Here is the revised and updated Hunting Grounds, after several months of neglect and absence. I put it in a new format to ease the strain of printers, and to save a few reams of paper. A goal is to eventually merge Anthologies and this guide, to offer a comprehensive leveling guide by area.

Thanks to all the Beastmaster, both past and present, who contributed to this guide. Without your information, this project would not be reality!

Happy Hunting!

---Levels 1-9---

Levels 1-9
Beastmaster gains:
Level 1 Job Ability: Two Hour – Familiar
Level 1 Job Ability: Charm
Level 1 Pet Command: Fight

At these levels, it is more efficient to solo as a melee class, and experiment with Charm. The Heel-Swap technique will become available at level 10, where fighting T+ mobs becomes more feasible. Have fun with these levels, and get excited, as a whole new job awaits your skill!

Nice, like the new format. The only thing that is a little tough for me is when you put multiple levels on a training ground, like Carpenter's landing. It'd be easier to put the lvl 20-24 mobs in one section then later put the 29 mobs and prey, would prevent confusion. But I'm gettin bst up, and this'll help loads.

Looks good, Durginn, much cleaner formatting than the former Hunting Grounds ^^ I have a question... is it alright if I start fiddling with formatting for the merger? Once I get something put together I can send it to you via PM so you can take a look at it and make suggestions. Also, I'd like to ask permission to switch up the level splits on the last 15 levels to match the Anthologies, since it's difficult for me to change separate threads that are already split into the 5 level categories of 61-65, 66-70, and 71-75. Thanks, and a cookie and a glomp for you ^^

*hits Durg with a cookiefied glomp*

Edit: Actually, if you could send a copy of The Hunting Grounds to me via e-mail so that the formatting will be built-in, that would be a great help. I feel obliged to look at the formatting first since you just finished with an entire revision, you should take a little break, no?

Nope, your entire Journal needs to remain intact, all that information will still be used. Most likely the merger will consist of having the links to Anthology threads paired with Hunting Ground entries, so that people can get an at-glance, number-based look at an area, then hit the link for a more detailed explanation.

Camp: I-9 on the map that leads to Dragon's Aery. Drag a Blood Ball here from the Ancient Goobbue area and use it as your main pet; use one of the local Saplings to pull while the leech regenerates.

Probably you could also do this at 74 with a Korrigan as your main pet, though you'll have to deal with more mischarms while swapping pets.

MOBS TO FIGHT: Tormentors (73-77)

This camp isn't for fast exp, its more for farming eyes for hakutaku eye cluster. But its nice to get some xp while you farm for items. At 73, very few Million Eyes will con EM so treat your EM million eyes like gold.

EDIT: Bleh, I messed up. The mobs to fight should be:

MOBS TO FIGHT: Million Eyes (73-77)
So you do EM million eyes vs. EM-T million eyes. The Puck vs. Tormentors is in a different section of den of rancor.

goobue and steelshell can also be done from 72-75, you rake in some nice gil, i didn't mind doing this at all, it's a bit slower but still pretty fast.

you can use flys or korrigan for pets.

fight elder goobue or steelshell.

you may need to let the first pet fight alone on goobue then swap and finish it melee with 2nd pet, you can still get chain 3 this way if you get it down.

once you hit 74 the even match korrigans should be good enough to take down a elder goobue without a swap, with your help and dia II.

usually i don't have a problem, if you do see your pet isn't going to make it, a blink is plenty for new pet to take hate off you.

I just made the run through the "****" levels, 31-34 and finally DINGed 35 BST. I went to spots that, according to the leveling guide, were good spots for that level. However, I did run into some problems that I feel need to be addressed. Mind you, these are all based on my observations.

