How is FF14 now?Follow

I started playing FF14:ARR when it launched. I managed to get to level 42 on my first character before I got sick of FATE grinding and quit the game. I liked a lot about the game, but I didn't like how FATE grinding was seemingly the best way to level, how quests ran out as you went from class to class, and there didn't seem to be a PvP system in-game.

So, from this perspective, I ask how the game is now?

1) Is FATE grinding still the best way to level? Is this better than it used to be? (ie. group up, do the same 8 FATES a dozen times each where all you do is try to tag a bunch of mobs that are being AoE'd down)?

2) Is there a rewarding PvP system in place?

3) How is the end-game?

The game is still going strong!

An expansion is due to hit the scene here in a month and a half or some-such, and things are looking up.

There is a PvP system from what I hear that does reward some decent-ish gear at endgame, though I'm not there yet myself so I'll let someone else elaborate on that. I, myself, have very little interest in PvP after my woes with how horrible WoW's PvP was. I've heard that XIV's is better, though, so I'll give it a chance when I get there.

As far as #1.... there's Palace of the Dead.

That's the best way to level now, once you get to Lv15. PotD is .... unique. It's a 4-person dungeon that does not require specific roles, and hence, has really fast Q times. Your level does not matter while in PotD, you level seperately inside of PotD than you do outside of it, and your progress gets saved every 10 floors and you can reset to floor 1 anytime you like, and you can start from floor 51 once you get there, etc. Each run takes 30-60 minutes, and when you finish the run, you get XP that is comparable to a daily roulette (minus the in-dungeon kills, though. Kinda like getting a Baby Primal on your Leveling Roulette), but you can do it as many times in a day as you like.

You can get two different kinds of rewards from this: Lv60 weapons for any job you like once you get enough upgrades to your in-dungeon gear (you'll have to just see it in action, or read a detailed guide to understand what I mean here), and also random treasure bags that you need appraised by an NPC outside of the dungeon.

It's far more fun than FATE grinding, though I wouldn't write out FATEs entirely; I still grab them when I see them. That's just me personally though.

But if you were Lv42 on your first character... how did you run out of quests when the Main Story Quests are set up in such a way that you couldn't possibly run out of quests? *blinks* Unless you weren't doing the Roulettes now and then? Roulettes give a LOT of XP, even though it doesn't actually say that in the UI, it just has a glowing up arrow. They really should tell you exactly how much XP you'd get from the roulette, so that it isn't misleading.

Even the Guildhest Roulette gives XP comparable to a quest turn-in, and Leveling Roulette gives far, far more than that + kills inside a dungeon. At the 40s, I've gotten an entire levelup out of one Brayflox or especially Stone Vigil run, if you drink some mineral water or eat some other cheap food (pretty much all food gives the +3% XP buff, even if it's Lv1 food that can be gotten anywhere).

What are roullettes? They must have been added after I played the game.

Questing was slower than FATE grinding at higher levels when I quit, but it was faster at lower levels. So if I switched classes I had nothing to do but FATE grind. If I wanted to level fast, I had nothing to do but FATE grind.

I understood maybe half of what you said, because the systems were either not in place or I was not high enough level when I played the game before.

Roulettes are collections of dungeons that you've unlocked. So for instance the Leveling Roulette contains all the dungeons from 1-49 and from 51-59 as you unlock them. You get an enhanced reward for completing a roulette once per day (for leveling roulette it's a ton of experience and some GC seals). You queue for a roulette in the duty finder and it picks a random dungeon for you to do from the roulette's list. Do it, get reward.

FATE grinding hasn't been an efficient way to level for a while now. Like Lyrailis said, Palace of the Dead is technically the most efficient way to level. But it sounds like you quit the first time because you got burned out and spamming any one piece of content just because it's the most mathematically efficient is going to do that to you again whether it's FATEs or dungeons or PotD. I'd recommend doing a variety of content and just letting the exp come as it does. The leveling in this game is pretty fast even if you're not trying to be super hardcore about it.

You must have played REALLY early, because I got into FFXIV not that long after ARR's release, and Roulettes were a thing.

