Hi, I'm a long time XI player (quit because school*) and I messed around with my friend's XIV 1.0 account at launch, but don't really have other experience with XIV. I'm graduating in 12 weeks, and due to my wife not wanting to play XI with a husband character who's "already level a billion", we're taking up XIV once I get my cap 'n gown. She's going to play on PS4 and I'll play on PC. I'm just after information on what to do to get started in the best way possible, so I'm not too much of a noobcake on day 1. Is there a windower I should be using? Voice chat on PS4 I should take advantage of? My capstone project is a beast, so I don't really have tons of time to research this stuff in advance. I don't mind reading, I just know how easy it is to read a terrible guide without realizing so as a new player, and want to make sure I'm looking in the right places.

TL;DR - Former FFXI player starting up FFXIV 12 weeks from now. What do?

*Also, got my Aegis and quit shortly thereafter, you know the story

The game is pretty self-contained. No Windower or any other nonsense like that necessary. It's also pretty good about teaching you how to play it.

The one big thing I'd say though is that if you want to play together RIGHT AWAY, make sure you're starting in the same city (it's determined by starting class). It'll show you when you're picking your class which city you'll be in, but it can be easy to overlook. If you don't, then you'll both have to wait for level (I think) 15 before you get access to the other cities.

Yeah, level 15 is basically right. And I say that because access to airships (and thus to the other cities) is tied to progress with the main story line, and not directly to the level of your first class. In general, when people ask, "How do I get access to X?", the answer is to keep progressing with the main story line.

Once you hit level 10 with your first class and do the class quest that unlocks at that level, you'll be able to start switching to other classes, including crafting (called Disciples of the Hand) and HELM (called Disciples of the Land).

If you start with two different classes in the same city, you should be ok as long as you don't pick 2 DPS classes together. Group content mainly occurs in instanced dungeons, for which you can queue up to get placed into 4 man parties (and later 8 man parties, and 24 man alliances). For 4 man groups, the make up is always 1 tank, 1 healer and 2 DPS. People want to put up eye popping numbers, not tank. So tanks tend to be in shortage and thus get shorter queue times. DPS tend to be in abundance and suffer the worst queue times. So you and your wife both playing DPS classes together would be an aweful introduction. One of you as a tank and the other as the healer is probably ideal (so you can trust the person who has your back). But even a tank plus a DPS should be fine as far as seek times.

And get used to WAR being a tank, and not a DPS.

Welcome back, Zam poster whose name is familiar.

#1, join us in the Swarm on Lamia server. You sound like a perfect fit for our FC - lots of FFXI vets, mostly professionals who play casually. Lamia is a populated server, but not as overly crowded as some of the others that you can't even make characters on (looking at Balmung...)
