The terrible state of FF14 RedditFollow

I was apparently banned last night from the subreddit for posting a guide for new players to ff14 as it broke the rule about "excessive" self promotion.

I've known this for a while, that the reddit is a joke and is truly only meant for people to post "Look how pretty my haircut is" topics, but I find this to be beyond reason.

Someones going to have to explain to me what the point of a game reddit is if you are not allowed to post guides of any sort for that game.

Most idiotic thing I've seen in a long time.

Their rules are pretty clear https://www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion

I put a guide for new players. My understanding is that the subreddit is to get people interested in the game, and so many people I know who have just started were lost in the beginnings of the game. Apparently that's not at all what it's for.

I think they get a lot fussier about original content that links to outside of Reddit.
#5REDACTED, Posted: Oct 01 2015 at 12:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'm currently in messages between two moderators. One saying and I quote "I agree that it may be a harsh assessment. I'll look into it and see what we can do. However, posting videos is generally frowned upon."

I get what they mean by "excessive", considering you've only been on zam for a few hours and you're already spamming up the place.

I wont be posting on reddit. Id still offer tips and guides for players on channels that are more open to using them.

I also thought you meant you weren't going to be posting HERE anymore, LOL. I was trying to think of something witty to say, but honestly words had escaped me, and that's rare.

Welcome to the show!

I was typing that on my phone lol So it came out wrong but yeah, I'm trying to find all the non-toxic communities for FF14 especially as we gear towards moving into Savage mode

Just FYI, some of us on this forum have been arguing with each other for years, so please don't mistake our familiarity with being toxic.

Also, while I'm an "admin," I regularly participate in conversations and debates. Feel free to disagree with me as strongly as you'd like. Pretty much anything goes here as long as things stay on topic and don't devolve into personal attacks/wildly inappropriate remarks/etc.

I consider toxicity to be when people choose to put down others because of their own achievements. unfortunately with how difficult endgame can be in ff14, that is far more prevalent than in other mmos atm

A lot of us are ex-hardcores who do more casual or midcore content rather than have a conniption over progression content. I just don't have the time or energy to play a game where I'm not having fun 90% of the time.

Thankfully, XIV's plethora of casual content is keeping me occupied even though I'm not touching Alexander Savage with a ten foot pole. I'm a major contributor to the screenshot community.

Reddit ffxiv never upvotes, btw. The community doesn't understand that a good comment deserves credit. They are definitely good for posting useful info as soon as things shake up (patches etc). But 99% of the time, its just there so that the super elite can show off their shiny new weapons to the super casuals, and the rest of the time its glamour and eorzea cafe posts, and screenshots of someone getting frozen with their underwear showing.

Yeah I raided hardcore in WoW for a long time, 6 days a week 6 or 7 hours a day. I don't have time for that anymore but back then I used to be big on contributions to sites like Elitist Jerks and forums for guides and tips etc.

I think I'd like to do some of that for this game seeing as the information out there is sparse and updated infrequently.

You probably would have been fine if you wrote out a guide and posted it to reddit. If you actually read the rules, they don't want you creating content(videos are included) and linking to that content through reddit. It is seen as self promotion because you're directing people to your youtube channel and though you might not have it setup, people are able to monetize their content.

I understand that you were trying to help people and it may not have been just to plug your youtube, but it's still a violation of their rules. Don't take it personally, just pay more attention to the rules and you'll be fine.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

Used to be a big Macro PvP Elyos for the early days of Aion before it went FTP. Nowadays I tend to look for more action-oriented games for my challenge. And only if I can conveniently play it.

Eventually the toxicity and inaccessability of the upper echelon of endgame in most MMOs has turned me off to the practice. I just don't have the interest level I used to - even though I still find myself trying to improve my performance or work with the trends from time to time.

So you're in good company here. We may bicker like old married couples, but we all understand we're good hearted people.

I dunno, so far I have met a lot of nice people on the ff14 reddit. As for self promoting over there, as long as you are posting and taking part of the community beyond your own guides/videos there doesn't seem to be any problems. This is pretty similar to a lot of sub-reddits to be honest.

I won't disagree though. A lot of screenshots, but there are also an equal number of question posts and decent discourse on the game. I'm new to this Zam community but I hope to find decent people here as well.

Elitism is in every game and in every community. I just learn to ignore it xD
