Civilization: Beyond EarthFollow

So, Civilization 6 came out last Friday but instead of Civ: 6 they're calling it Civ: Beyond Earth. It's pretty similar to Civ: 5, but takes place after the science victory of Civ: 5. I started on "Mercury" difficulty for my first play through on a medium sized world and was able to win with a Harmony victory not long after maxing the Harmony Affinity. My people of the Pan Asian Cooperative had, at this point, become some sort of alien-human hybrids and built a big sentient flower thing that united them all.

Or something.

Anyhoo, if you like Civilization 5, you'll like Beyond Earth. Diplomacy is pretty much the same, except you no longer get mad at historical figures as there are no more historical figures but instead "futuristic" heads of state that you don't care nearly as much about. Although it is amusing that the future "President" of America (the American Reclamation Corporation, or ARC) is a half mexican - half african-american woman who is a CEO & not a President.

Being able to yell at futuristic Ghandi would have been swell, but I'll have to wait for the mods I guess...

The Afinities seem neat, but I'm trying for a Purity play through the 2nd time around on a harder difficulty & finding it hard to "stick" with Purity. Each affinity seems to lead to new units too, which is kind of neat. Its the BE version of CIV 5's Idiologies, essentially.

The revamped Espionage mechanic improves upon Civ 5s and can even lead to a Domination victory without having to battle anyone by mounting Coups. So there's that too.

One more turn time now....

I pre-ordered it, installed it, and have spent maybe an hour playing. I'd like to play, I just don't have the time. I do know the gas stuff is annoying as hell. I assume there's some sort of immunity/clearing tech in the future? I'm not a fan of the explorer units having a limited number of excavation tools. Also, the restrictive starting area kind of forces you into picking a specific trait if you care whatsoever about your first city.

Well, Firaxis calls it a "Mind Flower", but ya.

Terraforming allows you to clear it. But if you go the Harmony route you don't need to.

They can be increased with virtues if you like, but Explorers become un-needed in the mid to late game so its up to you if you want to "waste" one on it.

Depending on the traits you pick at the start, the settling area can be expanded a bit. I haven't tried it though. My 2nd cities on both of my playthroughs got bigger than my initial city, but that really isn't an issue.

Going the Purity route really pisses of Harmony folks, especially when you kill Aliens FYI. Trying for a contact victory this time but don't really know what I'm doing, so may end up going for the Purity victory instead...

For the first time since I fired up Civ II and saw a black screen with five or six cleared tiles on it I'm on the fence about purchasing the game. I keep reading that it's just a Civ V mod that we're being charged 50 bucks for. I've also read that it's going to be a great game once all the dlc is published, in two years or so.

I need digg to purchase this game and review it for me.

Most importantly, is it better than Alpha Centauri?

Please don't go. The Drones need you. They look up to you.

2K games tend to drop pretty quickly in price. You might not be buying it for $4.99 any time soon but there's no reason to spend $50 on a game you're not confident about.

I'm totally going to get this game, but when it's on sale. My target price is probably $30 at the highest.

Assuming I remember the vid completely, TB says no, generally. It has its high points, but assuming it'll be as good as Civ AC is asking for disappointment. If you liked Civ 5 but want a sci fi setting, it's probably worth it.

I'm finding this strategy very attractive.

It's a lot of fun, haven't finished a game yet as I am wont to do, but have a couple games going simultaneously now. Siege worms are annoying as ****, but an early fence helps stave that threat off. I like the new science tree, more options is always nice. The affinity system isn't perfect but isn't bad. My main complaint at this point is how few Civs there are... 6 or 8 total at this point? Just makes me feel like the variety is lacking. Same with having 3 affinities... not many paths to victory from what I can tell.

I'll take your word for it, as that video is like an hour long. Smiley: lol

But yeah, something of that quality would be what would have gotten me to plop money down on it (or at least place it on a wish list for sometime in the near future...). I'll pass if it's just a mediocre Civ V spinoff.

Somebody talking about Warlock?

It is largely Civ 5 in space, but as I was stilling playing CIV 5 in between other games since it came out I'm ok with that. I got a pre-order on GMG & some other discount for $40. I think Brave New World was $30 & its different enough that I dont think the extra $10 is a rip off.

Each Affinity has 1, there's also a contact victory (think the Carl Sagan book/movie Contact), & Domination which is essentially the same as Civ 5's except your spies can help out by throwing coups.

Nope.

That's not really what Warlock is, it has some good innovation, like dual queues and interlinked specialized production areas. There also is significantly less of a tech tree.

This. I think I'm going to wait till the complete edition. I paid way too much for Civ V buying everything not on sale and one bit at a time. And I haven't even played it much since adding all the expansions so... yeah I can wait.

Brave new world really improved CIV 5, so you should play it more. The Polynesians & King Kamehameha with the ability to build Moais everywhere is worth the pricetag alone.

Yeah first I need to replace the RAM that fried 2 months ago... I just haven't been PC gaming much lately. Partially cause ennui of having to fix the thing has deterred me, and my ancient MMO gets me in it's clutches whenever I go to game on it.

But I have no doubt I'll fire it up once I get my RAM issue dealt with.
