Are you going to (or did you) avoid Besaid because of RPing?Follow

Just curious if anyone is going to or already chose not go on Besaid because its been voted the unooficial role playing server. I'm not avoiding it as I was on it in open beta and it seemed fine. I'm curious if anyone will be avoiding it though. I'm not a RPer. (I won't take the extra time/effort to talk like that, but if someone else wants to I don't care.)

Personally I chose it because it's the unoficial RP server as I am looking for a new experience in MMOs.

I doubt there will be any answers stating they are avoiding this server because of RP as these people most probably won't be looking into this forum!

I've already seen a few comments made by people who avoided Besaid for just that reason. I think their decision to leave is a great thing though - it means one less person to make snarky, judgmental comments both in-game and on the message board.

Although, to be perfectly honest, I've been doing this for ten years or more now, and I really haven't been bothered all that much inside the game. I think maybe twice some wiseguys decided to interrupt guild meetings over the years, but other than that I've found the vast majority of players to be tolerant and understanding.

I think part of why some people might avoid it is because they feel like the RPers might be the judgmental ones. The one FFXI friend that I'd gotten in touch with was worried about Besaid being the RP server, but I told him it'd be fine, nobody's going to force anything on anyone and it's not like the RPC would be avoiding the non-RP players or anything, it's just that a minority of the players on the server enjoy RPing and so will be.

Personally I'd gone Besaid in OB just because, but the RPC going there honestly makes me feel better about the decision because someone who cares enough about their char to RP would presumably be a good player (as in not a jerk or whatever, not that RPing instills skill at playing ^^).

I went to Besaid because it was in fact voted the be the "Unofficial Roleplaying" server. I read about the vote as I was still attempting to get my Open Beta key.

I'm not sure how anyone can hold distaste for Roleplayers to begin with. Considering they tend to merely add to the atmosphere rather than shouting at the top of their lungs about having "big DEE PEE ES" all the time. Eh, granted each side has their own stereotype of each other, but it just seems to be a silly little slap fight back and forth.

I think most of those people that would actively avoid roleplay servers are those that don't understand the mechanics and where it stems from, mainly the want to use their literary skills to improve and expand upon an already impressive universe created by the developers. Those Roleplayers that are adverse to non-roleplayers tend to be ones that have been harassed enough to not trust those that do not see their point of view on the matter.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you there, people who actively avoid RP most probably are some of the best at understanding the game mechanics. The problem is that these people, along with the majority of players (me included sometimes) forget about the whole RP part of MMORPG. People just want to either have fun or have the best character/equipment possible and completly disregard the Background History of the world/game.

I agree with Hugus, it's not that they don't get the mechanics they just want to play the game... and not be part of the world.

I think he meant the mechanics of roleplaying rather than gameplay. Also, there's no forced disconnect between being a numbers monkey and a RPer, just a lot of people tend to enjoy either one or the other. Sorta like beer and wine. I like both (in both cases).

On topic:

I rolled here partially because I'd heard the RPC was coming here. I don't intend to RP myself (I've found that MMO-based RP feels way too disjointed and stiff for me to enjoy it; plus typing that much is a pain in the rear), but I enjoy the atmosphere it lends the world. Also, I'm a RP nerd and I enjoy hanging out with other RP nerds. Birds of a feather and all that jazz.

I don't see what the problem is.

I'm sure there is plenty of RP players on other servers so I don't think it matters.

I honestly prefer the roleplaying community because it usually has nicer people. I've played, at the very least, five MMO's and I actively seek out these servers for that reason. RPer's have no problem stopping to answer a question or group with you. And their name choices are usually a lot less annoying, as is their typing abilities.

~ As unofficial it may be, its safe to assume that a very small percentage of people actually visit here; which explains why I have yet to see any RP at all on the server. I guess you have to join an RP LS, which could be said about any server... so I think the entire idea is moot anyhow.

Our linkshell ended up here more or less because we just did a vote, and people voted against other servers as opposed to specifically *for* this one.

