I need a computer for my DIY Surveillance System?Follow

Here is my hardware I want to use at the moment:

10 Generic USB Mic+Webcams
10 Port Powered USB HUB
A buttload of USB extension cables
I havent decided on the software yet, but it may be iSpy or YAWCAM

As for the computer, I honestly do now know what I should be looking for. A cheap prebuilt one is nice, but I was looking forward to build my own. The last computer I built had:

AMD Phenom 2 x6
4GB DDR3
Radeon HD 4890
for $280 on black friday.

Obviously that is my gaming rig, my parents own a store in CA and I want to set up a cheap surveillance system for them. The features I'm looking for in the system goes for $500-$2000 on average and I'm not looking forward to paying that much. The cameras and hub already cost me $170 even in a bulk order.

So this is the first time i'm looking forward to build a computer not bent on the best gaming performance. I'm looking for an extremely cheap build that would be able to do motion detection and sound detection for 10 cameras and stuff like that.

I'm looking to have 2 2TB Drives and a SSD Boot drive in read only mode. I'm not looking forward to spending more than $300 for this computer, I just need a recommendation for CPU and RAM. Motherboard is usually something I can find on my own. GPU, I dont think a system like this is very GPU intensive. Assume I already have an ATX case, 480 watt PSU 20+4, DVD Drives, Floppies and all that.

Any other tips on those who already have one would be gladly appreciated.

Just the two 2TB drives are going to cost more than 300. A small SSD drive just for the OS and other software will run you another 150+. You picked a bad time to be buying hard drives.

Honestly, if you are going to be using this only for surveillance, you are better off going with something like this.

While a computer will be nice, the price of setting one up, including all the USB cables and such, will run you much higher.

But as Turin said, you won't get those 3 harddrives for less than $300 alone, not even talking about the rest of the computer.

the flooding in Thailand drove hard drive prices through the roof. what was once a $70 drive now costs at a minimum $250 per drive.
