclaimer: The following is a genuine inquiriy towards understanding and is not intended to slight in any way. I've simply reached the point where I am genuinely stumped and am admittedly incapable of making an attempt at approximating a viewpoint.

Hio, I have to ask, what keeps you in part of the FFXIV community here? Do you play? It's difficult to know due to your tone concerning it.

I ask because not only have I not seen a single post that does not impose negative connotations towards the game, I have in fact see you make slights at FFXIV in other forms, namely FFXI's forums.

I have a compulsion to at least attempt to understand the viewpoints of people around me (My girlfriend calls me an Altruist and that this is a flaw of such people, though I hardly believe her.) For the life of me I can't see beyond the base assumption that you have a profound grudge against FFXIV in particular, to the point that you are compelled to participate in the forums in order to express this as cleanly and succinctly, be it as a form of catharsis or in perhaps aims to garner more to your viewpoint and change the course of the game.

However, none of these assumptions make sense to me logically. In my distaste of FFXI due to it's core design mechanics that I view to be heavily flawed, I do not feel the desire to express so in FFXI's forums. In fact, I find such expressions to be a wasted effort even when presented respectfully and logically.

So I am feeling like I am missing something here. If you are playing, yet so upset with the game, what are the redeeming factors to it keep you here? If you are not, what's keeping you as part of the community here? It feels like a personal failing on my part that after so long associating with you on these forums that I do not have even a faint grasp of your motivations here, and I do not wish to remain simply reactionary to the surface level of your commentary.

Would you do me a favor and clue me in? I'd appreciate it. I'd much rather hear it straight from you than to presume or simply conform to someone else's presumptions.

Didn't say beast races were unusual. Between moogles, werewolves, espers, and half the ensemble cast of FF9, there are plenty of beast races present in FF games. I was talking about playable characters, which I thought I'd made pretty clear.

Yeah it's pretty obvious you didn't understand what I was talking about. Actually if you look at my earlier post, you'll see that I think the Au Ra could have been made MORE (not less) beastly since most of the races already look like humans in costume.

The point of documenting playable non-humans from main series FF games was to show how unusual that is though. The MMOs lean a little more towards racial diversity, but not by a ton.

I'll just be honest about it - It's "negative" because I won't gush about it or say only positive things about it, especially when I can see the fact while Yoshida decided to "play it safe" and pander to people who never even touched MMOs (he does kind of say it a lot) so while he wanted to stick to the standard, it's easy to see where his direction fails in terms of design. Is it a success? Sure, all MMOs that "followed in WoW's footsteps" are a success because it's familiar. However a lot of borrowed features and concepts weren't even done properly, so I definitely won't sit and pretend they did "amazing" in terms of general design.

In contrast to 1.x? Sure, it's a huge step forward in some areas and large steps backwards in others, which again, he stated he did so in order to "not confuse new players." I don't look at it in contrast to 1.x or even XI when it comes to certain things, especially from a lore standpoint because they use the excuse of "because lore!" then proceed to pull a 180 on it and do it anyway. Considering I liked 1.x far more, the only reason I stick with this game aside friends and FC is because some things he says, which will probably end up false or switched as usual, seem they'll move back towards their "own" design eventually and only truly wanted to play it safe for 2.x. (Since it's a relaunch that's understandable.)

I don't hold grudges, specially against a game - I just won't sing its praises when quite honestly, other games do certain features better. That's why I reference PSO2 a lot, while GW2 "pushed" the "FATE" system, PSO2's Emergency quests (that aren't scheduled) are truly what "FATEs" should have been, rather than something to replace overworld grinding with an awkward stepchild version of overworld grinding, it's more of an actual Event that, while sometimes repeats, are truly random and sometimes completely change how you go about an instance. I asked this question before and a lot of people gave the same answer: Would you TRULY enjoy ARR, as a game itself, if all of your friends and FC members left? Would it still be as enjoyable? Is the game design enough to keep you invested even though other MMOs did the same features better? A lot of people basically said they'd quit because the game honestly is pretty dull in design because it tried too much to play it safe to the point they no longer wanted to take risks, which is what this genre was always about and still should be about, which is why TERA got the praise it did even though 99% of it was **** and "standard", it at least took a risk with archetypes and the battle system..tried something different. People say: "1.0 was a risk and look at that!"