I will say this though - there are some mean people already. My friends and I were getting together for our guildleves and some idiot was making some ignorant comments to the RP folks who were just having fun and not really bothering anyone. I was a little annoyed with him, so I ended up in a shouting match (that's how I roleplay - as a raving lunatic in shout fights for the forces of good. Doesn't count? Oh well. I tried!) and he eventually quieted.

I dunno - I think there are a lot of folks who don't even realize it's the unofficial RP server because they don't even know places like Zam exist.

I am on this server. Yesterday when shopping in the markets I came across two played freaked cybering >< horrible! Leave that for your ims. I just left the area. Was thinking about sending a GM on them but really didn't want to bother with it.

Yuck

What were their names? Those people should not be taken as representative to the RP community, I doubt they even are RP'ers.

In the future, feel free to report them to a GM. I'm no expert on the ToS but I'm pretty sure they'd crack down on something like that. As stated by the above poster, that does not represent the overall RP community at all.

I would think anyone who takes time to even interact with us will find that we are a very friendly group of people (Most of us, at least.) We are just as much in the game for the game itself, as we are for RP. Think of it as getting as much out of it as possible, as well as exercising our imagination (It is the most profound and fun thing to start working on a character's background and personality, and watch it discover itself from foundation to finished product.), In many cases, if you spot some of us RP'ing in /say, you may think to come over and join in on it a bit (many do), often asking us for some information relevant to the actual gameplay in character, we will gladly talk right back to you and help you out, but if you ask us a question out of character, we will still gladly help you, we don't expect you to RP on besaid, we won't pull you in to it at all. Things like cybering are looked down upon in the RPC community, and you will not see our members partaking in such acts. The majority of RP takes place in more private chats, such as /l or /p. There are a very large number of RP'ers, and you have probably interacted or seen at least 20 of them around the server and not even known.

Egh. While it may be an RP server, keep in mind that a majority of RPers, and those at the RPC do not condone that kind of activity. Roleplaying doesn't equal smut-writing.

lol I'm not avoiding this server. even thow my main char. will be on Palamecia because thats where some friends from FFXI already are, I'm thinking of makeing a second char. for this server just for the RP. I dint do any RP on 11 but I am a former D&D player from long before MMORPG's. and besides it sounds like a fun active server

I haven't even really seen all that much RPing anyway (perhaps it is done within LS), and I don't plan to RP, but I chose Besaid because it simply seemed like it has a very active community.

I am on Besaid, and I honestly haven't even run into a single Role Player. I have seen a few chatting in the leve area, but honestly it isn't adding / removing anything to gameplay for me. Plenty of non-roleplayers on besaid.

RP servers are usually more populated and the general population is a lot nicer and mature, found this to be most true in Lotro, and their unoffical RP server. Granted you get the people that there only goal is to ruin RP as well.

I rolled here and I look forward to getting to know all of you!

I had my first RP run in yesterday. I was synthing away in the ARM guild and these two players just kept blabbing on about something filling up my log, I couldn't avoid it.

It was driving me nuts because it was such a boring conversation. It dragged on until one of them said "well, I'd best get back to training." to which I could not keep quiet any longer replied, "YES, MORE HAMMERING LESS YAMMERING." Lame, to be sure, but he broke character and said "QQ."

QQ indeed.

Filling up your log? Your journal?

Hell, I would have considered it to be an IC comment and would have responded properly.

Certainly would damage any prospects of me RPing with that guy myself. Typically decent RP-ing folk don't force it on others. Business is conducted through /tells and Party and is usually done quickly. Afterall, we need the support of others for crafting just like anyone else.

No, the combat/chat/synthesis results/etc log. My eyeballs are forced there during crafting.

Which is what I was expecting. I wasn't (really) trying to be a douche I was just annoyed. D:

Ah, I see. this is where chat tabs and crap will be good. Do synthesis results show up on the battle tab?

I'm sure, tempers flare over various things and no one is in the right or wrong in any scenario.

I've always enjoyed RP'ing, whether on a forum or in an MMORPG. I never tried it in FFXI, however when the PS3 release of XIV rolls around I hope the RP community will still be lively. I also hope it will conglomerate in one place so I know where to join up.

If anything I'm really looking forward to that aspect of FFXIV. So I doubt I'd avoid Besaid if it did turn out to be the unofficial RP server.