Lv. 32 - Eastern Altepa Desert - I wanted to charm spiders and go after Goblin's pet spiders. Sure the exp is GREAT, however, whenever I would run into trouble and needed to find another pet on the fly, most of the spiders I would run up to would con Tough. If I was lucky enough to land charm on the Tough mob, and have it finish the Gob's pet spider, I'd still get full 200xp. However, if I failed the charm, I would get double team beaten down to death by spiders. I would recommend BSTs not to try doing this until Lv. 33 when more spiders will con DC and EM. (There will still be some T spiders, but nowhere near as many as before)

So instead, I did this....

Lv. 31-32 - Maze of Shakhrami (from Buburimu Peninsula zone)
Pets to charm: Ancient Bats, Caterchipillar
Mobs to fight: Goblins (Furrier, Pathfinder, Shaman, Smithy)
Notes: When you first zone into the maze from Bubu, charm a pet and fight your way to the first large room where the goblins spawn. (the pets are aggro, so that's why you'll have to fight your way to the camp) Once at camp, there are 4 Goblins that spawn in the first large room, along with a multitude of pets. At 31, the goblins mostly con Tough, with occasional Even Match so the exp is good. At 32, the gobs con mostly Even Match, with some DC and an occasional T in there, making the exp a little slower, but still doable, and much safer. Just be wary of your surroundings, watch for pet pops that may aggro you, and use the 3 tunnels that lead/exit in and out of the first large room to your advantage.

Hate doing this in multiple posts, sorry. I'll keep the rest on this post.

Lv. 33 - Gusgen Mines - The Myconid funguar pets conned DC to me at 33, which was fine. The problem was the Gallinippers (fly) At 33, they mostly conned Tough, with a rare Even Match amongst the group, so whenever I ran through the room needing a pet on the fly, and coulding find one......I was pretty much SOL and dead.

So at 33, I went to Bibiki Bay, doing Eft vs. Eft. At 33, they were mostly T, with some EM in the mix. However, Eft are very easy to charm, so if you need to go T Eft vs. T Eft, by all means do it. At 34, more Eft will con EM, with some DC, but there will still be enough T Eft to go around. You can also, if you wish, begin going after Dhalmels. This is what got me to 35 yesterday. WOOT!

Now, for my last rant....

Lv. 35 - Yuhtunga Jungle - The camp at H7 is GREAT. Once you have leave, the 2 lizzies that hang in the dead end tunnel are perfect pets! HOWEVER! I don't know if this was SE's doing or what not, but the Gobs that spawned in the open area mostly conned DC, some EM, and a RARE (yes, RARE) T Goblin. Needless to say, the exp SUCKED.

What I'm doing now.....

Lv. 35 - Bibiki Bay - Eft, Dhalmel, Hare vs. Ravens
This is GREAT exp. Use 2-3 pets to wear down the Ravens, then Leave and finish the mob.

I'll try out Gusgen Mines at 35 and see how it is. Should be a lot better now that the fly pets should all con Even Match

Ewwwwww.... 44-45, kill Workers? Nooo... First of all, they are more EM than Tough. Second, parties take MANY of em. These aren't reliable...

45, Charm Killer Mushrooms VS Scorpions (many times they are taken though.) or other Killer Mushrooms... These don't aggro, but link, so play smart if you're doing Shroom VS Shroom. If no one is killing scorps, drag 2 shrooms to the scorp room. The shroooms move back slowly so don't worry. And if a party takes one, just laugh at em cuz Shrooms will 0wn em.

62+ Kuftul Tunnel
Charm: Crabs and lizards
Fight: Spiders

I have found this place to be good less farmers than the tree, its a lil bit of work to get the mobs over the hill where there is a Sabotender but you can fight in the main room and no one will really bother you unless Amemet is going to pop when they kill the lizards. Just send that pt of gil sellers a /tell and they useually leave a few lizards up for you to use or just use a crab.
im only 62 now so i would assume that this is good for solo until 63/64 maybe 65 for farming and slow xp on these mobs. You could go farther in and use spiders on spiders maybe even start raptor's. Well i hardly see anyone in this area anymore so i guess we can take it over^^*

Hope this helps

I had a similar issue at level 33. Even Match or Decent Challenge flies were kinda hard to find at this level... so I just used Myconids instead and had no problems. I did have a few close calls though when the bomb simply wouldn't blow up and had to scramble to find another pet. :p

Great job on the guide!!!! It'll definitely come in handy ^^

Your gusgen mines experience will be diffrent from normal XPing... when you fight Bombs...charming T is gonna be ok...the XP is still gonna be equally as sweet... Try to charm the ones that are low evasion...Those are only a level above, 2 at most, so the XP will be better than charming a T+. You'll do the same thing in Garlaige fighting Hellmines at higher levels.

