Lowb Warlock PvP (wrong subforum?)Follow

#1 Nov 22 2012 at 9:35 PM Rating: Decent
Sorry if I should be posting this under the PvP subforum, and the mod can move it there if s/he so chooses, but to my thinking it relates more to lock spec than to PvP.

I've got a brand new lock who's currently 6 and about to hit 7. She's farming copper for the AH and cloth for her own gear through tailoring. At 10, I plan to have her go Affliction (yes, Affliction) and rotate BGs, one WG and then one AB, until she has farmed enough honor for the clothie honor shoulders and the Grand Staff of Jordan. With her AH sales she'll finance purchases of gear, rumsey's, scrolls and potions, that sort of stuff, from the AH so that she can be as close to BoA in her gear as her gold level permits. Then she retires to being a farming and AH toon and I roll a brand new spriest or dpriest to have both looms and some gold right from level 1, xp 0.

What I wanna ask about is my choice to try Affliction in lowb BGs. My thought is to stay at least 40 yards away from the action and cast DOTs on everything in sight. If trouble gets within 30 yards, I move 100 yards away and just run like an absolute ****** every time meelee or a hunter comes within 30 yards. I figure, that way, an Affliction lock can do very well for herself in lowb BGs. What do you think?

I've played my share of low level PvP on my Warlock alt.

There's one thing you need to know about the Warlock: It's a late bloomer. Where other classes might feel whole-ish early on, the Warlock doesn't really shine until you get way up in the levels. You simply lack too many abilities early on to perform as well as other classes. You lack the escape options of the Mage and the self-healing of the Priest, but you are just as squishy as them. You also have less burst than both of those classes. You have three or four spells and a minion. That's it. If you get jumped, you die. If your target fights back, you die.

There's also one thing you need to know, accept and embrace if you don't want to turn insane in there: Rogues and Warriors will kill you. Not can, not might, they will. Doesn't matter if you open up the fight from 30 yards away, they just need to get within melee range and you die instantly. Hunters are the same, but they can do it from 30 yards away. I've been one-shot by Aimed Shot more times than I can count - and that's with heirloom gear on.

Honestly? I did not find lowbie PvP enjoyable at all. People have no idea what they're doing and Rogues/Warriors just wtfstomp anything in sight. As a Warlock, you really don't have a lot of options and therefore not a lot of chances either. Your best bet is to go with the group and pray that the enemy will go for someone else while you throw around Shadow Bolts. Calling it underwhelming would be an understatement.

High level PvP is much more fun for the Warlock because you have all kinds of cool spells at that point.

I spent some thinking about what you said and have decided to shelve my idea of making my lock a pvp toon right at 10. She's 10 right now and I plan on making her a mining-AH toon to raise cash for other toons, as well as a tailoring-crafting toon to make gear for fellow clothies. She's gotten some nice green drops from mobs that I can use to outfit a warrior, a pally or a rogue. So I'm probably going to roll a spriest or dpriest and see how PvP goes on one of those. Sound good?

You can make your Lock work in low level PvP, but not as Affliction. You simply don't deal enough damage for it to be worth it. Put up DoTs and run away? The enemy will just run away, wait to leave combat and regenerate health faster than your DoTs steal it.

If you really want to take your Lock into low level PvP, go Demonology, gear up like a mad man and use your Imp. He'll chuck fireballs at people like crazy and they'll hurt like hell. You get more burst and survivability from Metamorphosis, which is available at level 10 once you choose Demonology.

Still, you will die a lot. I took my Monk into Warsong Gulch and because Hunters could kite me, Priests could bubble up, Shaman could out-heal me and everyone else could out-damage me, I ended up focus firing Warlocks. Affliction, Demonology, Destruction, it didn't matter. I'd roll up to them (literally, using Roll) and kill them before they could kill me.

Late bloomers are a pain in the *** to play early on. And Rogues, Shaman, Hunters and Warriors are still OP as sh*t in the first PvP bracket. Was two-shot by a Rogue through 63% damage mitigation (resilience + tanking stance + armor). Yay. Smiley: rolleyes

Aimed shot is lol in lowbie PvP. I love it, keep re-roll a hunter for that reason. :P

Healing in PvP is my fav though. I enjoy it while leveling and at the cap. Can be OP at lower levels, haven't capped a PvP healer yet, druid heals but I don't PvP with him.

Bringing priest up next and expect to BG a lot on the way.

Most of these comments are not at all related to the OPs question.

Yeah, as of right now locks are very under-represented in PvP especially in low tiers. If you do roll lock and plan to do low level battlegrounds I advise you to stay with your group and rely on your utility more than your damage.

That means Chain CC'ing and silencing. Besides that, dying alot as a lock is inevitable no matter what you do in low BGs.

I suggest playing destruction with heirlooms as an alternative. That way you'd be able to 1 shot players with chaos bolt (and collect some tears of your own) to even out the playing field + you'll still retain the basic lock utility you need. Hope this helps.

Er, no they're not. Check your sources again. Locks, mages, spriests, and warriors are the current kings of being OP as hell.

I've had a lock two shot me. Seriously. At 60% resil (plus 15% damage reduction from Iron Hawk).

I know, right? They've both been OP since the inception of PvP, so we should probably rethink what to call them.

Hunters with the Stampede bug? OP.

Warriors doing 330k damage in 2 GCDs? Meh, just warriors.

What he said.

Really unless you're decked out in heirlooms you're probably better off avoiding PvP altogether until like the 40s or something. One-shot deaths are annoying as heck. I remember being exceptionally squishy before getting my blueberry's bubble too. You guys still get that at 20-ish?

This was my favorite part of lock PvP. You get a crapload of utility spells, and can be an annoying bugger if you make use of them (assuming you can keep track of them all of course...). Between dots and CC holding a node until help could arrive was something that seemed like a snap as well, lock was quite good at stalling people. AoE stun was a great way to muck up a group so someone could add a finishing blow.

Anywho, just reminiscing. No clue if any of it is still relevant, but it all sounds familiar. Smiley: rolleyes
