Does Brad McQuaid mean anything to you Everquest fans? He's apparently got a kickstarter fundraiser happening for a new game 'Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen.' He wants $800,000 by the 23rd of February for it to get a green light. Thought some of you might be interested.

I could live a happy life without having to hear about everyone and their mother's call for money for every little thing they think up. "Give me $20k and I'll start knitting scarves for gerbils professionally!"

I thought for asking for money too, but I don't have any kind of notable skill that could be exploited.

Yeah it means "guy who stole credit and ruined the game." Who wouldn't give him money for Vanguard 2. I mean the first one worked out so swimmingly.

Brad McQuaid had access to SOE's pocket for Vanguard and screwed it up royally. Which is too bad, cuz Vanguard was a good game.

I can't imagine giving him money in hopes of what?

A better MMO? Hah.

For how long the Kickstarter has been running and where they are at, it looks to be a moot point. He's not getting $800k by the deadline.

Wow, you don't understand how big money Kickstarter projects work. Of course he will, he's not going to turn down $400k in free money by not arranging another $400k in "donations" before the deadline.

Very likely. My interest in the history of big money Kickstarters is nil.

Failed with only 57% of its goal.

Well, that just breaks my heart. If only there were other MMORPGs out there.

Reading that I'm not exactly surprised. I get the point they're trying to make but I don't think going back to EQ days is the right way to make a challenging MMO.

Honestly I am not surprised it failed. I looked at the concept, and realized it pretty much brought nothing new to the MMO table. It was.... generic in so many ways.

At least the latest version of ************* MMO came with a Final Fantasy name brand on it.

There's probably still room for an original MMO franchise, but this idea was not it.

Precisely. There were things that made MMOs "challenging" years ago that won't fly these days. There was a time people put up with things, the negitives were overwhelmed by the novelty of the whole online gaming thing. Not that it wouldn't hurt to have some ideas back, but a lot of bad ones have been weeded out over the years. Doesn't hurt to keep it that way.

Kickstarter doesn't charge you until pledges hit the goal. No money changed hands in this instance.

The whole no quests, just grind to level thing is ridiculous at best. Yeah, kill X of Y quests are ******* lame but you know what, doing that same **** x100 without even getting a quest reward for it is much worse in every possible way.

Everquest had quests, they just weren't an effective way to level in of themselves. On the other hand, loot from mobs was better than in most MMORPGs. MMORPGs these days seem to be "Your main gear will all come from quests" whereas EQ's system had you hunting various named mobs for drops. I liked it better in some ways -- if anything it offered multiple places around the world for your level so you could mix it up. I've played games where it was "Level 15? You need to do this quest for your level 15 chest piece. Have fun at the same volcano as everyone else since this is the only real piece of level 15 gear worth getting and the only way to get it!"

See, I like the idea of hunting named mobs that roam certain areas (without a fixed path or spawnpoint) for special drops alongside dungeons, quests and crafting to get your gear while leveling. And you don't want any piece of gear to be mandatory any time before the top end of the end game where that's pretty much unavoidable anyway.

I don't, I still remember farming named mobs to get as a pet for my hunter. Ugh.
