New swear filter.Follow

The word "blood-y" apparently got hit with the filter.

Blood Spattered Mark Log is an item in FFXIV. We've been calling them Blood-y Logs because that's way too much to type out.

I mean, I get that bloody is a swear word in the UK, but come on.

And add "damn" as a word that is apparently over google's line. Or over the line of the retarded filtering system we have here now anyway.

I think the censor for "fitting" takes the cake though.

So I'm guessing we're not getting an answer on why the most ridiculous words are filtered?

If Google found out that we were discussing a nail with an inclined plane wrapping around it, commonly used to join two objects by twisting it through them, they'd take away all the Zam Dollars!

They won't because it's stupid and unjustified and they know it's stupid and unjustified but someone at The Top decided that the best way to handle this was to treat us all like pre-schoolers and slap some idiotic blanket list down that no other Adsense using forum on earth seems to require.

What's to answer about that? "Well, we're too lazy to try and do it intelligently or treat our users like adults so screw you guys"?

The list was generated from what Google AdSense considers to be their actionable account ban words. It's pretty much a direct copy and paste from that. This has zero to do whatsoever with treating our users like adults, it is 100% a preventative measure to ensure that we do not lose google AdSense advertising money, which pays for a significant portion of the forum system server and bandwidth amongst other things. If that funding goes away again (and them pulling it once was what kicked this whole thing off) and did not come back, there would not be a forum system, As annoying as it is, there is a reason those words were included, Until we have an alternative source of funding for the site, or Google AdSense changes their rules, we are really in a difficult position. Are there absolutely stupid words on the list? certainly. Is it annoying? certainly. Do we care that we are annoying our users over this? Yes. But not having any forum at all would be more annoying to me personally.

Quoted for truth.

Again, there's a bajillion forums that manage to NOT ban the word "hell" and still keep their Google dollars. I know, it's amazing and they must be using dark magic from India or something to do it but maybe whoever sits behind the big oak desk at Zam HQ can pick up the phone and call one of the numbers spammed across the forums and see how it's done.

Except that plenty of words in there just do not make sense. At all.
Censoring f*ck, w*nker and sh*t? Sure, makes sense and nobody complains about that. Censoring damn, hell, sexy, screw? That makes no sense at all unless Google is secretly a southern baptist church and it's making the forum a royal pain in the ass to use.

edit: of course ass is censored too and because of the way the filter works you now have to break the filter to be able to talk about Assassin's Creed.

The biggest thing for me is how weird the filter is at actually filtering.

It's definitely very poorly written. I'd be ashamed if it was my code put to the public like this.

I'd like to hope they'd fix it. But part of me doubts it.

The list of words chosen is more or less a whatever. Out of your hands and whatnot. I can deal with that. It's the technical aspects of the filter that are more of an issue. Breaking the filter with a period. Words like "Fitting.", which I can't find on any online list of words adsense banning somehow getting caught up in the filter(too close to the word you get by replacing the first 't' with an 's'?).

On a related note, and this may have already been linked and I just missed it, but is there any way we could check out the list of banned words? A link to an official list, perhaps? I can't find anything official, just a few sites that claim to have cracked the code.

Edit: Okay, looking around Google's adsense policies, it's kinda funny, but the spammers lately could potentially get adsense pulled if I'm reading this right.

It just means that the ZAM admins need to go through and clean out the spammers every few hours. Google doesn't want to pay for ads on a forum where only spammers are posting.

The way adsense works is there is a modified google sears subroutine that crawls the designated target ad site looking for text. If that text matches their database of flagged terms, one section of which includes spammer content harvested from other databases, the automatic system flags that site as being not in compliance for that day, with a percentage of noncompliance and a severity rating. Over time, if a sight accumulates too many, or too severe marks against it, they pull your advertising, send you a letter saying what they objected to, and give you a chance to fix it and appeal the decision. In general they restore ad service after that in about 10% of the cases that appeal. That process happened to us once already.

Spam content, to be flagged, would need to exist during the time period when google is crawling the site. They usually crawl it during buisiness hours because they know people don't remove spam from websites at 2am usually, and usually during the day we're pretty good about at least nuking the spam so it wouldn't be visible to a non admin account. That is a potential concern, and we probably have a few spam marks against us in the system, but even with all the recent spammer disruption we were probably ok overall on that one count.

Any news from the coders about the inconsistencies and glitches in the filter? Like the filter removing symbols immediately before and following certain words. If I were to start a quote with the word ****, it would look like this:

*********** this[/quote]

It's also weird about how it decided to filter things. It only filters every other word.

Damn it all to hell. Hell it all to damn.

It also has no problem with other version of words. I can say things like hells and damned and the filter doesn't seem to care.

I think the list for the filter must have been imported from Germany...

Edit:
No, not a Godwin's thing. Just that Germany has crazy filters on all their game releases.

Green blood... the reason why I never bought a video game while in Germany, despite the games being much cheaper than back home.

No official word yet on the filter being way over kill (Like, Nick Jr. levels of censorship or something) and in general broken?

Butt Butt
Hell Hell
***** *****
Fitting Fitting

Even non vulgar terminology
Gay Gay
Lesbian Lesbian
****** ******
***** *****

Twice in a row breaks the filter
Punctuation is consumed with the filtered word. It even consumes markup coding and tags for quotes, ruining post formatting.
Every word is replaced with the same **** which ruins posts when random words, used in a legitimate way, are filtered out. Talking about Hell difficulty in Diablo III, or gbaji mentioning a cigarette butt in a post.

I can't believe they censor the three-letter word for homosexual. I get why, but come on... isn't that discrimination?

Worst part is, the list is only going to get longer. Adsense has effectively cornered the market. Users of Adsense can't afford to not use it, and this makes Adsense more attractive to new clients who bring even more restrictions. It's a perpetually expanding spiral of horse manure.

Add nazi to the list of pointless words that are filtered, because WW2 discussion is evil.
