Just following up for a status on a few thingsFollow

"We would never make you guys pay for stuff that you used to get for free on OGaming." -Draknorr

Still waiting on advanced bestiary search, forum avatars, .sig image capabilities, IMG tags on the boards and forum searching. I'm not trying to start a row here or anything, I'm just honestly curious; are these things still in the works? Should we give up on getting them back? What's the status on enabling these features? If you need dev help, this community has some great, knowledgeable users who I'm sure would be willing to step up to the plate if that's what it takes. Any info is much appreciated.

Cheers.

God, no.

These aren't things available to any non-Admin user anyway so Alla isn't making anyone pay for them. They simply don't exist.

It'd still be nice to have those capabilities that we once had back. I understand that those two particular things aren't "premium" services, but they are fun and sometimes useful features that we once had and lost. The only reason I can think of for not being given back those features we once enjoyed is laziness in moderation of the boards.

It's a waste of bandwidth and slows down the forums for the benefit of people who think that linking goatse into a thread is still clever.

Especially for non-premium members who don't care how often they get banned.

So you agree that there is a lack of willingness to put forth the effort required to properly police boards that have those features enabled. The fear of a few problem users results in the handicapping of the responsible majority as opposed to proper moderation or stricter enforcement of policy. It's certainly not a logistical issue as much larger and higher traffic boards seem to pull it off with flying colors.

But let's not deflect from the original heart of the thread too terribly much. I'm still curious as to the status of all of those features, not necessarily just the IMG tags and .sig images.

advanced bestiary search - I have no current status on this one
forum avatars - Premium membership only feature, and was prior to the merger. Any communication where it was stated that we would be giving that capability out for free was in error, and for that we appologize.
.sig image capabilities - Eq2 generated Sig images are in the works for Premium members, similar to the Wowsig feature. There are currently no plans to offer any other type of image sig capability.
IMG tags on the boards - This will remain an admin only feature due to past abuses. Lazy moderators have nothing to do with it. Children view this site, and the last thing we need is someone spamming hardcore **** images in the forums again. With the avatar system we at least have direct control over the images that are displayed.
forum searching- Premium membership only feature, and was prior to the merger. Any communication where it was stated that we would be giving that capability out for free was again, in error, and for that we appologize.

I believe the intention behind Draknorr's statement was the data and general site features of the ogaming site were going to be incorporated, not the forum features.

No, I would agree though that it's a moderation-heavy feature with minimal practical use and a waste of admin resources that can be better spent elsewhere.

Unless that's what you meant. If I want to look at someone's photoshopped cat, I'll go to 4Chan.

Thanks for the update and the clarification, Kaolian.

Some of that does make me a little sad though. I can see and understand how Draknorr may have intended to mean just the database portion of the site. It's just that a lot of us were really looking forward to these enhancements. It may sound silly, but we've really been anticipating them. I mean, the database functionality is great for as often as it gets used I suppose, but for some of us...the forums /are/ the site.

Thanks again for following-up, Kaolian. It is appreciated.

Believe me, I understand where you are coming from perfectly. You don't get a post count this big without considering a forum "home"

The premium features pay my salery, so I can't really fault the way we have things set up, but I do see where you are coming from since you had those features and you no longer do. We went though something similar when Allakhazam's switched over from UBB to this system a few years back.

You can sort of search the forums without premium using google and specifying just this site.

It definitely makes sense. The bills have to be paid, the minions have to get paid. A site this size does not run itself. The effort and expense that goes into it's maintenance can be staggering at times. I guess it's just a tougher pill to swallow seeing as how we enjoyed those board features for a good long time and lost them with the move here. We had sort of, mistakenly it seems, gotten our hopes up that we'd some day be getting them back.

Thanks for being straight with us on this matter, Kaolian. Your candor is appreciated.

As to the whole EQ2sig feature.

It was stated more than a couple months ago that it was for all intents and purposes complete. However you were just waiting on the proper background/design work to be done by your graphics staff. WoWsig has recently seen a rather large upgrade. Including a number of new skins for the sigs themselves as well as customization.

What is the word on EQ2 sig, since they have in fact been waiting at least since November for an update.

I understand. I was told this exact same thing back in Dec/Nov when Echoes of Faydwer was released. It is now mid way through April.

Exactly how long does it take to get the images done?

Not overly concerned but at times it feels like you guys need to be hounded in order to get a project done, otherwise it sits in limbo for way too long.

Yea, my comment was related directly to the EQ2 site, not the forums. I've looked into getting these features opened up on the EQ2 forums but it's all-or-nothing.

I apologize for not being more clear. We're constantly improving all of our sites including EQ2... a lot of the things are smaller and you might not notice them but there are a few big changes and enhancements coming in the future. One is advanced bestiary search.

Forum Avatars are a premium feature and that can't be changed, ditto with forum search. Completely customized signatures will not be happening anytime in the forseeable future, but we should have some sigs very similar to our WoW site down the road. Image tags will likely never happen for the reasons Kao stated.

Sorry Stugein, hopefully that cleared some stuff up.

I appreciate you coming out to speak on this issue, Drak. You back up your words and that's very strong. And I now have a better understanding of the spirit with which your original post was made.

I get that there are certain things that, here at AllaK's, have always been part of a higher tier, premium service. It could be viewed that suddenly giving some of these conveniences or fun enhancements away may be seen as almost...devalueing that service. I understand this. Revamping a feature set that has driven the perceived value of premium for so long isn't something to be taken lightly and as such I appreciate that it was even given contemplation. It's not even an uncommon revenue generating model on commercial message forums.

While there are many reasons to be wary of changes to the service tier and feature sets thereof, there are just as many reasons to embrace such changes. Points can be made on both sides of the table and I'm sure, given enough time, pressure and consideration, that one day a reasonable solution can be reached that is to the benefit and enjoyment of all of your loyal legacy and "adopted" users. There are surely reasonable and acceptable solutions to conerns of increased risk and need for moderation, as many commerical forum services have faced in the past (SA, SOE, IGN, etc.) and I look forward to seeing what you, as the caretakers of the site, come up with going forward.

Thank you for your time, and your consideration.

Cheers.

I do have to say I miss large tags, as they were useful for writing guides and organising information. Was the abuse that great, it can't be any worse than cruise control for cool rirong?

As far as the [lg] tags (and massive capslock spam, for that matter)...

Dana, is there any way you could limit both of these to no more than 40 characters at a time and no more than 5% of the total post? It'd get the "Smiley: cry I want my [lg] tags back" people to (hopefully) shut up as they have them back, it'd stop the people who do whole posts in [lg], and it'd also solve the whole "I WILL TYPE MY WHOLE POST IN CAPS BECAUSE IT ADDS SO MUCH VALUE TO THE FORUMS" idiocy in the OOTButthurt Cathedral.

(As far as *what* happens if the limits are exceeded... I propose filtering out all [lg] tags from the post, putting it all in lowercase, and then enclosing the whole post in [sm][/sm]. Smiley: laugh)