1.0 was never realized. Period. The same logic is like saying "Well, I played the demo of this game and it's unfinished, so it's crappy!" Yeah, it's funny how unfinished games being pushed out can end up terrible. It's also funny how a lot of things ARR get praised for were purely because it already existed due to 1.0-1.23, a lot of which up until 1.20/1.21 were concepts Tanaka started and had planned out. The main issue were being on an engine that didn't support MMOs, when SE already knew better because they had to create their own engine for XI as they didn't license a 3rd party one.

Quote:
So I am feeling like I am missing something here. If you are playing, yet so upset with the game, what are the redeeming factors to it keep you here?

Like many, friends I play with. Since I already was playing from 1.0 through 1.23, it was actually something different in the flood of ****** MMOs that "tried to bank on WoW", SE has the talent to do so much more which is why 2.0 was looking amazingly like a better version of 1.23, what we technically were promised. We got a "better" version...by scaling back, playing it safe and resembling as little of a unique MMO as possible. Considering I have to translate and keep up with info for friends, I take an interest in how Yoshida says overhauls of some kind are coming which interest me because it seems like they're going to try to move more towards actually putting some creativity into what they're doing. Which is why I praise XI, because despite the hate for it or the fact it's "old school", you can't deny you can tell a lot of creativity went into the design of the game, especially during its peak when almost no other MMO were doing certain style of content or even story progression like it was. It felt like they took a FF game and gave it online elements using EQ as a base. XIV/1.x felt exactly the same even with its problems. ARR just felt...for the lack of a better word, shat out to appease the masses, which is fine, it worked for them.

Quote:
Would you do me a favor and clue me in? I'd appreciate it. I'd much rather hear it straight from you than to presume or simply conform to someone else's presumptions.

No one truly knows my likes/dislikes unless someone actually knows me - This is why people can say I'm "negative" or make their assumptions all they want, fine by me. I'm not one to stay silent or beat around the bush. I won't flatout assault someone, but I also won't kid myself and find something "good" or "great" or "amazing" when it truly isn't. This is why I never say XI is a perfect game, every game has faults, but I can see far more good that they did with it and wanted to do with it than I can see the "fails" whereas on the flipside, I see far more fails with ARR than I do the positives because what they wanted to do with it (after throwing out 1.x completely aside assets) they didn't even fully do a good job at it because the MMOs they pulled from..still does it better..hell even recent updates they do it even better than before, so it still feels like ARR has catching up to do to even get on that basic level. The systems are there..but it feels shallow. Some content is like, they did their best for it..but did certain changes for the sake of...just..changing it. Like making the overworld useless, which they seem to be changing for the expansion.

So I'm neither for nor against anything, however I'll be straight up honest and people will disagree, which is no skin off my back, people can say I'm "wrong" and try to force me to concede, cool, do your thing - Not going to change that I don't see the creativity that I KNOW square is capable of being shown in ARR yet. Music/Graphics..cool, Square is known for that..they're also known for not simply "doing the norm" or else most of their games wouldn't have gotten the praises they did.

Like this race subject (classes I won't even go into because it's a far cry from what they could truly do.) Those disappointed with the lack of full bestial race, too bad so sad honestly, when you think of the lore..it truly doesn't make sense, it would be nice..but considering all the changes they did simply for the sake of "ease of development", lore aside...it won't work simply because they scaled models down and gave us "universal bones" based around Hyur Male for easier development and to implemenet Male Miqote and Female Roegadyn. They removed belts for "better designs" when some armors are more pixilated up close than even some XI ones, so it's not that I'm "negative" about it, it's simply...they already gave us plenty of excuses during alpha/beta and early 2.0 as to why they did what they did, going against it now would seem like they did it for no reason in the end. This is why my clipping comment is what it is, XI nor many other recent MMOs have anywhere near as much clipping in some regards, it's to the point it feels like they simply don't care because when they turned us all into "ghosts", is when it truly started. Sure it helps with performance, but at the same time..it leads to more worrisome thoughts about the future than: "Oh look something new and pretty!", yeah..well what about the clipping?

So no..no grudges, I just can't look at away or past the faults, even when it comes to XI, but as said, while I praise XI, I already know all of its faults, some of which people just personally disliked and truly wasn't a fault with the core system compared to XIV where a lot of faults are simply due to design decisions to keep the MMO "kid friendly" for a lack of better term.

actually I've been misspeaking in saying that the race should have been a "beast race", I just mean that it could have been ANYTHING less generic. We already have races that look exactly like that. I guess it wouldn't necessarily have to be a beastial race but surely they could have done better than this?

By the way, just ignore the "Why are you even here if you hate it so much??" people. It's a classic meme used by fanboys of every game if you have a single complaint.