I'm doing Hares vs. Tigers exclusively here at 61. EXP takes a significant hit, because there are no more 200 EXP tough tigers, and some of the tigers are EM now. Still getting about 2k an hour exp wise, and also making a fair amount of money turning in fangs for Sandy fame and AHing the hides and the occasional snow lily (it's used for one of the later CoP missions...I get about 12k apiece for them ^_^ ).

I know what you mean. When I was 34 BST in Bibiki Bay, there were times I had to use Tough Efts on other Tough Efts. I'm not sure if some mobs are more susceptible to charm or what not. I'm the kind of person that would rather not take a chance unless I absolutely had no choice.

But I guess now I should look for those "low evasion" mobs, then again, I don't melee with my pet all that often and my axe skill isn't capped. Guess I should melee a little bit and cap my axe skill to get a more accurate read on mobs.

Did you stay by the Outpost????

The best thing to do for these levels is to go down into the tunnel behind the OP. There will be non-agro Soldier Crawlers and Goblins all through out the tunnels, and use the crawlers to tear up the goblins, not use Opo-Opos. I only charmed Opo-opo for some fun at high levels going back to that area.

I only mention it because the guide says it is a viable option. In hindsight the location behind the outpost might have been better, but I had already fallen down into the valley and i was too lazy to fight my way back around. Don't get me wrong, a DC opo will absolutely tear up a Tough Sahagin, I only wish they were easier to charm, and I thought that the guide should include a warning that they are a bit difficult to land a consistent charm on ^^;

NOTES:
Examining the site http://ffxi-atlas.com/ you Enter Oldton, and then make your way to J-1. From there enter Newton, Invis up, and head on in. Nothing I found Agroes to sound here.

There are 2 potential camps here that I found. One at F-6, and 1 at I-6.

Pull Bugbear Trashmen (65-67), and Assorted Moblins.
The Bugbears up here are Hard Hitting Monk types, and so Meleeing them is dangerous. They take 2-3 pet swaps just due to their large HP pool. they drop a Rare/EX Sylvan Stone you can trade to TwinkBrix for the ENM 60 Key Item.

The Moblins up here are a lot easier than their Bugbear Cousins. They take only 1-2 pet swaps, and can be meleed for full XP without too much risk. They don't drop bombs, but they have some moves that backfire, and I guarantee a good chuckle :D.

I didnt see this mentioned anywhere but if your a decent way into CoP you can exp in lvl capped areas like riverine site A1 at lvl 40 and above. Its not the greatest place, but I've been to worse. Birds are easy to charm and con between DC to T with alot of EM, the trap things are hard to charm and have AOE sleep which can get you killed fast. Hippographs are the best to fight, mostly T and some EM. Firedrakes are T further in but are much harder then thier con, however they do drop wyvern skins, 50-70k on my server, so it may or may not be worth the risk to try killing some of those.

Thanks for all the effort compiling and awesome guide!! Congratulations!!

Having just got to BST27, I'd like to amend the levelling info for Korroloka tunnel:

I got from 25 to 27 in Korroloka, soloing, charming seeker bats and fighting seeker bats and worms. I do so love it when a DC worm pops right next to an EM one - charm it, set it on the other, retire to a safe distance and take a rest while they duke it out ^^ Just hope that the pet doesn't survive though, I've had that happen too and had to zone to release it!

