Why not just play SC as if it was HC?
Because I'm bad at sticking with self-imposed rules.

I haven't played HC, but I assume it's a lot like the feeling I get when I play DayZ. It's a rush that very, very few games can give you. And not having those rules enforced wouldn't have the same impact.

What do you mean? Delete the character if you die?

The logic goes both ways then, why not just play Hardcore if you're going to play like that, save yourself the time and effort of having to delete the character?

I think he meant play SC with the same kind of care and urgency that HC takes. I just can't do it, though.

My theme today was apparently hot heroine. I decided to check out the weeklong deals on a lark and snagged Xblades ($1.50) and Velvet Assassin($0.74)

Of the two Velvet Assassin seems the more interesting so far. It took some research to get it to run but it's playing fine now. If anyone picks it up I can give some experience on which of the fixes actually makes it run. Graphics are decent. Stealth killer game from WW2 that tickles my Tenchu nostalgia.

I'm weird about stealth games. Some I hate ( Dues Ex) some I absolutely adore (Dishonered, Tenchu). So far I am giving this one a solid seems ok so far.

XBlades on the other hand is pretty shallow button mashing. But kind of a nice break from serious stealthing. The two games are complementing each other in a way. Lose my patience stealthing. Go Smash a million mob spawn in Xblades. Get bored with that, go be all serious again.

Not bad for $2.25 cents so far. As far as these things go.

Been playing Stalker: Call of Pripyat lately. Despite something like a hundred hours in Shadow of Chernobyl, I had never gotten into Call of Pripyat. I think the first time I was just burnt out (had just played SoC), then I started and an emission killed me like 15 minutes in and I said "nuts to this", couple other false starts, re-tried it a few days ago then learned that the CoP Complete mod now breaks the game, reinstalled with a different mod, hit a point with constant crashes to desktop, uninstalled, reinstalled, started over and am finally well into it. A worthy successor to Shadow of Chernobyl and most of the Quality of Life improvements from SoC Complete are part of the CoP base game (repairs, namely) so playing this vanilla is fine. My older son was watching me play and was amused by me wandering into a building, hearing a shouted Russian (Ukrainian?) phrase, a burst of machine gun fire and then me promptly being dead. Good ole Stalker... certainly less forgiving than when he's playing Borderlands 2.

So Wasteland 2 is out and people seem to be receiving it well. I was a little tempted by all the launch praise to use a 20% Gamersgate coupon and go in on it for $32 but think I'll hold off and see how it's priced for the winter sales. I don't really need a new game right now and told myself that I'd try to get through Witcher 1/2 (or at least 2) before Witcher 3 launched in January and Alien: Isolation is out in a few more weeks as well.

I've been watching wasteland for a good price. Was tempted during the summer sale to buy it with my saved up wallet funds but bought divinity instead. I'm sure I'll grab wasteland this winter during the next sale.

Finished Shadowrun Returns "Dead Man's Switch" last night. I gotta say I rather enjoyed it. The pace is slow with lots of reading but it's like having a pen and paper GM describe the characters and encounters to you. Made me nostalgic.

I'll probably pick up the follow up expansion pack soon which people say is even better.

Finished Call of Pripyat and, while it was a worthy game in the franchise and good reason to stay in the Exclusion Zone a bit longer, it was a little disappointing that the game didn't feature more of Pripyat itself. Shadow of Chernobyl had a more compelling layout in both atmosphere and inhabitants and, for whatever reason, they made all new areas for Call of Pripyat so some of the most distinctive regions (the hotel, the park with its iconic Ferris wheel) are only seen in the distance.

Anyway, my son was looking to play a new game on his PS3 and I reminded him that the Christmas season is coming up so he could ask for a game or buy it himself on sale if he showed a little patience. Then I had a mental spark of brilliance and combined his love of Skyrim with his interest in watching me play Stalker and set him up with a $10 copy of Fallout 3 to pass the time until the holidays. Would have liked to gotten him the GOTY edition but all the reviews talk about how much the GOTY edition freezes and locks up to the point of unplayability.

