Anyone planning on getting this at release? I haven't kept up too much with it since the E3 debut and the demo. But last week I was working on a machine with a coworker, and he mentioned he was looking forward to it. Got me thinking about it again. In light of Bioshock Infinite/Elizabeth, I'm hoping that this Ellie character following you is useful, interactive, and a lot more interactive with the other characters, not just the environment. So far the demo videos have shown promise.

Oh. That sucks. I thought it was slated for early May.

The 15-minute gameplay video on their website looks awesome. I had seen another video where she helped out in a fight, smashing a guy with a brick to save the main character. Apparently her AI was one of their main foci, so I'm pretty excited about the game.

Ya, I think the first gameplay demo was the same place in the game as the 15 minute demo. But it showed Joel run out of ammo, get pinned by one of the guys, and she came around the corner with a brick and smashed the guy. And sometime around there she also stabbed someone in the back with a small knife. I think the first one also stopped before the elevator scene.

Edit:
That might actually show some of her AI. She didn't attack with the brick because Joel never ran out of ammo and got in trouble. Joel also picked up the brick they passed and used it earlier. I can't remember if the first demo had that or not.

I think we're at this point where there is no original enemies in games. Demon, Zombies, Ghosts, Robots, Humans (of differing views, so we don't feel so bad for killing them) or some variation/subtle difference of those.

I'm interested. It looks like RE5/6 + Uncharted + Bioshock Inf. If they pull it off its going to be game of the year (or 2nd place to Bioshock:Inf) but being console exclusive is going to hurt its sales overall.

I wont get it day one (Unless I get it for at least 25% off preorder) Ill wait til the 29.99/39.99 mark and decide then (Or reactivate Gamefly and rent it)

While true, I agree that zombies are getting a bit played out.

My heart died a little playing Bioshock Infinite during the "fight the ghost while she raises zombies" scene.

Huh I was more freaking out trying to survive (I played on Hard First). That part was super frantic cause only upgraded weapons that would be good for 1-4 enemies, so I kept running out of ammo and running around, using lesser powered weapons, like a chicken with my head cut off.

Ya, that scene played by really fast for me. Probably cause I had spent about 45 minutes just prior to it exploring every route and picking up every item, upgrade, gear, etc. before continuing the story. Once I continued the story it was over before I had realized it. I couldn't find out how to open that gate right next to her tomb to get the gear out of it though... spent a few running around the building trying to find a lever or something, and went back after I beat here thinking it may unlock, but no. I haven't 100% that game, I played one play through for about 14 hours and now just am waiting for some DLC before touching it again.

A long interview/gameplay video from Friday. Live gameplay demo begins at 35 minutes.

First thing it shows is quick time events. I know some people don't care for quick time events but I have no problem with them.

I've been worried it was going to have them for a long time now, which is partly why I've actively avoided news about the game.

Not thrilled. I'm definitely zombied-out.

I had really hoped The Last of Us would be a post-apocalyptic tale that was ultimately just about humans and human nature, with all its highs and its horrible, depraved lows.

Mind-controlled undead/people just aren't interesting antagonists to me. I honestly wasn't interested in Zombie stories before this fad, and I'm way less interested in them now. It's not that I don't see something interesting in the story - the concept of a desperate fight for survival against an enemy so pervasive (and the emotional backfire associated with seeing your loved ones turn) is well and good - but I just prefer stories more human.

The depravities of humanity, particularly in a post-apocalyptic setting, should more than suffice. And man dooming itself is just a better story than some unknown contagion turning us all to undead.

Seems to me to be exactly about the human experience in a post apocalyptic setting. Because for the most part the clicker (zombie) is not the enemy. It's the other humans. The demo shown in that latest one was about 13 minutes long and there wasn't a single clicker involved. The first enemies it shows are a gang of survivors who are killing others to get their supplies. Including what appeared to be a torture room where survivors were mutilated by this group of "Hunters" and a back yard where a pile for charred, seemingly uninfected humans, where left by the Hunters..

Interestingly, it would probably be more unusual and impactful to me to have a young boy following along. It's cliche to have the young girl pushed into having to kill monster or zombies or aliens or whatever and turn super resourceful, etc. After years of "kick ***" school girls, I think I'd be more affected to see an eleven year old boy have to shoot someone.

Funny enough, one of the first questions after the gameplay demo is along the lines of "Did it ever cross your guys' minds to reverse the gender roles? A middle aged woman and a young boy."

Edit:
Speaking of man/woman swapping. I cannot tell if the host of this video is a man or a woman. Got a Pat thing going on there.

That's good, I hope the final experience does not rely on them much at all. I'd be happier if they didn't exist at all, but you can't have everything.

Honestly, unless we're going to deal with the fallout from zombie purists and accept draugr as sufficient zombie material, I'm going to have to assume it was... FFX. Zombie fiends in Bevelle Dome.

I own some game with zombies, but I'm so meh about them right now I haven't played them. I WILL play The Walking Dead game at some point, because I know it's really about the cast first and foremost. But it's hard to get over that hump...

Sacrilegious as it may be, I got bored with The Walking Dead pretty quickly. Played like a Choose Your Own Adventure except with more zombies than usual. "Do you save the little girl or the little boy? Oh no, now someone is mad at you! Turn to Page 55..."

From what I gather, the last page is the same no matter what page you turned to which doesn't endear me either.

Nah, it doesn't quite have that - the diverging parts are very narrow in scope. You don't truly have a ton of agency. Typically, if a character avoids the axe in one key situation, there'll be a sillier excuse a few feet down the road for them to get killed that you can't avoid. You might have different allies accompany you for different periods, and a few details may change, but ultimately all roads lead to Rome.

Personally, I don't think that's a slight against the game at all. Affording player "choice" in games is just one particular design - it's not inherently positive or negative. The Walking Dead's choices are included mostly so that the player can sculpt their version of the protagonist, and they do an excellent job of that.

Hm, okay then. I'm fine with that, it's just not how I had heard the game described in general.

Honestly I dont mind a game story with interactive bits. As gamers we put lots of stock into continuity. Look at fighting games, they always have a canon winner, becuase otherwise there is no way to go to the next phase of the story. Besides from what I am to gather, the choices flesh out the characters more than overshadow the whole plot. They knew from sales they would probably be making a 2nd season, and this gives them a good jumping off point intsead of telling everyone that got a different ending "Ohh thats not the real one"

Mass effect knew it was going to be a trilogy, they had no excuse to not give multiple ending based on your choices.

(edit: My trip was fine, Im in seattle using my Rooted Evo 4g to Tether for some besic net.)
