Who are you talking to? I don't know how to answer your question "Does Lost Odyssey count?". Lost Odyssey wasn't a Square Enix project. It was Mistwalker, the company that did Blue Dragon.

Lost Odyssey was produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the famed Final Fantasy series
This very same person produced FFIX, which was suggested to whoever was asking. The game is basically FF in every way but name, hence the question. It's also closer to what could be considered "current-gen" than FFIX.

The idea is that the newer games are probably not the best and this would be a better alternative.

I completely missed the question, and the lack of a quote in the first post made me have no idea what the context of the question was.

FFIX seems to be love-it or loathe-it. I just can't get interested in it, at all.

FFVII has one of the best stories, but it's definitely a dated game.

FFVIII interested me... until it went batsh*t crazy and nothing made sense ever again. Well, it lost me before that, but still. I could never really get into its characters. Squall is vastly more interesting in the KH series than he is in FFVIII, unfortunately.

FFX is still near and dear to my heart. I love the game, I'll always love the game, it's hard for me to find any fault in the game at all. Disclaimer: I'm sure I'm blinded here, so don't take my word for it.

FFXII could have been great, and some people DO hail it as one of the greatest FF games, but IMO it has three major problems. 1, it really should have been a launch title for this generation. The environments are large and beautiful, but there's some odd sound compression issues. 2, you can't quite connect to the characters. Vaan (the lead) is really meant to be a representative of the common man in an otherwise global, political conflict. But it ends up being that he's more a narrator watching the story unfold with the other characters (who are universally more important - except Penelo, I suppose). 3, its pacing isn't well managed. There's far, far more grinding than it has any right to expect of a player.

That said, it also has one of the best combat systems in the entire series (I like FFX-2 and FFXIII's more, but still).

FFXIII might be another love-it or hate-it one. I really enjoyed the game. It's absurdly beautiful, obviously. But I thought the characters were some of the most well-written in any game I've played. But I've gotten into LONG debates in this very forum with people who argue the opposite. All I can tell you is I found that the characters changed and grew over time in a very organic, meaningful way.

The plot is interesting, if you're willing to invest in it, and far more confusing than it should be if you are not. It's also a story of your party getting manipulated by MANY interested players, which keeps it hard to find a firm place to figure things out.

But I thought the combat system was great. It's fast paced, it's difficult. You only play one character, but you generally manage the roles of the other two. That said, the difference between keeping tight control of what roles they're using and not bothering at all is massive.

Quote:
Thing is this is the same company that felt 2.2 Mil for Tomb Raider and 1.7 mil for Sleeping dogs was bad.

That's a pretty severe twisting of words and dismissal of core concepts.

The sales expectations are in line with what they expect on the ROI of their expenditures. Tomb Raider's numbers (3.6 mil btw), are awesome for sales. But they're low for the sheer amount of money they dumped into the game with advertising and development.

Meanwhile, the sales expectations for FFXIII were 5 million, and SE sold 1.6 million more than that.

At the end of the day, it's relative. You can sell 4 million games and have it be an ungodly success, you can sell 4 million games and have it be an abysmal failure.

But the thing to remember is that sales goals are actually goals. Failure to meet them doesn't mean failure, it means failure to make the product as profitable as they expected it to be. But since these companies aren't dumping 100 million into a game with sales goals of 10% profits, that's really not an issue. For every dollar they spent on Tomb Raider, they probably made at least $2 in profit.

Is it one of those unwritten forum rules that any thread mentioning final fantasy has to have a "which one is best debate?" Smiley: rolleyes

Can't go wrong with anything in the PS2 era. If I had to pick one it'd be FFX, but I wouldn't finish it because then I'd be sad. Smiley: frown

Ok If were listing FF's

1 Basic Boring Beat it On nintendo and PSP remake

2- I hated this things combat system it just ugh

3- Never played *yet*

4- Fun game overall good, really liked the story and characters.

5- Havent played through it all my save corrupted about half way through

6- One of the best FF's story wise, tons of characters and secrets and pretty open after WoR happens

7- OK First 3D, Awesome music,Memorable characters, Interesting take on the magic/ability system. Overall I liked it and had a ton of fun, but after going back its really easy.

8- GF system was frustrating, Main character was a wall personality wise. THe draw system was grindy as hell. Not terrible but not great

9 Not a bad game but the combat is really slow, I have a hard time getting into this one because of that reason. The characters are pretty predictable but I liked it overall.

10- Great story, great leap in graphics, love the combat system. One of the Best

10-2 Dress spheres, nuff said, Its easy (Dark knight sphere hold x win). The true ending was WAY to hard to get, It was completely Guide dang it!

11- Online game, sucks lives steals souls etc

12- Like Dig said Like FF11 offline the story is pretty meh I dont remember a ton of stuff and i found the game easy if you werent a complete moron at setting up the AI.

13- Was ok but not awesome, The tutorial took way to long, the game felt cramped and corridor-y. Bosses were actually pretty challenging.

13-2 put the disk in and never played the game once

My rating is 6>10>7>9=8>4>12>13>1>2

When you do, get the DS remake. They change the characters to actually give them backgrounds, rather than four generic characters you have at the beginning of the game. The overall story is pretty much the same, but the characters are integrated into the story much better.

Okay, I have no clue how to get that to work.

Also, KH3 is going to be cross-platform with XBone. So there's that.

XV and XIII are not related, so no prior knowledge is required.

After FFX, SE got some grand idea to try and create FF universes which led to FFX-2, all the extra FFVII crap, and FFXII being set in Ivalice from Tactics.
FFXIII was supposed to have a similar setup with Fabula Nova Crystallis or something, but I don't think it made sense to anyone and after everything has sort of fallen apart with FFXIII, it sounds like they're just saying @#%^ it and moving everything from Versus to XV. I guess the title is still part of the series or something? I don't know, SE doesn't really seem to be pushing it, at least in the US, anyway.

Fabula Nova was supposed to be a sort of conceptual mythology that they'd build different stories off of.

But that doesn't mean they'd have the same myths. They would be concepts that were to be built off of even to create the core mythology.

It looks nice but it looks very Action Rpg, I want turn based, not hack and slash. I think FF may be down after this for me. I dont mind innovation, but Innovation for innovations sake is bad. I want a game where I control 3/4/5 characters selecting if they attack or defend or what abilities to use on each of them. Not this new, I can kind of choose for my character but the other 2 are fully AI.

From looking at this it looks very much that or Hack and slash

There is a Weapon Bar down in the left, as attacks go off it moved. I don't know if the other 2 are all AI, or if you get to set them up (as Def or Off). The main guy instead of slicing did cast Fire. When that bar moved into a different weapon, one of the other 2's attack went off.

I don't even know the last new FF game that was turned based. The new Action RPG came with X-2 didn't it?
