Dark Knight QuestionFollow

so i havn't bought the game yet because i was wondering if its possible to dps as a dark knight, i understand they're only a tanking class? so this game doesn't have talent trees like WoW to spec into a role? the dark knight is the only class that really interests me

No talent trees.
Tanks are expected to DPS, thus 'stance dancing'.
You can't begin as a Dark Knight so you will go through a lengthy story set which requires you to level to 50 first to gain access to the area where Dark Knight is held.

yes i've read a bit about what you have to do to unlock them but i could never find any information on talent trees or if it was possible to dps as a dark knight, i hate tanking more than anything lol so my question was if i could focus entirely on dps i understand i'd not do as good as actual dps classes but as long as its decent dps and not pure **** i'd be fine

Hm....in certain situations you can focus as a DPS, but your defined role is Tank. So while you can kind of gear towards DPSing, you'll be expected to tank first and foremost. Once you get into certain content like primals, if you're off-tank you can be a pure DPS and only need to main tank if they go down, otherwise, at best, you'll stance dance but you can't forgo tanking completely sadly.

You will spend 99% of your time tanking if you roll a Dark Knight

Yeah, DRK got the magic defense tank slot, sitting in between WAR (the blood tank) and PLD (the pure mitigation tank.)

You're expected to DPS on your own in solo content, of course, but as BrokenFox said, 99% of the time DRK is the tank in group content.

Popular or not, I personally think if you only want to play Dark Knight and nothing else you should skip XIV and look for another MMO. One of the really neat features of XIV is that your character can be any class at any time just by changing what you have in your hand. There is a whole lot of content you're going to miss if you start with a mindset that you only want to experience one aspect of the game instead of the whole.
