Opinions/ideas on alts?Follow

Lately I've been thinking about making a character on another server. My main has the storyline completed and a couple of classes geared, so there's no way I'm just going to sweep him to the side. Is anyone here juggling an alt?

Now that dungeons give more exp, it should be quicker to hit max level. My main reason for doing this is to see what the non-legacy servers are like, and...well, dammit, I've always wanted a Lalafell. Any opinions or suggestions are welcome.

I think alts should have a special purpose, since your main is usually going to be your generalist "do all the things!" character.

I have an alt for:
- Hanging out on another server where I already have some friends (Ultros) - but this rarely gets played
- A special purpose account which is undergoing the MSQ Challenge - get to 50 using only the main scenario quests, hunting logs, and class quests, and never repeating content more than once. (Basically, skipping all side quests.) This alt also doubles as my "antisocial alt" - he's not in a FC or a linkshell and has no friends.
- Running around as a Lala sometimes. Everyone needs a Lala alt.

Another major reason people have alts is for role play. Players on Balmung are serious alt-aholics and I know some role players who juggle four or five characters, doing the MSQ Challenge on them and only leveling outside of it when they go on RP adventures.

I'm juggling characters on different servers, and it's actually not bad to keep all the balls in the air.

Verdha on Lamia is my original character, in the FC with all my FFXI friends from the NoSephiroth Dynamis LS (Catwho, Illsaide, and so on), and is focussed on progression and fun stuff with the game itself.

Waenlona on Balmung is my RP character, in a heavy RP FC with Hyrist's multiple characters, and focussed on RP first and everything else second. I still find she progresses pretty fast.

Kekerana is a lalafell (because lalafell, right?) I've just created on Sargatanas to drop in one or two times a month to visit with the friends from my original Seraph FFXI social LS.

My week consists of "Verdha days" and "Waenlona days". Waenlona Days are chosen to fit around the FC's main RP schedule, while Verdha gets the other ones. A regular routine helps plan out activities for each of them and keeps them both in play without neglecting either. I only pop on Kekerana very occasionally, but it makes a great break.

It's much more interesting with alts for me, partly to experience the game in different ways (RP vs Progression), and different storylines (three characters, three starting cities), but also because I find I get into the characters in a very different way. Verdha is a career MNK with a WHM sideline, never could get the hang of SCH. Waenlona is a full time SCH, pretty darned good at it, but struggles on WHM and has no interest in DPS or Tanking. Verdha and Waenlona both are poor BLMs. Kekerana is a classic FFXI tarutaru BLM, a creepy looking guy with an attitude that loves to blow things up and figure out which side they're on later. And none of those differences in how I play the classes were a conscious choice -- I just find that on Waenlona, I play SCH better than anything else; on Verdha I can't get into the swing of SCH but WHM is fine and MNK is career, and only on Kekerana can I nuke effectively.

One catch is that Balmung is not open to new character creation, so I had to create on another world and transfer over. But it was well worth it.

Thanks for the input! This 2nd character would definitely be more for the social aspect of the game, as my main has always been about the gear treadmill. Also, my main is on Balmung--I guess alt fever is in the air there.

I made an alt on a EU server a few months back for kicks. Just to switch it up and play as a different race (made a female char this time too) really. Also did some jobs I hadn't on my main: SMN, BLM, SCH. Come Heavensward gonna roll Machinist and turn her into an AuRa, she's gonna be rad. Also fun just to relive a lot of the early aspects of the game that I had forgotten. It was surprisingly fast to get to 50 and go through all the start/preliminary stuff. Helps a lot that I knew exactly what to do/where to go, etc.

It would make sense as Balmung is the first and most successful RP server FFXIV has, and even then that's an unofficial title. So alts are going to be really common there.

I'm a completionist who is dedicated to my one character having literally every possible accomplishment, so having an alt would probably make me explode. Smiley: cry