Though, I suppose you could have missed it? Or not noticed it was there?

But yeah, you simply open Duty Finder and you'll see the Roulettes listed. As long as you are Level 16+ and have unlocked at least Sastasha, you can do the Leveling Dungeon roulette. I think the Guildhest Roulette is added at Lv10, even IIRC. Not entirely sure about that. It's something like that.

When you get Lv50, other roulettes become available: Trials, Main Scenario (the two 8-man dungeons at Lv50 having to do with the Imperials) and Lv50 Dungeons (a huge huge list of Lv50 dungeons, including hardmodes of older dungeons). Trials are unlocked by doing a few of the MSQ 8-man boss battles (Thornmarch, Leviathan, etc). This gives you more roulettes per day that give a ton of XP, I bet one level per day between the them, easy. Maybe more if you unlock everything. Just the Leveling and Lv50 Trials can easily give you a level or close to it depending on what you actually get. Sastasha or Ifrit probably won't give you a whole levelup, but Stone Vigil sure would at Lv40s!

And yeah, like Callinon said, you probably don't want to spam Palace of the Dead. Even I get tired of the place, and I love the XP it gives. I mix it up with some questing, the daily roulettes, and if I'm really getting bored, I'll just do daily roulettes and do some crafting/guildleves instead.

Also, there's the Challenge Log (make sure you unlock that! That's Lv30 IIRC). A well-placed Challenge Log completion can add 5-10% of a level and earn you other rewards such as GC seals for GC-related challenges, Money, and XP.

You can also do things like level your chocobo companion (again, Lv30 to unlock) by doing FATEs... FATE grinding gets old, but if you're accomplishing two goals with one activity (character XP and your bird's XP), I find it's a lot more interesting and pleasing.

Also, nice thing about Roulettes, is that if you're a Tank, you get a special bonus (well, it says "Adventurer in Need", but it's wanting Tanks 99.9% of the time, though I have seen Healers pop on it once in awhile). And if someone in the party has not completed that duty yet, you get ANOTHER bonus at the end. Being a Tank and ending up in a dungeon with a Newbie can add a huge chunk of XP, lol.

Just to give you some idea... I've been doing Lv50 trials with my PLD, once a day... my PLD is now almost 58 and I've not stepped foot in Lv51+ content yet with my PLD, JUST from doing Trials Roulette once a day for the past 2-3 weeks. I've been using the Leveling Dungeon roulette to get my NIN on 50 so I can do the Main Story Quest with NIN. But now that NIN is on 50, I use leveling dungeons on my WHM instead.

I can't really contribute to this thread, but am looking forward start playing myself. Been on hiatus from gaming, and didn't have a rig to play current AAA games. New rig is delivered tomorrow.

...yeah, my post was very un-constructive lol.

No problem! It is good to look over the thread though (which I assume you have) to get even more info about the game as now you're closer to being able to play.

Well I played a lot longer than you did and then took a break but honestly the game is pretty much the same thing.

I do not PvP so not comment.
I also do not level much so I am not sure what others do for that.

I pretty much just run end game and it has been pretty much the same since 50. They may call it something different but it really is all the same. For example: Diadem just more fates. End game you pretty much run duty roulette to cap tomes just different tomes.

Catching up is a breeze really.

Story is still good.

Crafting is still fun.

Dungeons are still cookie cutter.

Raids are actually a little harder but too many looking for carries. If anything goes wrong there are still allot of babies in this game that drop on one fail.

Housing still stinks and none is available.

Don't forget when Yoshi P personally ran over your dog with his car.

For someone looking to get back into the game I think it's ok to stick to answering the questions without a ton of editorializing. Let them form their own opinions.

Opinions are like b*ttholes, everybody's got one.

However, when someone is asking for facts, they don't need opinions.

And I'm quite sure he's absolutely wounded to the core that you ignored him. /sarcasm

And besides, I don't think someone who is coming back really needs opinions from a super jaded, never actually happy player who can't be made happy no matter what the developers do unless they catered to your every whim.

