Bad Framerate at Native ResolutionFollow

#1 Feb 01 2012 at 10:19 AM Rating: Decent
I just came back to this game after a few months off, in that time I've upgraded my PC with a new graphics card and monitor. My old PC ran FF:XIV fine at its native resolution, my new monitor is 1920x1080 and when I try to run it at that it just lags. I'm currently running it in windowed mode at like 1200xwhatever resolution and it runs fine without any lag at all, but I'd like to play it at max resolution. Any ideas why it lags? :( My card is a GTX 460 I have dual monitors too, if that means anything.

Essentially, you have out monitiored your video card. Very large monitor area useses much more video horsepower than a smaller monitor. It essentially is almost an exponential progression. Two 24" monitors running in 1920 x 1080 for example would require at least two 460 GTX's in SLI mode to run at medium settings on maximum resolution for most higher end graphics games. Or a single 580 GTX. With one monitor, your one video card's full horsepower is devoted to that screen. With two, you divide that available processing power between both screens. If the new monitors are significantly larger and higher resolution than your old one, which it sounds like they almost certanly are, they require more than your present video card solution can provide.

I'd figure out exactly which make and model of video card you have, and see if I could find a matching second video card (identical lot numbers if possible) and assuming you have a reasonabnly robust power supply and a motherboard that can take it, run two video cards in SLI mode. That or upgrade your primary video card.

Thanks for the quick response. I don't really use the secondary monitor all that much, it was just a "oh, well I guess I could watch TV on it" kinda thing. I didn't know about the power situation. I just now disabled my secondary monitor and tried FF:XIV out at max resolution and it ran fine. It's not much of a hassle to enable/disable the other monitor whenever I wanna play, I play most games in windowed mode nowadays anyway. Thanks again for your help!
