So apparently the voice acting in FFXIV is bad because "they sound like their british".

LOL thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. SO I say "So anyone who sounds british/english has a bad voice? Then James Bond has bad voice acting?" to which they reply "No, it just doesn't belong in a final fantasy game". So Im like "so anything that not what you want or goes against what you are used too = bad? That would be like saying Zelda Windwaker has bad graphics because is Cel Shaded and not an art style you like.... No the graphics arent bad you just dont like the art style.... those are not the same thing." To which they say "that analogy doesn't fit this conversation, there are plenty of art styles I hate but I would never say their graphics are bad because of it... but bad voice acting is bad voice acting"

Tell me... is it just me of does this guy need help?

I loved the new voice acting. It's leaps and bounds imo now.

All American/Canadian voice actors sound off to me, because very few people sound like what I hear every day (in Georgia.)

Heck, the only character in any modern game or cartoon that sounded remotely normal for me was Applejack from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and even her accent was a bizarre combination of Texas and Tennessee.

The only voice acting that really threw me off was Tataru, and that is ONLY because I switched back to English voice actors (from Japanese) for this expansion. It went from a tiny child voice to a woman in her mid-30s. The regional dialect of English wasn't even a factor for me. Honestly, I don't mind the new voice actors. They are much better than they were in 2.x.

Yeah Tataru and Merlweb(?) especially, were glaring changes in VA.

I just finished reading that some people think Dr Strange is a person of color. Not should be, but based on source material he always was. So, you know, take that.

while yes a lotta ppl dont like the new VAs however the person who claims the voice acting is bad isnt even that far in the game yet, hes only see the very first voice acted scene if you start in Uldah when you first meet the Sultana and shes sitting under the Sultan tree... apparently everything in that scene is "bad voice acting"

I love that Hilda has a recognizable Plymouth/mild Cornwall accent. That's where I'm from originally. Smiley: smile

In all honesty no acting is ever going to make 100% people happy and that my friend is fact. I found the voice acting much better this time around and still isn't perfect but unless SE spends the type of money to hire Hollywood stars who live on voice acting - its not going to happen. They have a set budget to stick to but I think they did well for an MMO that isn't exactly raking in millions of £££ every month in profit.

As for the "dumbest thing" I've heard far worse like the fact this game didn't bring any new content (even though you can list a lot of new things it did give us) may not of been new type of content but it still is new music, dungeons, jobs etc etc.

Still, I've heard far worse - usually from the stroppy teenagers who live at home with their Parents till they hit 40.

Two things...

1). I can't play Wind Waker because of its graphics style. I've tried, and it gives me migraines. I'm not saying that it is bad per se, but I've known a couple other people to say it does the same to them. When something like graphics style causes some people huge headaches, then there might be a problem with it.

2). I don't get where people are saying that FFXIV VAs sound "British". I don't have HW and I never got to see any of the new content (I tried getting back into XIV, but it is just 'meh'), but from what I do remember, the VAs sounded fine, even if they are articulated unusually well (which is a good thing, as I have APD).

I rather liked the VA in FFXIV; it is easy to understand, the accents are reasonable, and they do the job.

Normally, a lot of games that have VA, I find myself wishing they didn't as I'd rather read the text. XIV (along with Mass Effect) is one of the few that I didn't mind it. In Mass Effect, well what can I say? I always played as Fem!Shep. Anything Jennifer Hale says is music to one's ears.

EDIT: Let's not forget the Narrator from Bastion, too. That's like, one of the top 3 best things about Bastion.

The newer VAs apparently sound british or somewhereabouts. I don't play with the english option since I never liked the quality of ARR's, I liked some of the returning ones from 1.0 though..but I liked 1.0's much better.

I happen to like British.

Actually, even better, real cockney or maybe Australian "battler".

But I suppose I shouldn't be expecting a fantasy RPG to have everybody talking like they're from the land down under lol.

Yeah, like I didn't mind Yda and Paly's voice from 1.0, felt kinda fitting and iirc returned for 2.0 at least but I'm not sure. That's part of why people dislike it I assume, just doesn't feel overly fitting to the settings. Yeah it's hard to be "regional" in western VA, At least they put work into the Dragon speak so they didn't sound like Australian dragons or Scottish ones.

It's not that it's brittish voices. I like brittish people and their accents. It's that it doesnt fit the characters even slightly. And really, they feel like they're just reading it up. I've heard more spirited dialogue in an Uwe Boll movie...

I put them to japanese since i felt they put a little more feeling into the voices and they fit the characters more.

Still, it could be worse. Vanille from FFXIII comes to mind. Everytime that girl opened her mouth i wanted to scream and rip my ears off.

That's a normal reaction. It has nothing to do with her accent.

I've had Japanese voices on since I started playing so I can't speak to the English voicework beyond what I heard in the HW trailer. Most of what I heard there DID sound a little like talking bricks.. lacking personality. The Japanese voices don't have this problem. That being said, there are a few characters that I've always figured should have English accents, like Alphinaud and Y'shtola. I don't know if they actually do or not in the English track, but it did seem appropriate for them.

That's how I felt about Tidus in Final Fantasy X. His voice was super annoying and he was constantly whining. I have not felt that way about these characters.

That laugh scene. 'Nuff said.

That's a "grab the remote and mute it!" moment.

I didn't really like Tidus's voice much either, but I didn't hate it to THAT extent... except for that scene. Arrrgh. Now, the character's personality in general, I didn't like all that much. Young hotshot who thinks he's all that, but ends up making an idiot of himself 99% of the time and doesn't really get any better until way, way later in the game and even then, too little too late; the damage has already been done. And of course, like in a lot of later FFs, the clothing that they have these people wearing, esp the main protagonist, is a whole "who thought THAT up!?" deal. I miss the days when FF people wore normal clothing, lol.

As far as "English Voices never have emotion" .... sometimes Japanese VAs have too much emotion, like they're over-doing it or over-dramatizing it. That can be just as bad, if not worse sometimes, especially when it comes to cutey-cutey mousey young girly voices who are all squealing over the littlest little things in some animes. That gets on my nerves fast.