I don't think I've ever seen you actually compliment something having to do with the game without burying it in a sea of complaints. Sometimes I think you'd be better off just quitting the game if you are that jaded about it. Sheesh.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't go rating it 150/100 or anything like that, but seriously, I find the game reasonably fun. It's never going to be "perfect" but the words "good" and "fun" still easily apply here.

Oh thats right Lyrailis and your opinions are fact and every one else posts that does not agree with you is not.

See this is why this forum is dead. It always is the same few that gang up on someone who doesn't 100 percent like the game. They put words in people mouths that was never said. Force these people to leave so the few left are with like mind/same opinion people so they feel superior. It is always the same few people. Nothing is 100 percent good ever like the few cheerleaders left seem to think. Do not worry I will not post in the FFXIV forum anymore so you can feel Superior. Just think if you didn't have different in opinions there would be nothing to discuss. Oh gee explains why so little post on here.

Also it is not that he disagrees it he is a smart *** with all his replies.

Really, now? And here I thought it was dead because A). it has an archaic as all crap forum system and it has a ton of lag, B). Most MMOs have official forums these days, and C). ZAM was always about the close-knit communities for the most part.

Oh come on, you can do better than that.

I've read several complaints against XIV from people like myself... I remember even a couple other players here, I forget their names, they had a few minor complaints about the game.

But, see, they aren't always spewing out vomit about the game either. They act like they enjoy the game, but sometimes they got this little thing that tweaks their chain they need to talk about.

You, on the other hand, all I see is vitriol and vomit with the occasional paper towel to help clean it up. Problem is, one needs a whole freaking roll to clean up all the junk you spew out.

Did I say I think FFXIV is 100%? No, if you read above, I said the game is not perfect, but "good" and "fun" are words I would use to describe it.

Yeah, I think it's more that ZAM has turned their focus away from the forums. If you look, they haven't been updated in like 7 years; not to mention the systemic problems that never get solved. The forums aren't even linked on the main site anymore. ZAM is all about MMO and gaming news now, the community aspects are limited to those few fansites like wowhead that more or less built their own. So now on these forums you pretty much find people who've been here forever. That's why the community is so small. Attrition without replacement.

If you honestly believe this is true, I feel truly sad for you. The fact that the FFXI forum STILL has an at least equally active community, if not more-so when you include sub-forums, just proves how completely and unequivocally inaccurate you are here.

Kinda sad you need to sh*t on someone else who might not like the game as much as you. Kinda validates his point as to exactly why this forum is dead...

That sentence doesn't even make sense. I think that is a pretty clear signifier that your opinion is nothing more than that... an opinion. The opinion of someone with a vague grasp on reality.

Sigh... and this is exactly why myself, and clearly a sh*tload of others, left this forum.

And don't worry, a smart*ss response from you isn't necessary, I don't plan on sticking around. I instantly remember why I left this forum more than a year ago and sad to see nothing has changed.

I'm not really sure why you felt it necessary to revive this just to spit on an active forum member, but ok. Let's take a look at that.

The main FFXI forum isn't posted on any more regularly than this one is and the majority of posts are Szabo posting about patches (each patch gets 3 posts: patch announcement, patch template, and actual patch notes). There's a little discussion but not much.

I did see a few of the server forums have had some activity in the last month, so maybe that's what you're talking about? Either way it doesn't look like they're any more active than this forum is, they're probably a little less active.

Unfortunately, ZAM decided that they didn't care to maintain their forums as a main feature of the site. So the only people still here are the ones that have been here forever. Most others have migrated to either their game's official forums or to places like Reddit. And that's fine. Those places have their uses and I've used both myself for various things. Personally I like the small community we have here. We can discuss things without overzealous mods looking for excuses to ban people (for instance). We're also a small enough group that getting to know each other's quirks is a thing that can reasonably happen. I find that valuable myself.

You came to defend Nashred and that's fair. this thread taken entirely in a vacuum makes us look like jerks. I don't know how long you've been gone from here though. Nash has been lurking around here for years spouting the same complaints over and over again for literal years. It got old, and the rest of us got pretty sick of it. I realize that doesn't paint us in the best light, but that's how it is. Like I said, taken in a vacuum, this thread makes him look like quite the martyr, but the reality is quite different.
