After only a week or so, I am getting extremely frustrated with PvP.
As in - I truly suck and never win. Even when i see them coming, they two-shot me before I can even get a hit. And everyone seems to hit harder than me. I understand getting clobbered by a troll hunter with six more levels than me, but a bloody MAGE?/???
I've gotten so weird that I almost never take a road in contested areas or when on minor quests. It takes longer to trek through the bush, but it cuts way down on the ambushes. And it does help with my skinning - most skinnable beasties aren't on the roads anyway.
Was everybody bad at this at first. or are there some of us who should just stick to fighting the AI?

It sounds like you're mostly talking about world PvP? In which case encounters are often unbalanced, as people usually only start fights they know they can win. If you're running around without heirlooms I imagine you're a pretty tempting snack.
As a whole though being good at PvP takes a lot of practice and homework. Learning your own abilities and how to counter the other 29ish class/specs out there doesn't happen over night.

Heirlooms are BoA leveling gear purchased from the Justice vendors in your capital city. Heirlooms raise stats as you level, thus eliminating the need to replace pieces ( whatever pieces of BoA equipment you have acquired )and they also give a exp bonus. Heirlooms weapons give no exp bonus, but are usually better than anything until the mid to high 70's. Clear enough?
Heirlooms are gear, purchasable at max level, designed for leveling up alts.
The way it's set up the gear gains stats every time you gain a level. The pieces are generally very strong; approximately equal to a blue item at the current level. A character with several pieces of enchanted heirloom gear will pretty much clean the floor with a character in a mix of questing greens and instance blues. See this thread for examples.
As a side note, I remember my lvl 39 Nelf Hunter being owned by a lvl 41 Hunter who'd upgraded most of his gear to mail. It does (or did at least) make a difference. Of course back then I was in a lot of agility+spirit gear and gaming the 5-second rule so I could grind endlessly without drinking. So you might want to take that with a grain of salt...

Yeah, lowbie PvP will be brutal - heirloom characters will massacre you. I want to run a test sometime, using the best items available at a given level versus heirloom items. I have no doubt the "correct level" characters will still be weaker.
There are some ways to help yourself. Enchants are incredibly useful - look especially (when under level 35) for +100 health to chest (major health?) and superior stamina to bracers (+9 stamina). ANY level character can get these enchants, that's at least 190 extra hp. Makes a huge difference, especially in the under 20 brackets.
Assuming you're in over 30 brackets, you get more options for enchanting. I'd scroll around wowhead's database to see what you can use. Since items start to last a BIT longer at these levels, it might be worth it going for pricey enchants. Especially if you have extra gold from skinning all those beasties while avoiding roads

Once you hit 80 you can probably start purchasing the 80 heirlooms and 85 you can buy the new ones (or is it strictly 85 for all now?) Frankly I never worried much about enchants when leveling my first character. I had to deal with some world pvp but not a lot. If you find someone around your level and get a jump on them you should be able to take them out pretty easily. If you wanted to avoid it you could wait to see what they do but if they get the jump it might be hard to recover, have to be either proactive or reactive.
Got a question about using feign death in PVP mode. Since I've never seen it used against me, I'm not too sure what happens. Won't the lack of notification of honor points or XPs be a giveaway that the 'dead" hunter didn't really die?

Nothing. The real benifit from using FD in PvP is that is drops you as a target for anyone targeting you. You can use that to interrupt casts though by Feigning as the spell is being cast.

This is exceptionally useful when you're able to lose yourself in a mob of other friendlies. I more or less spammed it back in my Alterac Valley days. It was invaluable for breaking them off of you. Even in less chaotic situations, most people in battlegrounds will not waste their time to retarget you. I've killed so many lazy people that way...
