Well, I can't play competitively, but it's mildly amusing to listen to my friends in a frenzy of ramification speculation. "It's a whole new game!" they say over again. For me, not so much, I wasn't fine-tuning my game play that much...or placing vision wards. I can say for sure that it'll look a bit different when I watch the next world championship live online, though. That was so fun. Sport watching I finally really got into.

My son plays LoL. He's pretty much an addict. I let him load it on my computer last time he was home, but have never dared to jump into the fray.

LoL and DOTA2 are fun games.

But both of their communities can get pretty damn awful. I hear both get better as you get further up the brackets, and you're only really playing with the better players. But honestly, that's a big investment.

It's kind of the eternal conflict with multiplayer, where you want people who are both decent at the game, and decent-enough human beings. The game is tightly competitive, so one bad player on your team really brings you down (feeding enemy kills for exp and gold, for instance).

But it's just as bad to have an ******* screaming about how much the newbie sucks. And once you're in the match, you're in it - there's no kicking them to wait for a new player.

You can ignore the chat, of course, but that's not really a good plan in a game that's absolutely a team vs. team system.

/shrug

I find the games really interesting, and I enjoy learning about them/watching them. But I don't have the stamina to actually break through the ******* barrier.

But there's a "report player" button after the matches, and I don't engage with cnuts in the matches, I just take a note of their name and press the button. My play is extremely variable, depending on how well my fingers are working at any given time, and sometimes I play appallingly badly. I've had some people say to other players to report me for "feeding". I just reply "I'm not trolling, I'm just disabled" and let it go at that. So far I've never had any consequences come down on me for being reported. Oh, you can also put other players on "ignore" and I'm pretty sure they won't match you up with each other again if you've done that.

I don't play Ranked games, so I feel entitled to play even though I'm on par with a 5 year old some days. I actually do quite well half the time on Heimerdinger (his turrets play for me!), Sona (no need to aim!) and Karthus (I can fight for 7 seconds after I'm dead, plus that ultimate revenge shot!)

There's now so much structured encouragement by the devs to encourage niceness, that people are mostly very positive even when our team loses. "gg" is said with no sarcasm in LoL. "wp" is often seen for "well played". For every ******** getting hysterical and yelling at others, there are 5-7players who say "it's fine, I've done that too/you'll get better/better luck next time".

That sounds way better. I haven't actually played any LoL in maybe a year. Played some DOTA2 more recently, and it was fine. But I'm not sure I prefer the systems in DOTA to LOL.

It's a shame, it's like I want a MOBA that's cobbled-together parts of the two of them. Smiley: lol

In general, I find the characters from LOL much more interesting. I also like that there's variety in the designs of the characters. Like you can play Garen and be entirely CD-based, or you can go for a mana hero, etc.

But I think I prefer the lack of meta game from DOTA2. I don't really love competitive mulitplayer systems like this where I start at an actual stat disadvantage when playing against people who will already have more skill and experience than me. It feels like overkill.

DOTA2's item system is more fun than LoL's.

I like the reactivity of LoL compared to DOTA (easier to last-hit).

Etc.

I uh.... don't think you've played much Dota2.

Unless you say meta-game to mean leveling up and getting more stuff as a player by playing more games that has an effect on what you can do in-game. Then yes, that is dumb. But when someone says meta-game in reference to mobas that's not usually what they're referring to Smiley: tongue.

Yeah, sorry, that is what I meant. I mean the runes and whatever - the stat bonuses. I like how DOTA starts everyone off at the same exact level, and the only thing that changes is your hero and your skill.

But the meta with team make-ups, hero counters, etc... That I find extremely interesting.

I sort of wish they'd put in a game mode that restricted the two factions again. That would be really interesting to watch. Makes me miss Vanilla WoW, with all the racial and Shaman vs. Paladin hate/rage/discussion. :P

It was in the original WC3 DotA, and was actually the default game mode. Nobody played, everyone prefered unrestricted All Pick mode.

I'm not surprised.

I still think it would make for a really interesting game mode, though. I'd be fine with them making a different map for it entirely, to encourage participation.
