No Onboard Video -> Screen BlankFollow

#1 Nov 10 2011 at 6:20 PM Rating: Decent
Hi everyone.

I have an HP Pavilion 7955 (1.6GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD) whose graphics card (TNT2) I'm trying to upgrade to a Geforce4 MX440 8x.

Everything works fine when the TNT2 is in the AGP slot. When I replace it with the Geforce4, the computer gives me beeping noises on startup and gives me a blank screen. It won't even display the BIOS's POST, and the monitor's LED flashes as if it isn't even receiving a signal. When I put the TNT2 back in, all is well.

I know it's not the Geforce4, as it works fine on another machine.

The motherboard doesn't have on-board video, so there's no way for me to troubleshoot this. Does anyone know what's going on? Help!

With a 440, I'm guessing that it doesn't have additional power ports on the video card that need power pliugged into, but you may want to check. Some of them did have 4 pin MOLEX power sockets, and if it has one, it will need to be powered to operate.

Your bigger problem is the Pavilion 7955 has an AGP 4x slot, if that really is an AGP8x MX440, which there were a few of them, then it isn't going to work with that computer.

To be honest, that computer setup is obsolete. You should be able to find a substantial and significant used upgrade computer for around $100 somewhere that at least has a PCI express slot for a video card and will be at least 3 years newer. For example I happen to know for a fact you can purchase a pentium D gateway E6500D with a geforce 6600GT PCI express video card in it from certain Washington State Government Surplus Online Auctions for between $50 and $100. If nothing else, if you haven't replaced the hard drive in that computer it will be failing sooner rather than later simply due to bearing age.

I thought 8x cards were backwards compatible with 4x ports?

Regardless, this was just to try to get something to work with existing parts. I was more interested in *why* it wasn't working than anything else.

So far, the card-port version is the only reasonable hypothesis.

Thank you for the quick reply =)

Some cards are, others aren't. It really depends on whether the card manufacturer included the capability in that version of the card. Others will just outright fail if they don't get the expected 8X signal.

After checking the card with various other setups, I believe you're right. The AGP 4x port on the Asus P4B-LA (Amazon) motherboard simply may not support 8x cards, or this particular 8x card may not be backwards compatible with the 4x port.

Thanks for your time!
