Sometime last year I downloaded an update and when it rebooted it froze up. Reset it and when it powered back on it came back with red lights. I then placed it in my closet and it has set there ever since. But now I need it to play Skyrim.

I have seen some repair guides online to fix this problem but they aren't free and I'm not sure they are legit. Which is my real question. Can anyone reccommend one of these guides from personal experience.

My warranty is expired so I am not really concerned with that part of it.

Red ring of doom indicates a hardware failure somewhere on the motherboard. Sometimes you can fix it with this method: http://www.instructables.com/id/Fix-the-Red-Ring-of-Deathwithout-towels/?ALLSTEPS

Other methods include bakeing the xbox motherboard in the oven to reflow the soldier joints, just adding extra cooling, or getting a replacement motherboard.