While that's probably true for other forums, it actually isn't really for Zam. People here tend to be a lot more open-minded about things, and we try to have civilized discussions.

That being said, this is a FAN site. So you should reasonably expect the prevailing opinion on any given game to be a favorable one, and should approach with that in mind.

Iass5, I've been around Hio enough to ask that question genuinely. I can disagree with someone and still see them as a person, unlike many people who argue online. Its fine to have differing viewpoints, that's what makes variety successful, and encourages inventiveness. I may not always agree with Hio's views, but I respect them. This was more out of concern for her own enjoyment as some of these posts were sounding bitter, but didn't fit with what I knew of the person.

Hio, thank you, I have a slightly better understanding of your perspective now. I do, on quite a few fronts, disagree with you, both in your opinions on the matter, and in the way you implemented.

It sounds to me that you would have much better preferred that Square Enix produce a niche product for the sake of identity than make a game with broad appeal by intimidating many of the classical, successful MMO tropes. And while I can accept that as opinion, I cannot logically concede that as fact.

This is a matter of values. Compare this dabate along the lines of perhaps a Kubric movie to that of a Michael bay movie. Kubric indeed crafted stunning works of art, but when it came to monetary value, one can't deny the financial successes of Michael Bay. (I'm more of a fan of Quentin Terientio myself). I don't' feel as if ARR quite sells out as hard, so much as tries to marry common MMO concepts with that of Square Enix's unique style and flaire, a process that I feel is still in its early stages.

I very much compare FFXIV:ARR to what FFXI had before Zilart, as best as one in NA who did not import can compare. I consiter ARR a hard reset and do not compare it to 1.0 mainly for the same exact reason you argue in defense of 1.0: It was never realized.

I would, however, not agree with the giving the credit of 1.23's successes to Tanaka and crew, in the least. The most lauded changes, Implementation of Jobs and the Darnus arc, were not, in fact, part of the original crew's design. Pieces of content like the original primal fight (Ifrit specifically.) and products like Hamlet Defense were. But Garuda and Moogle Mog both got retooled to the new system, Castrum Centri (United We Stand) Nael Darnus (To Kill a Raven) and his Hard Mode (Raven, Nevermore) were entirely Yoshida's and crew's ideas. There was much of 1.0 that could have been salvaged, IMO, but I do not regret the change to 2.0, even if I do wonder what could have been.

But it's ok to have differing opinions. However it feels like you find no enjoyment in the game by the sheer volume of criticism you have on the title. You even went so far as to blame the development problems in FFXI solely in FFXIV's lap. So I had to inquire why you stood around.

We stand at opposing viewpoints. Many of the things you acclaim FFXI for for its uniqueness, I feel is undermined by it's failings, or some of the mechanics, particularly how horizontal progression was managed, as well as the majority of the tanking concepts in FFXI to be major failings of the game. Not to mention the severe content gating. Not that FFXIV is not without its own gates, but thankfully they are fairly linear and are quick to be eased.

To me, FFXI was often a bloated affair, so much customization but little room for error in raids to explore such customization. They created a world with many possibilities then ironed them away with a obtuse grind that made all but the most effective methods useless. There were many good and bad points there, but the bad points there made the game progressively more unplayable to me to the point where I just... left. I'm content with it being a closed chapter in my gaming life. Anyways, I digress.

Quote:
I asked this question before and a lot of people gave the same answer: Would you TRULY enjoy ARR, as a game itself, if all of your friends and FC members left?

Strange that you asked that. I actually left my FC, and my server, to start fresh with ARR and to join the Roleplay community. I made new friends, that Linkshell fell apart. I wandered around a bit, and then found a good home with my current FC, who's leader ended up becoming my GF out of it. So... the answer to that question is yes from multiple fronts for me. In spite of all of its faults, FFXIV is appealing, relaxing rather than stressing, and the merger of my hobbies was a smart move on my part.

So you'll have to forgive me when I'm not in full agreement that friends alone would make it so your experience would be tolerable. True friends transcend games and will stick with you regardless if you switch hobbies, even if it's just talking. There's got to be at least some entertainment value for you here to be here, if you don't mind the assumption.

But thank you, I was in a rut with this matter and you helped me understand. I don't necessarily agree with your stance but I get where you're coming from. Hopefully as the game ages, it will do what FFXI did in some respects and evolve to become more in depth. As I recall, even FFXI vanilla was fairly bland and run-of-the-mill for the age. Let's hope FFXIV repeats history in a good way. Although it may still do the same for you as FFXI did for me. Hope that's not the case but it's still a possibility.
