Emerald vs Topaz CarbuncleFollow

#1 Aug 27 2013 at 6:51 PM Rating: Good
Am I understanding correctly that Emerald is more a DD-style pet whereas the Topaz Carbuncle appears to be more of a tank?

Yes. Emerald does considerably more damage than Topaz. Topaz generates ridiculous amounts of enmity and is a lot more durable.

Yup - Emerald = caster DPS, Topaz = tank.

Your job path determines how this changes. SCH replaces (I believe) them with 2 fairies - a healer (with support) & a support (with heals). SMN has Garuda (replaces Emerald), Titan (replaces Topaz) and Ifrit (melee DPS).

I'm definitely taking the SMN path, though I hope over the years they will come up with more summons than those three. It's a shame that you loose Carbuncle, too. I'm rather fond of him.

Contrary to what was reported earlier, you can actually summon Carby as a Summoner. I just tested this tonight.

I'm sure they will - the Sylphs worship Ramuh, and the fishbreath (sorry, Sahagin) get their jollies from Leviathan. No word on Shiva yet, but when you see the ice surrounds of Ishgard, it's not a huge stretch to see a tribe of her's there later on. At this stage, they are seemingly trying to differentiate in terms of roles, as the XI summons had none, in terms of sustained presence. Short of a healer & support/buffer (which is the SCH area), not sure what else they can do. Removing of elemental resistances (whilst I understand their reasoning) kinda shoots the differentiation along this aspect in the foot. Maybe Leviathan can be a support/buffer (though weaker than the SCH fairy), and Ramuh a debuffer - Paralysis/Stun, DoTs, stat-down effects etc.

Just witnessed this first hand in Sastasha (my first dungeon) as the healer (boy this reminds me of XI) with an ARC PUG LNC. Topaz Carby tanked some of the fights well including the Sahagin endboss. We wiped the first time once the adds came around. 2nd attempt we decided to kill the adds as they came up. That strategy worked because tcarb (sounds like such a 'bro' name for carby lol) tanked the sahagin while everyone else destroyed the adds. I felt righteous. :P

Agreed. I ran all three of those duties with Carby tanking. You'd be surprised how many people are like, "You SURE you can tank them AND heal at the same time? I call bs..." only to be silenced moments later.

Or the occasional tank that was offended that he couldn't hold hate.

You can summon Carby as a summoner, but as you level the Topaz becomes the Titan Egi, and the Emerald becomes the Garuda Egi.

Correct, as a summoner, "Summon I" becomes Garuda and "Summon II" becomes Titan. But if you were to unequip your job stone they are still Emerald/Topaz carby.
