Just curious if most people are still running around as the new race. I haven't played since expa released.

I'm not sure "most" people were ever doing that.

There were a surge of Au'Ra but based on census data, most still like those ugly catgirls. So Au'Ra actually isn't as popular as you'd think. Seems Miqote and Hyur female is the most in surplus.

A lot of people switched over, then switched back after a month or so.

Au'ra gave me the height and build I wanted in a character without the goofy Elezen gait/run.

In a game where people only have one character, adding a new race doesn't mean a whole lot to existing players. Even with fantasias most people are too attached to their characters to change months or years later.

What's good about their character creator, you can essentially remake the same character from race to race. Of course, it probably limits the overall creativity, but at least good if you're attached to a certain look and want to change.

I haven't played in a good long time (since just before HW), so I didn't even know there was a new race. I google imaged it though, and I can kinda see why people might not like the aesthetic.

I would have loved to played a dragon-type race, but these people look like elves with a few sparse scales glued onto their skin and these weird horns that are oddly horizontal.

Now if you gave them a more draconian look to them, made their bodies covered in scales, and/or give them dragon-like faces (even if you didn't give them a full-on snout), I bet you'd see that pie chart change quite a bit, lol.

My personal beefs with what I've seen of the various google images:

1). The horns are really weird looking. I would have preferred if they were tilted upwards, kinda like a few of the draenei horns from WoW.
2). The sparse "glued-on" scales don't really make much sense. They should either have scales all over their bodies, or perhaps a hide-like lizard-type skin with some scale plates in major vital areas and these could be a wild variety of colors.
3). Did we really need another lean and lanky race? These are basically elves with a few scales and horns. IMO, make them about human-height, but more muscular in build. Kinda like a Roegadyn (sp?) but shorter, human-height.
4). Lack of a tail. Seriously, if you're going to do a dragon-type thing, you need a scaled tail. (nevermind, they do have them. finally seeing images now that show em)
5). They also needed spines/spikes going down their back and their tail that would show through armor. That woulda been awesome.

I think the main thing preventing "full beast" type races is aside system limitations with armors and such, the lore wouldn't make much sense. Au'Ra are demons but get mistaken for dragons..and given Ishgards theme, it makes sense they are the way they are.

They're actually more demon-inspired than they are dragon inspired; the original design art for the females was like the succubus monsters. Their personal mythologies make no mention of dragons. They do however face prejudice in Ishgard for having the dragon-like traits of scales and horns.

Actually, the official backstory in the character creation screen mentions a possible dragon-based background, but only to sow doubts about it. One example they give is that while their horns are dragon-like, an Au Ra can hear with their horns while dragons cannot.

The lore for XIV, yeah... but as far as armor goes, not if you did it right. XIV shows us that we can have tailed humanoids with no problems as far as armor.

You could easily do a lizard-ish type hide and still have armor on, as long as the torso was still humanoid.

As for the face, well... you could always make helmets always hidden if you wanted to do a snout-type face, or even semi-snout would still work with helmets.

I do understand the lore part, I was just more speaking of personal frustrations that none of these MMOs ever have any draconian-type races that I've seen, and personally I think that's a lot of missed opportunity for something truly different that no MMORPG that I know of has ever done.

And Au Ra are actually demons? Blah. That kinda ruins my want to even try one.

I agree. I'd love to see more variety in races rather than just different sizes and shapes of humans and elves. I think the original Everquest had some kind of draconian didn't it? GW2 has the Charr which is a pretty good step in that direction. Beyond being basically humanoid in shape so that the art team doesn't go on strike, I'd think you could make pretty much anything and it'd be fine. Just a matter of effort.

Actually... SE is pretty lazy when it comes to designs, so no I'm not going to agree that the designs can work out with full beast races.

Most helms now just pretty much clip through existing models for Au Ra, and Tails... well, Tails have had their problems with Armors for a while now. It's gotten to the point that certain armors just flat out override the tail when they think it's going to be too much of an issue.

So I don't think a truly beastly race would work out with how much added work it would be for the design team to implement.

There's also the issue of how rigid they are in the number of options and data usage each character race has. So creating a race heavily divergent from the others would probably mess with their idea of 'balancing'. Not entirely confident there.

Anyways, to be more polite about it. FFXIV has a very minimalist approach to new additions, especially races. Between lore and workload, I doubt we will see a beastrace. Au Ra might have actually been the last race addition, in fact. Not sure there. Not too happy about any of those factors, actually.

And that is where we come to a screeching halt, but I made my stance on that clear.

I'd have been happy with the Succubus version honestly.
