Damn you Filth, first file check and "Playonline Viewer has stopped working". They have all the expansions in 4 neat little files, you'd think they could throw the updates in one last file? The updates will be spaced out with enough time to keep these files up to date...

edit: Got to the download phase by using that"illegal" program...
Nevermind, that crashed too during the download phase. Good lord, it has to re-check all the files...this might not be happening.

Sorry, but it's Playonline so it's to be expected. Also worth noting(more to credit the XI team and not to call you out), they have been updating this game monthly for quite some time. Even if you had all the updated files you'd still have to go through file check on install.

Taking hours or possibly days to do something that should have taken minutes captures the essence of FFXI. Besides, it wouldn't be much of a welcome back if you didn't download and install, re-download and reinstall and then scour the internet for posts about the various issues that keep you from remembering why it was you said goodbye in the first place Smiley: glare

hah, very true. The file check I can live with, it takes about 5 minutes. The update download though, that's what's taking close to 6 hours. 4600 files remain...getting there. I'll just leave it on my storage drive this time around, that way if I ever get the itch it's easily accessible. I'm dreading setting everything up again too, the graphics, UI, macros....ahhhhhh

Maybe there is an upside to the development for XI stopping... perhaps they'll update those downloaded client files to include enough to minimize the POL download to a minimum.

Well I'm in, and man the music in this game always hits me! It's also impressive how well the game has held up over the years, considering it's been out since 2002. Things seem to be running smooth so far, so time to get some Rhapsodies done!

Also a thing to keep in mind with RoV - If you played previously and did some mission progress, you may have to complete a mission or two to get an NPC to show up. Like some people got stuck on WoTG and Adoulin progression based ones since Lilisette was captured or Arcelia wasn't met yet.

Been good so far, was about half way through ToAU and WotG when I last left. Managed to get half way through RoV before taking a break last night (5 hour play session!) haven't done that in ages. Going to consider switching from SAM to BST though as I read you can solo all of Adoulin on BST with trusts. BST was probably my most decked out job prior to leaving, so much of the PDT set should still be relevant.

What event?
I can not get FFXI to run on my laptop. My character does not show up but everything else is okl. I looked it up and it happened to allot of people with intel gpu's but you think this would worked out by now, I run dual graphics with ATI. But I tried everything.

I think the story in FFXIV is pretty good but I did like allot of FFXI story too but not all of it. I think what makes FFXI better is the missions during story did not just make you feel like a errand boy most of the time.

Fenrir's had about 500 players on during NA time and 1000 with JP time. So I'm assuming Asura would have a bit more.

Thanks

Wish the FFXI was free just for the end.

I wonder what needs to be completed to actually see the end of the story. Probably allot of back missions?

Cool. I've got characters on Bahamut and Odin as well, if anyone's on those servers.

Yep, 3 long chapters, mostly cutscenes though. They're actually really nice and were refreshing not disguising "go do my errands for me" that makes up a lot of XIV's at times.

It's nice that it makes you re-visit many areas you probably haven't seen in ages (kind of like the mini expansions), but far less mundane. Just make sure you pick up the home points as you go, along with the books that allow you to travel between them (their name eludes me for some reason...). It's taken me about 7 hours give or take to make it half way through the RoV missions, so it's definitely lengthy.

My best guess without knowing exactly what hardware you have is that you need a modified driver. Most laptops switch between the on board graphics and the discrete GPU.

The most common issue is that the laptop uses the on board graphics to handle POL. Not a problem on it's own, but when it tries to switch over to GPU once POL launches FFXI, it crashes or causes other graphical errors. Most manufacturers don't make it an option to force the GPU to handle everything(even if there is a checkbox for it) so you'd probably have to search for a modified driver to allow you to get around it.

You might check and see if there is any info related to your laptop's GPU regarding drivers that force the discreet GPU to handle everything. Driver setups don't take too long and you can always revert it.

Every time I get the urge to reinstall FFXI, I remember that I was level 76 when I quit. Just the thought of trying to level up to 99 and get a decent enough gear set to participate instantly turns me off of the idea. Though, I will admit, the event did bring back some rather fond memories.

Entry level gearing is a given. Since you'd probably want to run content that you haven't seen yet, you'd end up with at least enough gear to progress if you decided you're sticking around for a little while. The 'return' campaign is only going for another week so it's not like you'd be running endgame content unless you were planning on returning.

No more level uncapping or major updates means we're back to the old horizontal progression style XI. The game is far more accessible to solo and small group play so if you wanted to focus on getting things done then you can do that. No pressure because it's not like people will clear content you wanted to participate in and move on before you catch up. Most players I know who quit prior to 75 cap breaking were pleasantly surprised at the changes and they still play.

Ultimately I'd say it depends on why you want to return. If you're coming back to actually play and enjoy the game then there probably hasn't been a better time than now.

If you're returning for the 'return to vana'diel' campaign, then you're just scratching the itch. Go ride the ferry and exact your revenge on the Horror for what she did to you a decade ago. Round up a bunch other people who are just on for the week and raid Bernie in Gustaberg. Maybe spend a day just traveling around trying to see how many unclaimed NMs you can take a selfie with. Smiley: lol

You're either serious or you're not, but you may not find out until you try it. All you really have to lose is a little hard drive space.

I didn't have much problems installing and updating, the only thing that happaned was that I had to activate "Direct Play" since I am on Windows 10.

As for what to do, I do feel like I would enjoy the story, but I have not done any WotG missions etc so I suspect I'd have to work on that too and not sure if I am up to it. I am enjoying just running around looking for NMs etc. None of my friends plays so I think I will just have fun for a week with the old things I loved the game for.

Yeah same, I noticed some of the storyline roadblocks and... eurghhh. It is cool to see all the old characters again though. Aldo rules.
