Tanking basics for a noob monk tank pleaseFollow

After a lifetime of squishies I decided to make a tank, partly as a change from healing, partly to see things from the other side, and partly to get VIP treatment in the dungeon queue.

Now I know I'm not the best tank ever, in fact I really have little idea what I'm doing, so I could use some tips.on basic tanking. As I understand it, the main job is to choose what to agro and then hold that agro while everyone else blows holes in the mob, so that's basically what I do.

One of the things I don't understand is why everyone else seems so keen on doing my job for me. I mean if the pally had wanted to be the tank, why didn't he queue as one? If the warlock wants to run ahead of me and pull stuff, why did he opt for a class that dies so fast? I do begin to understand why there's such a tank shortage, and why so many of them are terrible. If everyone else runs into the mobs, pulls adds into the boss fight, you get the blame.

Just yesterday I got kicked from a group that had managed to wipe a dungeon I had done plenty of times before with no trouble. They just would not let me do the pulling, and then they blamed me when they were killed by mobs I hadn't pulled while I was in another part of the room fighting something else. That really irritated me for the five seconds I waited in the queue to get another dungeon, I can tell you.

There's not much you can do about that other than queue with friends only. People running ahead and pulling for you will be a fact of tanking life. Find a friendly healer to queue with so that the lives of those ninja pullers is mercifully(for you) short.

As Pold said, unfortunately as a tank there really isn't much you can do. Whenever I tank on any of my toons if another player wants to pull mobs, then they're welcome to tank them, and I mention as such. Let them die, I say. It's not my job to help idiots. It's one thing if a group is pulled by accident (standing too close, accidental tab target, etc), then I will take the time to taunt and get aggro on me, but if they're blatantly running ahead to pull more mobs, then they're the ones tanking them.

If your group doesn't like it and you've mentioned to them that they're welcome to tank the dungeon if they want to keep pulling, because face it (just like you said), you're a tank... queues aren't that long and you'll survive if you're kicked or leave. I say laugh in their faces for blaming you and requeue =)

Also, it's one thing if you're learning. People usually go easy on tanks learning if they're not douches, but everyone seems to expect that people know what they're doing, which is stupid so early in the expac.

Thanks for the comments. I'm feeling a little more confident in my tanking now.

yea Voice up in groups. As I leveled my Monk Tank I had many groups like this. You either tell them what is up, or you take the "Abuse."

If you do not know the dungeon, because most of the lower ones have changed... a lot. Let them know. Ask at bosses too. The overly exited DPS need to be put in place. You'r queues will be Instant-15min (Mine got longer the higher I leveled o.O), their's is 15min++++++++. No need to rush because you all of a sudden made it finally into a dungeon lol

If you need Monk Tanking tips: The brew you toss (yea I don't memorize abilities names lol), the AoE one, toss 1-2 of them. Use it to pull packs. It is a high threat creator. Dizziling (sp) Brew does a Cone shape forward, so position yourself to use that, then a Breath of fire or 2, and you should have aggro/hate for the fight. You have Provoke and the Charge one when a DPS decides to go nuts and wishes to die.
