I read somewhere that bunch of people from BG are going to playing on Diabolos, so I'll be playing on any server but that one.

Well the problem is that they were working with the original infrastructure from FFXIV. Which had all the problems people imagined it would have when they announced the weapon-based system.

And it still has those systems. They're just adding the job specs as a band-aid. Honestly, they should have scrapped the armory system altogether. It's just not a good design. It puts too much stress on something so arbitrary as weapon types and forces them to design jobs that share the bulk of their skills with other jobs.

What they're going to have to do down the road is start playing with skill allowances just within the class. So even when we look at the full list of Gladiator skills, Paladins are only going to get one set of them, Red Mages get another set, Ninjas another, etc.

And I imagine that would work just fine. But it's going to be a lot more work. I imagine the only reason they haven't launched the classes that way is because they don't have counterbalance specs yet, so they need people to be investing in the job system.

What I see happening is they release the counterbalance job and some new class abilities that suit that job at the same time, and then toss a few restrictions on existing abilities.

Like, right now, there isn't really much for a DD Gladiator. But it says they can drop the shield to increase their damage. I'm guessing that, once they add a new job that would suit that, they'll also add skills that require your offhand be empty ("grip the sword with both hands...") which Plds won't be able to socket. Then they might restrict one or two existing Glad abilities away from the Pld.

[EDIT]

In a way, it's like they're launching the game even though it's still in development. Which as an MMO designed to grow a single character is fine, but it's rough because the core class structure system is so incomplete that people can't really see how it's supposed to work.

Oh, and in case anyone missed it when I posted it earlier, how to back up your HUD and character creation files:
Quote:
I found this out today by pure accident. I think this should aid many other people. Now, this is assuming that the new Client creates a new folder within "My Games", and doesn't use our currently existing one.

1) Go to "My Games" folder. It's in "My Documents"

2) Go to "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Beta Version)" Folder

Now, you should see folders which are very similar to this image:
Screenshot
  • The Folder "4AXXXXX"*, which is boxed in Red is where all of your UI Layout Data, Macros, Keybinds, Hotbar Action Layout and Gear Sets are location. You get multiple of these folders for each character you have.
  • The Folder "FFXIV_CHRXXXXX", which is boxed in Green is your Configuration Settings. This is for what Hotbars you have enabled, as well as other Character Settings. You have multiple of these folders for each character you have.
  • The Files "FFXIV_CHARA_BETA0x.dat" which are boxed in Blue are my Character Creation files which I can import when creating a new character.

The 6 numbers at the end of the folder "4A" represent your character ID. This ID is also the same as the last 6 numbers of your "FFXIV_CHRXXXXX" folder. So these two folders are linked together. This may prove difficult to find out which Character ID goes with which one of your characters (if you have multiple).
(for example, my main character ID is 412554, which you can see at the end of both of these folders. This is not the same as your Lodestone ID)

NOTE: You may have 01XXXXXX instead of 4AXXXXXX. The first two letters/numbers are server related *

3) Go into folder "4AXXXXX"

Now you'll see a bunch of new .dat files. I'll list what each one does
  • addon.cnf - THIS IS YOUR UI/HUD LAYOUT FILE If you want to use your existing HUD/UI layout, make sure you save this file up. It is important
  • gearset.dat - This lists all of your gearsets and what items are currently in the sets
  • hotbar.dat - This all of the actions which are on your hotbar. This will save the layout of your actions on your hotbar, including your potions etc.
  • keybind.dat - This is fairly obvious. Its your keybinds. What button does what command
  • macro0.dat - I don't know if you can get many macro files, but I think each macroX.dat is for each page of your macro list. This backs up your macros
So if you want to back-up your entire UI layout, make sure you save these Files and Folders:

What you'd want to do is go into your desired characters folder, and back up:
  • addon.cnf
  • every file inside the folder "FFXIV_CHRXXXXX"
You can also transfer these files to your other characters.
Enjoy your remaining last few hours of P3 and get ready for Open Beta/Phase 4!
NOTE: It's important to back these up as we will be using a new client for FFXIV:ARR. If you want to keep everything for P4, then just transfer the entire contents of this folder to the new, assumed folder which we'll get with the new Client.

Ya when I hear Arcanist I thought RDM would be one of the options for sure. Then again I also thought Thatrumage was kinda like RDM, until they changed it.

I made a toon on Shiva and one on Diablos during Phase 3, I dont know if any of my friends from Titan(Pheonix) are going to be playing 14. So I have to rely on a Zam guild. I think they are making it on Ultros It sounds like but it also sounds like there's going to be guilds all over. Hopefully by the time P4 comes we will have a set server and where everyone is going.

