Are there that many item descriptions? The potential ******* seems a lot smaller than in FC3 and I don't think there's any crafting (haven't seen hint of it yet anyway and animals don't drop materials).

All the weapons, attachments, animals, VHS Tapes, Research Notes, and various menu screens have unique descriptions on them. There are probably other things that I haven't found yet.

Well, yeah but they all did in FC3 as well. My point is that there's fewer of them overall.

I'm curious about KTurner's hatred for the game.

To put it simply: too much stealth and I'm not a stealth game fan. hated Deus Ex HR because of it, hated Crysis 3 because of it, hated the MGS games.

I didnt get far at all, only did the first area where you get captured and stripped of your gear, then it tells you to go somewhere 'undetected' and i shut it off.

Put aside the stealth bits and I wasn't impressed with the gameplay. /shrug. Maybe it gets better and maybe i'll revisit it someday but I've got no shortage of top tier games sitting around still.

It was only mandatory stealth for that section as a tutorial and to introduce you to the Blood Dragons. If you want to go all out for the rest of the game there is nothing stopping you from doing so.

There's some stealth later on: Rescuing the scientists in the side missions requires you to use some stealth since they'll start shooting the hostage when they see you. Although you can also snipe them from distance I believe provided they don't ever actually locate you visually. Bow and arrow work best since they'll hear and locate you if you're using an unsilenced weapon. Or get in close with the suppressed pistol but that requires stealth to get into reasonable pistol range.

Speaking of, I was on the dam last night and crouched behind some boxes. I killed a guy with an arrow from hiding and someone came over to investigate his dead co-worker. So I shot him. And the next guy. And the next guy. And the guy after that who thought a pile of corpses was something to walk toward rather than away from. It was pretty ridiculous in an amusing fashion.

Lol, I did the same thing in a garrison that had one of the mental shielded Blood Dragons standing guard. Best part about that was the fact that the jeep patrol kept driving past the fresh bodies without stopping.

I know what you mean, and thats how Crysis and DE:HR were. Stealth wasnt required but I still got the sense that the developers wanted me to play that way and going in guns blazing always had the same effect: alarms sound, reinforcements come, kill em all, repeat.

Playing FC3, I had the sense that both styles were equally effective. Yeah, you had to kill more people if you went in hostile (vs disabling alarms, etc) but that was part of the fun of the guns blazin' approach. Unlike what I played of DE:HR, there's no shortage of weapons or ammo so you're not penalized for wanting to just gun it out.

The combination of effective paths sometimes crossed in fun ways. I could mine a road and then sneak into camp and place C4 charges on the vehicles. Sneak out, shoot a few guys, let them call in reinforcements to drive to the camp, some of them also jump into the jeep to chase me and the rest writes itself. Far less efficient than just sitting in a bush and plinking them off with a silenced sniper rifle but a whole lot of fun in its own right.

This is how crysis 1 was, and it worked for me because it was very open world, like (ive heard) far cry 3 is. Plus the suit in crysis made it more fun imo.

Does FC:BD become open world at some point?

I will say that FC3 is a better game than FC:BD. I appreciate what BD is doing but the fact remains that the game is an intentional joke and tongue-in-cheek affair. If nothing else, FC3's tropical visuals are much easier on the eyes than the over-saturated dark blue & red color palette of BD.

Short version: Even if you dislike BD, you might still enjoy FC3 judging from what you describe liking.

^This. I cannot tell you how many times I've walked off a cliff in BD because I couldn't tell where the end of the cliff was when it was overlapping with the grass on the ground below.

I discovered a new definition for hilarity today. Hilarity is a tower full of snipers getting picked off one by one by a guy with a bright neon-blue bow sitting 200 ft away from them in the open.

There's a fine line between hilarity and bad game design.

Gamefly deal XCOM and Civ 5 bundle for $16, Steam activated. Use code GFDMAY20.

Edit: Technically this makes XCOM less than $10.

Just checked the BD map, the reason why there are so few weapons is because the entire game is based on the eastern half of the first island. Vaas' compound is where the small island on the top of the map is located.
