Hey guys!

As someone who is looking forward to EQN immensly and also like the Zam forums in general I would like to ask if there are any plans to add EQN forums and if there are, do you have any idea of when it might come? Other than that hope everyone had a good holiday and has a great 2014!

Landmark is supposed to go into beta in a few months I think? Not sure about that though.

Yeah that is what I've heard too which is really cool, but personally what I am looking forward to the most is EQN. Wonder if we will get it this year even.

All I can say right now about EQN is that it cannot possibly be any worse than EQII. I hope they learned their lesson.

You'll be able to get a better idea of that in about 2 months. EQN: Landmark goes into Alpha on February 28th or sooner and if you pay $59.99 or $99.99 you get to participate and you get a bunch of goodies. Or you can pay $19.99 and wait a month for the closed beta that launches March 31st or sooner.

I always loved EQ2. The only reason I'm not playing it right now is I need a new computer. This one will barely show webpages anymore so MMOs are out of the question.

I wonder if the "Top Sekret project" the admin on Torhead is talking about (the reason they're behind on pretty much everything that needs fixing over there) is related to EQN...

I guess it depends on what it was you didn't like about it. I feel like they are going to make a good game and above all I am just happy to see someone try and have a new take on the genre but with some of the older games/sandbox ideas mixed in instead of the themepark. I think it is something that has been missing ever since developers saw and wanted to emulate the success of WoW. At least it feels like this will push the genre forward a little while at the same time giving people some different options.

Probably because all the games doing new things with the genre disappear into obscurity and niche status rapidly, if not flat out shutting down. Regardless of what they say, people don't want new.

I understand what you mean and it is not that I don't understand why most developers have gone for the more standard themepark route and features, but I am still happy to see a AAA developer (especially one with a brand like EQ) go for something different this time. If nothing else it will broaden the market by giving people a new quality sandbox-ish MMORPG which is always nice.

Color me clueless, but what's a "theme park" game design? You mean the "level up and proceed to next area" thing?

Kind of. It means: Stand in line for the rides you want to ride. Ride your favorite over and over again. You have no control over the environment, however. You can only interact with the game as it is presented to you.

It's usually contracted with the sandbox design, which allows players to sculpt and build their environment. Minecraft and The Sims are sandboxes.

Most MMOs are built around the theme park model, with some sandbox elements incorporated (such as player housing.)

Like Catwho said, think queue for dungeon, run dungeon, repeat. Get tired of that? Queue for battleground, run (?) battleground, repeat. Get tired of that? Queue for raid, run raid, repeat. Get tired of that? Do it on an alt. Get tired of that?

Well then you obviously go to play games in the Darkmoon Faire for tickets. Smiley: nod

Landmark is looking pretty cool as a sort of minecraft & MMO hybrid, we'll see how that works out in alpha & beta in a couple months though.

Though I think it's fair to note that essentially every game that's promised something "new" has been 90% WoW with the final 10% as some revamped aspect of existing MMO structures.

TOR was pretty much just WoW, but with a revamped storytelling experience (but only slightly altered questing model). RIFT was WoW but you had a bunch more talent trees to play with, and some random events. GW2 is probably the biggest switch-up, imo, but it's a switch-up in the way you might eat red grapes after having only green for years. It's really awesome for a short while, but it doesn't take too long to realize you're still just eating grapes.

If the base model is still fun for you, then these changes could be what you were looking for. But "new," for all of them, has been a marketing term, not a design one.

What I'm hoping with EGN and Wildstar is that they represent a new approach to the actual ideas surrounding an MMO world that it lets these games actually develop into something "new."

Wildstar seems to have been seriously thinking about the experience of combat gameplay and the place of old staples (like debuffs). And the player-built quest hub concept sounds promising, as long as it's as free and open as it seems they're suggesting it is.

EQN's constantly-evolving world has me more excited. I like the idea of ensuring the environment IS the content.

I think that's Landmark and EQ Next itself is going to have more traditional MMO aspects as well or something.