Same. My FFXI Linkshell was perfect. Small, so I knew everyone pretty well. But quite active, at least socially, so there was almost always someone to chat with.

We had like 20-28 active members, with usually 15-18 people on every night, allowing for full alliance runs. In the event that more people were on, we'd switch to something we could work with two partial alliances. It was awesome.

To be fair, we weren't super active in the "Let's do stuff together" area. We were active in the "There are always people online to talk to."

Not that we didn't have our fair share of parties and events together, but it was mostly small impromptu stuff.

Oh, we were a former hardcore HNMLS. We still ran events 6 nights a week (Thursday was free day), but we only camped HNM if their windows fell within our normal event time.

Maybe I was a massive ******** back in the day, but I don't remember =10 being quite so bad. I know it could be harsh at times, but the ratio of nice/helpful/funny posts to douchebaggery posts seemed a bit more favorable. Of course, it could just be nostalgia goggles.

It had its share of d-bags, and it wasn't uncommon to in turn see them posting on BG about their instigating **** here and generally belittling the users out of forum pride of some usual net troll BS. They do it to the OF now, too. Could also argue a bit about circle-jerk conspiracies and the horrid Player of the Month concept that too frequently had nothing to do with your FFXI knowledge or helping others.

Anyway, I peek in on the XIV section now and then and there are certainly a few standouts for claiming XIV the worst game ever, it's gonna fail,such-and-such game did XYZ better, and so on. I've thrown out my mix of criticism, praise, and suggestions/preferences, and all I've really seemed to acquire out of it is a camper. As is, I don't intend to follow any kind of forum group. I've sent PMs around to people I've clicked with over time to survey their plans, only to get a small handful of replies so far. Granted some PMs I sent went to people that haven't posted in over 2 years.

Forum-goers are a minority in any game, I'd boldly claim. Though without knowing what unsavory elements displease you, I can only say they're probably everywhere anyway. Just hope the game doesn't force you to interact with people you dislike too often.

I'm honestly not sure that was true of FFXI. POSTERS, sure. But between alla and whatever that ifrit site was, I feel like nearly everyone was engaging with forums. You didn't really have much choice.

In games that are less "hardcore," for lack of a better word, it's probably going to be a small minority. If you don't NEED up-to-date information to be successful in your activities, you're less likely to visit forums. But what percentage of endgame raiders weren't using a site like Elitist Jerks? Or PVPers using ArenaJunkies? Probably very few.

Even if you split ye olde 500k users of FFXI to 250k English speakers, I'd be skeptical a fifth of that visited any kind of FFXI forum regularly. Yeah, I made friends here and interacted with some on Fairy/Sylph, but I can also think of a large number of people in the endgame shell I was in that didn't really know anything about the ins and outs of content where I'd basically played in-between ferrying info I'd gathered here and there. We had a JP guy that did similar from their side, too. But yeah, was basically explaining to them how to maximize Campaign progress when it was the thing, how lights worked in Abyssea and what dropped what. Indeed, stuff more readily found in a wiki nowadays, but even when those things weren't common, I still saw people lost in quests and the like. If I had to estimate my influence on people within the game, I'd probably worked with a few hundred over a decade. I'm not really counting random PUGing or just EXPing here, but just answering questions or maybe whipping something obscure up for a synth if needed.

Relative to XIV, I figure I'll do similar as I go along, but info sites are more common these days. As long as we don't have a slew of NMs with obscure pop conditions, finding a drop would just be as simple as going through a list. Maybe you'll have someone list possible mechanics or even link to a video if it's hard enough content, but I wouldn't necessarily call info-gatherers the hardcore raider types. The former can certainly be beneficial to the latter, but not everyone thrives on endgame drama, world firsts, or even some of the "site wars" I mentioned above. And I know it's dreadfully optimistic of me to believe the game will be better off the more people share, I'm not blind to the fact that if there's profit to be had in a secret, it'll be exploited as long as possible. And I guess these are the types I don't like helping because I get the vibe of being disposable if someone isn't what they need at that very moment. My last days of XI certainly saw that happen, which contributed to why I quit alongside lacking/poor content.

My THM has Ice Shard marked off on it's gathering log, so I found it somewhere... Gathering Log lists South Shroud and Western La Noscea. So it was probably Botanist in South Shroud.

Edit:
You can also get shards from Elemental enemies.

Not to raise dead subtopic in the thread, but...

Low level nodes with Ice shards are available right outside the Central Shroud gate for botanists. Western La Noscea is for the entire zone, but you'd have to be 16+ Botanist or Miner to grab those, as of the end of Phase 3. South Shroud is also for the whole zone, but you'd have to be level 21+ miner or botanist.