At 26 and above I started setting EM seeker bats on T Combats - make sure you pick a combat that doesn't have high Eva though, and having a second EM seeker bat located is handy too, just be aware that any other bat near the Combat WILL link in so clear the area first!

At 27 I managed to charm a DC jelly on a few occasions - every single time it took 2 or 3 recasts to charm it, but it was worthwhile and stayed charmed till it died! Jellys do some awesome damage!

I could probably stay in korroloka till I hit 30, but its getting a bit monotonous now, so I'll probably look for a challenge somewhere else and then come back to it later.
Hope this helps someone ^^

hey, thanks for the awesome guides durginn, they have been my bible since like level 10 XD.

But anyway, i found an awesome spot that you might want to consider adding in the next update or version.

STARTING AT LVL 46, you can go to Garlaige Citadel and go just past the banishing gate to use Citadel bats vs the skeles there (i think they are fallen soldiers). There are a few problems with this spot though... everything is aggro. The strategy is to stay just on the other side of the door for camp, and make sure your hp is full! then, find an EM bat (if there isnt one near the camp, you can sneak around the area to find one, but beware of aggro by low hp!!). All of you who have exped in qufim know that triple bat vs skele is a joke to say the least.

For advanced strategy and notes: If you pull the skele too close to the door, he can hit mages on the other side with AOE, and if its the drain one you can get screwed, so leave yourself some space. Also, the skeles (especially mages) seem to be resistant to ice spells (i.e. paralyze) but slow lands about 3/4 of the time for a taru. Bats aggro about 10 seconds after you release them, but if you stay near the door they wont link, so all you have to do is make sure they dont have tp at the close of the fight. After releasing your pet and finishing the mob, recharm your bat and dump him far enough from the door that he wont aggro, but if you get to close to the opposite wall and have low hp, the skeles can aggrop you, so be careful (if you are really scared of skele aggro, you can recharm then use sneak and then release, always staying near the door). And last but not least, charm makes sneak wear off, but fight and heel and sic do not, so if you are scared of aggro from nearby bats; charm a bat, use sneak, then pull your skele friend, then start fighting.

Heres a bad note XD : sometimes there are no EM bats, so you have to wait for someone to kill them, leave, or use T vs T!!

FINAL NOTE: despite all of the dangers i listed here, i have never died in like 3 days of light play, and im a taru (mind you i've had some really close calls XD)

Lv 38 - 39 Attohwa Chasm:
Mobs found in I-9 when you first get there:
EP & DC Gallnipper * 5
EP & DC Goblin * 3
DC & EM Antlion * 4
T, VT, IT Doom scorpion * 2

Currently I have found that better XP in I-9 from doing the following:

First, Come in and clear out the goblins because usually they get in the way and I died only because one walked in on me while fighting somehting else.

Next, grab a pet and fight a Doom Scorpion. If you have DC pets, I like to save the EM pet for a finisher, to insure that its easier to make your new pet grab hate. You can get 200XP from a scrop even if you do not Leave before the battle is finished many times.

Kill the 2 scorps, then go back and clear out the gobs. Repeat until this area becomes <too weak>.

Lv 39-41 In Yhoator Jungle:
Come in the north side of the area that spans H-8 and H-9.
Here you will find Yhoator wasps and Goblin Reapers on ledges as well as an anemone in a crack below. Sometimes you will see a Goblin Digger or a goblin pathfinder.

at 39 - 40 the wasps range between DC and EM, with the ocasional T at 39.
The Goblin Reapers range from T to VT, and a rare IT.

I prefer to stay on the west side of the crack. 3 goblin reapers spawn in this area, but far enough apart so that they will not link if you dont train them around. There are tons of bees, so you will have plenty of pets. Start from the north end, work to the south end of the west side, then by that time the northernmost gob on the west side will have respawned. Repeat to your hearts content.

Usually get 150 - 200 xp, many times 250 Xp. Try to stay far away from the gobs as you are chipping away at them as sometimes they will explode at full health and take out a considerable amount of your life.