He's taken to it so far and watching him play made me get a bug to play it. I've already played FO3 though but never played New Vegas so I installed and started that last night. Plus I can get my post-apocalypse fix on without springing for full-priced Wasteland 2.

I've played both FO3 and FNV so many times through. I modded the crap out of FNV for my 5th play through earlier this year. That was kind of fun you can make it look really pretty with the higher end texture packs.

Yeah, I'd heard good things about FNV. I haven't been buying much lately and am trying to make a concerted effort to play the games that I know are well regarded. One thing to let a bunch of bundle fodder rot in your library but I also own stuff I'm pretty confident is good if only I took the time to play it.

On one hand, Planetary Annihilation has been a major disappointment for the people who bought into it via Kickstarter and Early Access and so the developers moving onto another project has to cheese some people off...

On the other hand, I'm upset that I can't own this right now.

In reality, I'll of course wait until it's released (if) and on sale. I ain't Kickstartin' no $20 games to be released in 2016.

Ahh Kickstarter. It's like the lottery. Your not buying/gambling on the actual product. Your paying to let your imagination run wild.

Meh, Kickstarter has it's moments. I've gotten some decent novelty crap, a pinstriping tool that was extremely useful/convenient, I'm waiting on a bunch of games still, and I got a **** brown OUYA that was a complete waste of money. I honestly wish I didn't contribute to that project.

Kickstarter is a very bad investment vehicle for the consumer, and a reasonably good tool for a developer. It's a pretty site, and people love it though.

Shadows of Mordor sounds like a lot of fun, from pretty much everything I've seen. I've heard that the overall story is bland, but that the individual moments and flavor and characters are all great.

Good thing I have no time to play games, or I'd be $60 poorer right now. Smiley: lol

I don't know about that. You need to be selective, but it's really not bad if you are. Like I put a few hundred into last year's Reaper Bones kickstarter and I am getting a very nice discount off the retail price of a crapton of miniatures. It sucks waiting a year for them but... when that delicious box of goodies arrives, the time spent waiting will be forgotten as I drown in hundreds of miniatures.

Another one I backed is a original deck of tarot cards made by a friend of mine. The kickstarter pretty much only covered the making of the decks. I'll be happy to own a signed limited edition copy of the deck and a framed print of one of the cards for 60 bucks.

Then again, value is really in the eye of the beholder. I've looked at some of them and have not been remotely tempted as they charge way too much for what you're getting. I basically see it as a time-deferred purchase and deal only with proposals put forward by those I trust.

I've never backed a video game either... would rather just get those games for a buck from a humble sale later.

I backed the Tides of Numenara kickstarter, and so I'm getting the game and a bunch of additional stuff for $50.

7 novellas, a comic, the soundtrack, strategy guide, concept art.

Either way, I was looking at it like a huge preorder bonus. Except better, because I could decide exactly what bonuses I wanted depending on how much I was willing to pay.

I could have JUST gone for the game for like $20? $25? Something like that.

Of course, this was from a reputable group, and it was a big following, so I wasn't worried about the product not materializing. I was also willing to pay a little more, since the indirect benefit was more development funding, so bigger game.

Can't speak for the overall game play yet but Alien: Isolation looks friggin' gorgeous on my computer. Started it and played a little but I decided to wait until tonight for the dark and headphones to really get into it. Some reviews said it ran a little long and thus overdid its welcome (others just said its great) so I want my first real impression of it all to have maximum impact.

At the 86 minute mark, I have yet to actually see said Alien. I've done a lot of wandering around the station which is very nice and atmospheric but, you know, some sort of conflict at some point would be nice.

Strange. One of the reviews I read said the alien was way too frequent to the point of becoming so common it lost it's scary factor.