You can also come around up the east side of the crack once you get to the south end of the area. There are also 3 goblin reapers and several bees here. The issue with that side is that there is a goblin pathfinder with a pet bee, which can spell disaster if it links with the bees you use for pets. In addition, more rarely a goblin digger will walk through that area. The diggers are generally tougher than the reapers, but you can still kill them. Diggers however, do not stay near where they spawn and roam around, causing them to walk in on you when you are fighting something else. Rule for the east side = be careful.

This area is still not bad at 41, but I am into exploring new areas so decided to see what else I could find by then.

Level 35-36(37?) Lufaise Medows, Lake at (I-8)
Pets to Charm: Acrophies(33-36), Tavnazian Sheep(33-37)
Mobs to Fight: Orcs (Beastrider, Nightraider, Brawler, Impaler)(35-38)
notes: Camp is very dangerous, Acrophies tend to bunch together and a Lightning Elemental Spawns next to the lake. 'Camping' on the eastern most portion of the lake usually cuts down on Acrophies links, and Orcs tend to spawn farther south and west. I've had bad expierences with bugards, and gigas take too long to kill so I would suggest against either of these as mobs to hunt. if your here at 14:10, look north =3

.Currently here, so I do not know when the exp starts to drop off. I'm guessing 37, I suppose I will find out soon enough >.>

33-37: Bibiki Bay
PETS TO CHARM: Efts (33-36), Marine Dhalmels (33-37), Island Rarabs (34-38)
MOBS TO FIGHT: Efts, (33-36), Marine Dhalmels (33-37), Ravens (36-39), Goblins [Shaman, Smithy] (34-36)
NOTES:
33, Camp from entrance to dock. Use Efts or Dhalmels vs. Efts, Dhalmels, Ravens, or Goblins.
34-35, Camp near dock. Use Efts, Dhalmels or Rarabs vs. Efts, Dhalmels, Rarabs or Ravens.
36-37, Camp in tunnel at F-6. Use Efts vs. Ravens and Dhalmels.

First, let me say, I think this is an excellent guide -- I've seen a lot of new places so far as BST, and looking to finding even more leveling spots.

However, I think the Marine Dhalmels here are 34-37, not 33-37. I went here at 33 and died 4x in 1 hr (most death I've encountered as BST). I ended up dinging 34 at Qufim on leeches -- not super-fast exp, but at least it was positive.

I'm now back here at 34, and what a world of difference! I hit Chain #3 for the first time last night.

I would NOT recommend this to level 33 BST, but would to 34+.

Levels 66-68:

Uleguerand Range at (K-11), Polar Hares (65-68) -> Velociraptors (68-71) (mob listing in alla is wrong). Duo recommended. Convert every bunny you see to even and then go to town on the raptors. There's a nice camp next to the wall behind a rock where raptors never go, so you'll be safe from unexpected aggro.

That spot turns sour during FullMoon and NewMoon when parties show up to fight White and Black (respectively) Coneys, but otherwise is very sweet.

Heck, it is so unknown that from one day to the next our converted pets would still be there.

Lots of nice meleeing, chain #4 non-stop, 2-3K EXP per hour, no nasty status.

Anyone have a better alternative at 48 than Gustav or LOO? I've been at Gustav and the xp is really starting to suck at this lvl.Went to LOO and it looks even worse and the gobs are stacked on top of each other.Thought about going back to Gustav and trying the Gob pet trick , but how many can I actually plan on being able to get to at 48? Thanks for any help - Tj

Ok

Here is a little PDF I worked up. For some reason I allways want to click on the titles, and whatnot. So I copied, and pasted this into a PDF for everyones use. Feel free to distribute, and host this file wherever you like. I'll try to update the thing as this thread gets updated, but I can see it's out of date already XD.

Anyway Thanks go to Durgin. I just happily plopped his work into Word, and then wrote it out with Hyperlinks, and formatting.

Feel free to pull the doc down.
